Seriously. While zombies are unlikely, the threat of alien invasion HAS been professionally discussed by the government and various think tanks.
If it ever happens, we do have plans.
If we're successful, you can thank the SF community, most of whom own guns (even card-carrying Commies like Eric Flint and Steven Brust), for making the issue believable to the masses, and enough PhDs aware of the subject to hold fora and do research.
Sorry, not to get off of the subject, but while all of these are good points, if aliens did invade us, we would have about zero chance to defeat them. C'mon, think of the technology they'd have against us.
How much ammo do you keep stocked up?
(technologicly, we do have the technological ability to build a sublight starship, but the cost would exceed the combined global GDP for a decade)
I do not believe what classic survivalist believe I want to preserve local infrastructure and governance as much as possible. "Community survivalist" would be a acceptable to me.
Most localities (or states) have limits on how much gas you can store in your garage in cans. Many people might well be shocked to learn they are in violation of the gas laws.
