I carry this one, though mine is blue.
The wife carries the same knife.
The best part is that these are legal to carry in AZ.:)

I always have a knife on me everyday and I use it almost everyday. I also carry a small flashlight, phone, and multi-tool at all times.

I always have a folder or custom fixed blade about 3" at all times. My local agency has a no carry policy in the office buildings but it only addresses blades over 3.5" so we squeak by with shorter ones.

I started carrying a pocket knife everyday when I was a Cub Scout. I'm 62 now. I worked for the state for 37 years and carried a knife everyday. I don't understand how people get through the day without a knife.

I know, it's like it was at the office, "Let me go get a pair of scissors to cut this." What a waste of time to have to go run and fetch and then take it back.

10" office shears are a lot more lethal than my Sebenza, too.

^^ I agree... How do they do it? Im almost 50.. same scouts etc. I carry multiple knives all day everyday. Small single blade lockback, Victorinox swiss army (scouts) :) Be Prepared! A Tactical Folder (Defensive)and a Larger Utility type on my belt.

The Brands change from time to time because I switch them out, but the utility of each has a purpose and are used all the time.

And just the other day my son gets a new job, first day at work... They are not allowed to carry a knife on job site.... If they need one a super has to go retrieve one and return.....

He is an electrician..........:banghead:

I usually have like 3 knives on me. I'm what you would call a knife addict. I don't really think of them as weapons, but I hear that they are pretty good for that type of thing. Right now I'm carrying a Benchmade 42, a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 and a Case trapper. My carry gun is a Ruger SR9c.

Walmart sells a pretty sweet knife made by gerber. It's got sort of a skeleton case around the blade so you can see the blade while it sits closed.. anyone know what im talking about? I carry that around.

Does a Case Peanut without a primary count. Just make sure you keep it hidden deep in your pocket if going through NYC or you can get a ticket.

Knives that are legal to carry in NYC HAVE TO BE CARRIED COMPLETELY CONCEALED (don't even think of using a pocket clip) which is contrary to the laws in a lot of other States and Cities.

I just thought I would mention that.

There were a few people who got tickets for having tiny Swiss Army Knives dangling from their key chain.

Judges here like to rule pocket clips are the same as having the knife exposed.

I find my Case Peanut is up to almost any task that comes my way except of self defense.

In NYC technically if you tell a cop you would use your bic pen for defense you could face a weapons charge by virtue of intent.

Truthfully I do not consider my Peanut to be anything close to a defensive weapon it's just a very handy all aroung cutting tool to have.

A primary is somthing I don't carry though.

Hey guys, its been one of "those weeks" so let me just start by saying I'm a little cranky, but I'll do my level best to keep it civil.

First things first - Gym, you said that you read several articles about knife usage in the unfriendly and bloody sense... any chance you could post some links if they can be found online? I'd love to read them!

Second, are you asking "Should I carry a knife" or "What kind of knife can I carry that I will actually carry and not get in the way"?

There are a lot of small knives out there (SOG Micron is pretty small) and I manage to carry a pretty big folder, a CRKT M21 every day, so I think it won't be too hard to find a knife you can carry. It might take a while to find "Your knife," but you should be able to head down to the LGS and pick up a small folder, or use one of the ones laying around before you decide on the knife you'll carry for the rest of your life.

Gem, could you PM me the details of that knife stage? I'd love to try and get a stage like that at our next match

I'm wary of the idea of carrying any sort of knife that isn't obviously a tool. For one, if you ever had to use one in self-defense, you'd have to get close enough to be cut or hit with the weapon they have, and if you're not close enough, you might as well run away. That also doesn't account for the fact that they don't work very good at stopping threats. Knives generally make terrible defensive tools, with the limited exception of confined spaces like elevators.

I get what you're saying, but you're assuming that you get to choose how far away the other guy is going to be. I know everyone talks a great game about situational awareness, and I agree that its super important, but lets be honest, everyone screws up, everyone suffers from "Task Fixation" at some point, and since that distractedness is what the predators are looking for, that's when they will strike. Point being, if you can see the guy coming from 10 feet away, and you can avoid a confrontation, awesome, that's the best possible outcome. Everything else gets significantly worse after that.

Hypothetically, lets say I'm the bad guy here. While you're busy starring at whatever it is that isn't me, I'm going to get into a more dominant position. Maybe that's just right infront of you so you can't ignore my panhandling. Maybe I'm doing such a good job with blending in and target selection that when you're distracted by the nice motorcycle or a pretty girl, I'm already in a good position and close enough to make a move. So now I've grabbed onto your dominant arm and your collar and shoved you against a wall... I know we all practice drawing our firearm with both hands, but good luck doing that without figuring out what your doing. On the plus side, I'll be letting go of your collar... but that's only so I can grab your gun, and while your using both hands to wrestle with me over it, my free hand is going to be either punching you in the face, or hitting you with something hard (I'm thinking a beer bottle or a rock would do nicely). So then I take your gun, figure that's a pretty good score, and run away, leaving you there bleeding, and when you go home and look on your online forums you see these guys talking about how a cheap folding knife can be carried on your weak side, and you think "hey, that could have come in handy."

