How much AMMO do you have?

This kinda sums it up....

In December of 1998, a Marine officer relayed a story told by Lt.Gen. Tommy R. Franks, who commands the 3rd U.S. Army and U.S. Army Forces Central Command:

"After all the briefs, the general ended the meeting relating a visit he made with the American ambassador to (Battalion Landing Team) 2/4 today, just hours after the accident," the officer wrote. "The general reminded the assembled officers that Marines live in holes and don't have a house to live in like 'heavy forces.' No tank or lots of tents to sleep in. They carry their 'house' on their back and they live in fighting holes. Although the Marines had just lost a buddy (in a humvee accident), their spirit was 'uplifting'.

"He said a question by the ambassador to a Marine private drove the point home. The ambassador asked a private sitting in his hole, 'how is it here in the hole?' The private answered, 'Kind of like the beach without water.' The ambassador then asked, 'If you could get something, what would you like to have?'

"Lt. Gen. Franks related most of us would have answered, 'a hot meal', 'a cot', 'a shower,' but this Marine private said, 'I could use some more ammunition.'

Marine private said, 'I could use some more ammunition.'

Right on.

My dad was a Marine, and when I was little I asked my dad "whats the difference between Marines and Army soldiers?" My dad replied "We're just about the same, except those spoiled soldiers have tents, toilettes, and TV...Marines have dirt holes, tin cans, and porno magazines"

I've usually got anywhere from several thousand to 10,000 of all different calibers, rifle, pistol and shotshells. Right now I'm probably on the high end, I got a progressive reloader a few months ago and I've gone a little crazy reloading, just last week alone I loaded a couple of thousand. We won't even discuss the weeks before that.

Oh, and I got a lead pot and 3 molds and have turned out about 7000 lead bullets from a couple of buckets full of wheel weights.

Sure is a shame I lost all my guns in that tragic boating accident! :D

It all depends what the purpose is. Some people do massive stockpiling because they are paranoid tinfoil hat wearing people who think ammo will be banned tomorrow. Either that, or they think that 75,000 rds is going to be necessary for SHTF use. LOL! A tactical wheelbarrow won't be enough, need a tactical forklift and a tactical 18-wheeler for that.

Others pile up tons of ammo because they really do shoot a few thousand rounds of ammo a month. They do this to keep fluctuations in the market (like some of the shortages we've seen the last year) from having an effect on their shooting habits and routines. Others like to secure ammo at a certain price. To be able to weather periods of high-prices till the prices come down again.

If you're really into massive volume shooting, then amounts over 10,000 rnds and upwards is not insane. If you're not a volume shooter, then having a case or two is plenty. Gives you enough to practice with for a while and gives you plenty for a "load-out" if the S ever does HTF. For anyone that's a newbie, don't get sucked into this belief that you need 45,000rds of ammo on hand at all times. That's nonsense.

boy thats a tuffy, I know at the old house under the guest bed there was about 10 to 15K rnds in metal ammo cans, when my Liberal Inlaws would come to visit they seemed to sleep just fine :D

Hmm. Going off memory here:

.22LR: About 4,000 rounds.
.223: Just shy of a thousand rounds.
.45 ACP: Exactly 570 rounds (just bought my first .45 ACP pistol, 500 rounds of CCI Blazer, 20 rounds of Gold Dots, and 50 rounds of Federal HSTs)
9mm: Probably about 600 rounds. I sold my 9mm pistols, but am looking at getting a MAC subgun, so I'll hang onto them.
12ga: Probably about 80 rounds, mostly birdshot for plinking. The buckshot I do have is in the shotgun under the bed.
.30-06: About 200 rounds on M1 clips.
.308: About 150 rounds on 1919 links, for the 1919 obviously. I've got about 3000 links and a linker, but not enough ammo!
7.62x39mm: About a thousand rounds, but I sold my SKS. I should get an AK one of these days...

What I'd really like to do is deplete all my ammo supplies to nothing over one or two days of Shooty Goodness. In preparation for this, I would have saved up a bunch of money. Upon being completely tapped out (with the exception of two magazines of defensive .45 ACP and a few rounds of 00 buck), I would then order about 15k-20k rounds of non-.22LR ammo from Midway or some other vendor. Then sort everything into labeled ammo cans, rather than the unlabeled mess I have now.

