How many magazines?

Wow, you must be super duper extra serious... I mean all those collectors and target shooters definitely aren't SERIOUS shooters, and their guns aren't SERIOUS either.

What a condescending load of crap.

I think your reading too much into this and over reacting...I don't think it was condescending either.

I think he used serious to mean for self defense/home defense/competition as opposed to for recreation/hobby/collection.

I have other more pressing financial concerns than stockpiling magazines though.

I think this is what decides for most of us. For example, I have 16 magazines for my Beretta 92 but only 3 each for my two Taurus Millennium Pros. I can find factory Beretta magazines for $18 each and surplus Airtronic magazines for $10 (when on sale) but the Taurus magazines are $35 each all the time, hence the difference in the number I own. Many of the magazines are just too expensive for me to justify buying a lot of spares.

But for the "serious" guns owned by "serious" shooters, you'll simply need more.

The problem I have with the way you phrase your point. Words and quotation marks have definite meanings and, unfortunately, implications as well. I believe the more magazines the better, for any type of gun. I am just opposed to the idea that the people engaged in HD/SD training or IPSC type competitions are the only "serious" shooters.

I admit I was outta line in my remark. My apologies, its been a bad day.

Two. I like to take a break at the range rather than just throw lead downrange, so I like loading magazines as a way to chill. You do have an Uplula, don't you?

4 or 5 for just about all of my handguns. Including revolvers I also keep 4 or 5 speed loaders or speed strips for each.

I like 7 mags per gun...I don't like to waste time reloading and adding fatigue to my hands during range sessions.

I shoot IDPA and like to have six double column magazines. Single stack, I want 10 8-round .45s or 10-round 9mms, plus a Barney Mag and a clearly marked magazine for downloaded starts. I load magazines the night before a match so I can check out the stages and talk to people instead of hastily handling ammo at the range.

Carry guns need 3, one to load, one to reload, and a spare.

Target guns need 2, one to shoot and a spare.

It depends how serious YOU are and how serious the gun is.

It seems whenever someone asks this question, some responders automatically think that the question is "how many mags should I carry on my body," (Post #3) which is a totally different question.

For "fun" or "collector" guns, 2 will get you by.

For serious guns, think in multiples of 6, having two complete sets of 6 gives you 12 per gun.

For high capacity guns, 18 is good, 24 is better. Why? Because who knows how long we'll be able to buy the hi-cap mags?

Magazines for serious guns owned by serious shooters are like $100 bills........you really can't have too many.

I agree with this. the question is pretty open. I own 12 magazines for my 1911 so I can do IDPA.

For carry 3, but I Dont carry three (one in gun) with me. Just good to have a spare.

Three or four.
Since all my handguns can be carry guns, I have a minimum of three. One in the weapon, two on my side.
A few have four mags. One in the gun, two on my side, one extra with FMJ for hiking in bear country.

Most of the time when practicing, I first fire all my carry ammo, then reload as many times as I feel like firing that day at the range or down the street in the open. There are other times, those wake up in the AM and decide to go shoot some rounds, that I do not shoot the JHPs; I unload them, then reload after shooting the FMJs. However, at least once a month, the JHPs are used for practice.

I always keep one handgun loaded with JHPs for carry home from the range.

For my two defensive guns (Bersa Thunder, and Kel-Tec PF-9), two each. For my two "fun guns", which are both .22LR guns, one each, though I wouldn't mind having two for each of them as well.
I used to think I was "serious" about guns, but I guess I'm not, since I carry only one spare mag with my CCF. At home, that same spare mag is still on me, though a second gun is almost never far.

For my 1911s, I've got 72 Range/Beater Duty magazines, and probably about 60 that are slated for carry or stored spares.

The reason I have so many range magazines is because I like to load up the night before, so I can spend the range time shooting instead of half of it dedicated to reloading magazines.

For my one Browning High Power...only three magazines. I rarely shoot it, and three seems to be adequate under those circumstances.

As has been voiced at least once herein, the '94 AWB and the ridiculous magazine capacity limitations that accompanied that piece of legislative rubbish has had a significant effect on me, and no doubt, many others.

At a minimum, I have a dozen magazines per handgun (2 in/with the gun with two sets of "5" as "replacement" and "back-up" sets). Rifles (that take magazines) are set up the same way.

This is probably a bit excessive, but having been "sensitized" to the availability of "high capacity" magazines as I have, courtesy of the aforementioned AWB, I would rather have 'em when I can get 'em as opposed to paying a 'premium' for the scarce commodity should they meet such a fate again.

I am not greedy. Just paranoid. :D

For collection pieces one or two will be enough. For shooters a minumum of four, and preferably six.

+1
And I'd like to add for my range favorites I want enough mags so I can hit the firing line with 100-200 rounds loaded up so I can spent my time shooting instead of stuffing magazines. Seeing how its 95+ degrees with 90+ humidity outside, I much prefer stuffing the mags in air conditioned comfort rather than standing there in the heat.

This means for my favorite .22 pistols I have as much or more $$$ in the mags as I do in the gun :(

I have enough 1911 mags to load 500 rounds, but these are pretty cheap as magazines go and a properly set up 1911 is not particular about mags as along as the springs are strong enough for the controlled feed to work.

All the magazines you could use and can afford would be ideal, really, but I'd say 4-5 at minimum for a defensive pistol--2 for range use (in case one fails and to practice mag reloads) and 2-3 for defensive use. Range-only pistols can get by with only 2, although obviously being able to pre-load a bunch of them ahead of time has its advantages.

Anyone ever buy a range bag with 7 magazine pockets, then decide they need 7 magazines to fill those pockets?

Not that I have. >_>