I had about 3 more of those scenarios in my head (The one where I use my buddy who just needs to barrow jumper cables as a pre-planned distraction was a really fun one) but I've got to run, so I'll restrain myself... That last part of the scenario wasn't really the main point: I don't think that drawing a knife was exactly the best thing to do in that situation, and while it does a good job of illustrating that maybe carrying a defensive tool on your offhand side isn't a bad idea, that was only a secondary objective. The real point is, yes, its great to solve a problem at a distance, that's why we have things like the 30-06 and predator drone, but neither of those do you much good if the other guy chooses to close the distance, and is now touching you. I don't mean "his outstretched fingers brushing against your arm" touching you. I'm talking "one arm around your back, just head-butted your face, setting up to throw you on the ground" touching you!

Then again, what do I know....

I carry a Kershaw "Leek" it's thin and light and has a spring assisted and locking 3" blade. It's light enough to clip to my shorts when I jog. (most likely scenario would be to save my dog from an aggressive Pit Bull )
I got my wife a pink one!

FWIW I feel "nekid" when I am without a knife. One on my person when my feet hit the floor in the morning and stays that way all day. One of the main reasons I refuse to fly now. I feel that having a knife with me is at least as important as a firearm if not more so. YMMV:)

A thin folder that will fit into your watch pocket in your jeans (I wear them daily) that can be opened one handed is the ticket for me.

What an interesting thread.

I have been collecting knives since I was old enough to cut myself. I have a special storage container for the tactical knives, but the beautiful oldies stay in the old tool chest. My favorite is my grandfathers WW2 bayonet. Once in a while I find a good one at the pawn shop.

Photos please. :)

I have only been without a knife of some kind twice in the last 50 years.

Once when I entered the Army Basic Training reception center in 1964, and they took away my little 2.5" Case two-blade slip joint and issued me a M-14 and bayonet..

And again 4-5 years ago when I got called to jury duty and got 'made' by the cop running the courthouse metal detector.

I had to make a two block hike back to the truck to leave a little SAK and a 4" Benchmade AFCK in the glove box, just to serve my civic duty!

He didn't get bothered by my leather belt & heavy brass belt buckle, stainless steel mechanical pin, or Streamlite Stylus Pro light though!!

CZ75B and a CRKT Ignitor
Started carrying a knife in 2010, haven't stopped.

Cant carry a gun in NY, no one has bothered be for a knife.
Cant carry a gun in MD, no one has bothered me for a knife.

DC? Looks odd with a 21yo carrying a walking cane, but it gets the job done.

Since I figured out in 2005 that I had more to worry about than distant (20' or better) threats, and since I had my first encounter with Southnarc (www.shivworks.com), I've carried knives clipped in both front pants pockets. The '0-3 Foot Gunfighting' introduction at the Snubby Summit was a real eye opener for me. And it was my first meeting with Paul Gomez as well, who was helping Craig (Southnarc) at this seminar.

If I have to explain to you that not all attacks come from stationary assailants at 21', I'm probably wasting my time. Genuine street thugs look for people who are not practicing situational awareness and who are not offering adequate clues to get themselves deselected as possible victims during the victim selection process. And sometimes, that might be any one of us.

Craig advocates carrying multiple weapons bilaterally (on both sides of the body) and at various levels - armpit, waist and ankle. That may seem extreme, but given his background in undercover buy/bust operations as a LEO, it's actually pretty realistic for the situation. I don't go that far, but I do carry two knives, a J frame and pepper spray in various places.

ETA - The Zimmerman situation (on your back, on the ground, with an assailant in a superior position - aka 'ground and pound') is pretty much a worst case scenario. Few people who haven't spent time on the mats with someone with superior grappling skills can really understand how bad it can get and how quickly it can get that way. Those are among the drills you work with, with Southnarc's training.

His preferred approach with a knife is the reverse edge methodology. A pikal type blade is often preferred for that. Ban Tang produces a number of fixed blades suitable for that - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1062687-Reverse-Edge-Line-Up. Since I'm in NC, I carry folders - I just started working with a Zero Tolerance Talon, which seems to be suited for these applications. It's an assisted opener, and might be of interest to you...

Mine came from http://www.knifecenter.com/item/ZT0...ed-35-inch-S30V-Black-Talon-Blade-G10-Handles

See http://www.donrearic.com/southerncomfort.html for more on the evolution of Southnarc's approach to reverse edge, and the evolution of the Talon that's in my pocket as well.

ETA2 - Spyderco makes a somewhat similar design - http://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-PKal-Folding-Plain-Knife/dp/B001OA231Y/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

My job is not to provide you with supporting documetation for a topic which obviouslly warrented some interest. I think you had a bad day.

The best part is that these are legal to carry in AZ.

And now AK, IN, TX, KS, MO (Knife Rights wins in this year and last). They're pushing for at least 37 states to have no switchblade or blade length restrictions and they're getting that done.