One of these days...:banghead:

"Does ammo have a shelf life? If so what is it? does anyone rotate there inventory."

Well, I am going to finish up the last of the about 1000 rounds of Korean War .30-'06 I had (corrosive, so in my 03s only). So, I would say that 50 years is easily doable.
As far as how much, a hundred or so less .308 and .30-'06 after this afternoon. And likely a couple of hundred more .45 after I get finished re-loading this weekend. No time to count it, barely enough time to shoot it and make it.

heypete...notice Re: 308 linked ammo

This past year I purchased a can of 200 rounds of 7.62 linked ammo. When I got home, I checked for megnetic responce...crap! They are ALL steel jacketed bullets with lead core. Those can destroy your barrel pretty fast, much more so than copper. Check yours. I say this because you noted they were linked. Maybe worried over nothing, but I take extreme care of my barrels. I have kept it, but I do not keep it loaded. It is there for emergency only.

Yea. 45,000 rounds is probably more then you will need. 20,000 rounds will probably cover it. Although, you never know, better make it 30,000, just in case.

enough to hold them off
define enough.
define them.
:)

I have 22,000 rounds of 7.62 X 51. Visitors are quite shocked when they see it.

Which means... I'm getting low. Better run down to Aim Surplus today. ;)

I also have quite a bit of .50 BMG and .223.

The amount of ammunition in reserve is much like accumulating gold..... more that better!! You just never know when you are going to need it.

I believe I would keep those 22,000 rounds of 7.62 tucked away when visitors are present. The most any visitor would see in my house is a box of shells lying around. That is until you let them tour the armory. :)

Let's just say that I purchased a 2nd full size safe to hold my ammo.
I buy in bulk due to the fact that I shoot....a lot. I have 10 different calibers that I shoot between my pistols and rifles. My ammo bill runs right at $400 a month.

Not as much as I would like, But I always have enough for home defense. I will only have a problem if Zombies attack, or in a Red Dawn situation.

after katrina, I decided that when i return from iraq, i will begin serious stockpiling.

I've got about 4 or 5 cases for my mosins. A few boxes for my SKS and my shotguns, and pistols.

I'd like to stockpile quite a bit, just in case. you never know what's gonna happen

I was talking about this with some fellow gunnies just the other day.

Me I have "a lot".

But I'm a piker compared to one of the guys I was talking with. He has enough 223 ammo to keep a 600rpm machinegun running for over an hour and a half solid!!:what:

Good thing he's a friend. :D

I'm glad I bought 3 cases of Wolf Match Target .22 LR back when a brick was $15 to $18. Now a brick is running $35 and up at the gun show.

I also bought some Match Extra, 28 ga. and a bunch of 2.75" and 3" Hevi-Shot duck and goose loads before ammo prices went up.

I suppose I could have invested the money in a 5% CD and paid taxes on the earnings.

"Enough to get asked why and who are you going to invade"

Yeah, the Fed-Ex driver asked me about the same thing after he dropped off two Garands and 2000 rounds of Lake City .30-'06 ammo from CMP in the space of about two weeks.
He looked at me and said, "Is there something you know that I need to know?"
He's a good guy who only lives a couple houses away from me.

Mmmm, 1000 rounds for $230 delivered. Maybe I need to log on the CMP again.:D

I'm trying to build up my stock of ammo. Problem is I spend too much time at the range shooting it up. I have a question though. Where do you guys store your ammo.

Did order my first tin of 5.45x39. I also need a case of .45, 300 win mag, as much 7.35 Italian Carcano I can get, .357,.44mag,45LC,.410,12ga and the ever present 22LR. Oh some 8mm mauser and .303.

So I figure a case of each in storage and purchase ammo for my weekly needs from the gun shop.

If you know how much you have, you aren't really trying hard enough.

Century regularly has 8mm for 5 cents a round. Shipping is $12.50 regardless of qty, or free if you buy $500 worth. No need to stop at the gun store weekly, unless you want to.
