Without looking it up (honor system here, boss) answer the following questions.

1. Do you know the difference between a "magazine" and a "clip?"

2. Do you know which way to move a FRONT sight to get the group to go left?

3. Do you know WHY 30-30 factory cartridges aren't pointy?

4. How is an extractor different from an ejector?

5. Can you tell which way a cylinder turns on a revolver WITHOUT trying it?

6. Which is generally stronger, a rear locking or front locking bolt?

7. Why are hollow points better for long range TARGET shooting than solids?

8. Generally, should a short bullet have a faster or slower rifling twist than a longer bullet in a given bore diameter.

9. What does a revolver do if it is "OUT OF TIME?"

10. What is a "prawl?"

Place score in poll and we'll check our expertise.

:scrutiny:

Well, I'm assuming that a "prawl" is the same as a Pawl, so I scored 10. If I'm wrong about this, I'm certain some one will tell me!

I got 9 right but I wouldnt consider myself a gunshop hustler....yet. I've been learning from the best at TFL and THR for 4 years now. Though I cant even buy guns yet!

1. Do you know the difference between a "magazine" and a "clip?"
Yes.
2. Do you know which way to move a FRONT sight to get the group to go left?
Huh? All my FRONT sights are fixed re windage.
3. Do you know WHY 30-30 factory cartridges aren't pointy?
Yes. Safety in tubular "magazines".
4. How is an extractor different from an ejector?
Yes. One jerks, the other tosses.
5. Can you tell which way a cylinder turns on a revolver WITHOUT trying it?
No. But the one I know of rotates left.
6. Which is generally stronger, a rear locking or front locking bolt?
???
7. Why are hollow points better for long range TARGET shooting than solids?
??? (Off the top of my pointy head - they aren't)
8. Generally, should a short bullet have a faster or slower rifling twist than a longer bullet in a given bore diameter.
??? (SWAG - slower)
9. What does a revolver do if it is "OUT OF TIME?"
Goes to smith.
10. What is a "prawl?"
??? ( )

Now you know why I voted "0".
Teach! I'm ready to learn more.:)

Dang... I'm only Realy Good.... :D

Heck -- I could have told you that I was Real Good (and Very Modest) anyway!

Didn't count but .. think only one I got wrong. I still tho only voted for the ''mid-range'' .. certainly no Hustler!!

Despite having gained a fount of knowledge over the years .. and always adding from THR .. I realize more and more how little I sometimes feel I do know.

My weakest point is firearms history .. fortunately we have some excellent minds on THR to help that. Learning is a continuous process .. and sometimes the more you learn .... the more you realize you still NEED to learn!:p

Well, I was going to vote myself as "above average " until I actually read the questions.

Now I'm officially "real good" and maybe "gun shop hustler."

Color me surprised.

:what:

Probably got just near half of them. (One question, there's nothing about revolver design/engineering that dictates that the cylinder will rotate in one direction only, is there? In other words, can't the design be such that one could rotate left or right?)

But tests like these (simple answers with no dicussion or explanation) were always a bit of a stupid idea to me simply because any fool can memorize and regurgitate the information upon demand assuming any base ability to remember things. Far better is to know where to go to get the answers!!!!!!! :D I always said it was silly to make me remember some off-the-wall equation I would never really use. Like 10 years down the road I'm really going to try an recall what I learned in college when I have a question when I can just go look it up.

That all being said, I only need to know enough to get me through my own collection. And that is satisfactory at the moment.

More importantly, even my limited knowledge base is light years ahead of the average American and believe you me, that goes a helluva long way to educating the masses. I remember a point during a field lab in college where we found a spent shotgun shell. I had a good 20 minute discussion on the ride back to campus with a gal who didn't know a darn thing about firearms explaining what how a shotgun shell was different than a handgun or rifle cartridge (and how a cartridge was different than just a bullet), how the primer system worked, etc., etc., etc.,. Even my small amount of knowledge seemed impressive to her.

Moral: there's always somebody out there who knows more than you do so who the cares how much you know.

Gave myself a 5, but I don't think I'm above average, not amongst this crowd for sure.

Looking forward to explanations for 6,7,8 and 10

You have that right ARperson - today I found out how much I didn't know about something I thought I knew reasonably well.
