The latest news, 10-08-13 is that some of the participants were off duty NYPD. In at least one case an undercover police officer is suspected of taking part in the attack on the car. Apparently the NYPD had video of this talking place.

I'm looking for a link that actually says that an undercover police officer is suspected of actually taking part in the attack. Can't find one right now. Do you have a source you could post?

From the New York Times of Oct. 8th 2013

An undercover New York City police detective who was among a group of motorcyclists chasing a sport utility vehicle on the West Side of Manhattan last month was arrested on Tuesday evening for his role in the episode, in which the vehicle was damaged and the driver was beaten, the police said.

The detective, Wojciech Braszczok, 32, was off duty at the time, and had told his lawyer that, while he had followed the motorcyclists from the Henry Hudson Parkway onto a Washington Heights street, he left once some of the riders began attacking the vehicle.

But investigators found his story suspicious from the beginning — in part because the detective took several days to come forward after the violent and chaotic episode on Sept. 29, said a law enforcement official, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity because the detective had not yet been arraigned...

Detective Braszczok’s story was contradicted, the official said, by video taken at the scene, as well as by witness statements. In the video, the detective can be seen pounding his fists on the back of the vehicle.

Another police detective has said that he, too, was among the motorcyclists on the highway during the ride, according to Philip E. Karasyk, a lawyer for the Detectives Endowment Association. That detective was already on modified duty stemming from an unrelated domestic dispute.

Google other sources as well.

An additional source on the above and another take with video:

From the N.Y. Daily News

An undercover NYPD detective swapped his biker’s helmet for handcuffs Tuesday after a video captured his hands-on role in a motorcycle mob’s attack on a helpless dad.

Wojchiech Braszczok, 32, was charged with riot and criminal mischief for pounding on a stopped SUV as driver Alexian Lien cowered inside with his wife and their 2-year-old daughter.

Braszczok’s lies to police brass were exposed when damning taped evidence of his participation in the terrifying Sept. 29 chase and assault in Manhattan surfaced, according to sources.

The 10-year veteran cop — who sources confirmed had done undercover work in Occupy Wall Street posing as a protester — surrendered with his civilian lawyer and was taken to Manhattan Central Booking, a police source said. The suspect lost his union attorney after friction over his bogus story, sources said.

This report also points out that the officer was working previously undercover as a protestor during the Occupy Wall St. protests. There is a long history in the U.S. of undercover cops acting under orders as provocateurs at political protests but not so much at this type of event. Here he was off duty. Interesting though that another off duty cop was present. Both cops may have just been enjoying a day off and got caught up in the "fun".
