Just under eight weeks. They ran the background check about three days after I submitted my application then promptly misplaced the application. Since I was told "45 days" I didn't start asking about it until my wife's came back approved, (she applied after me). That's when they found mine still at the police in a file where it wasn't supposed to be. It finally made it back to the commonwealths attorney on the 45th day and there it sat for another two weeks before being approved by the judge. It took numerous phone calls to get them to issue my de facto permit as required under VA law. They kept claiming they had never had one take over 45 days so they weren't sure how to handle it. I kept telling them the law tells you what to do you don't have to think about it. What should have been a two or three week process at best was totally derailed by someones lack of attention to the process. Still the folks I spoke with on every occasion were courteous and respectful. The problem was more in the process then the people.
