If you could only keep one gun

If I had to keep just one gun it'd be my Steyr Scout .308. It's the one I can count on to always do what I want it to do. Very close runner-up is my Marlin 1895 45/70.

I am really digging these answers. The funny thing is just about everyone lists really good reasons for what they have chosen, even though they choose different things.

Ive got quite a few SBR's rifles, pistols, shotguns etc but this particular 8 1/2" barrel SBR is my favorite gun. I know its like your kids. You dont want to say one is your favorite ( cough, cough, the youngest boy, cough, cough ) but that 300 BLK AR-15 SBR feeds and fires everything I run through it, is more accurate than I am and is ridiculously quiet with a silencer on it. If I had one gun to leave the home with this would be it. Probably why it lives under the seat of my truck with 5 full mags in a first aid kit :) .

Well, a few weeks ago it would have been my 4", Smith & Wesson Model 15-2, Combat Masterpiece" 38 Special.

BUT...

If I had to choose right now, my new Model 69, 44 Magnum has really impressed me. That one might win out.

any gun? probably a mossberg, benelli or Remington pump 12 ga with bird & slug barrels. if I can have 2 it's the 12 ga & my AK, or maybe the Rem 700 30-06. have to think that one over. that way I'm covered from contact to 800 yds.

Shotgun. Almost 40 years of hunting with it, my full choked 20 gauge Mossberg bolt action has taken just about any and every thing flying, walking, climbing, or slithering in the Midwest and Appalachia. Ducks, geese, deer, squirrels, rabbits, pheasants, black bear, groundhogs and so many more... No rifle or handgun can match the versatility of a shotgun.

Easy for me

It would be a Remington Rand 1911A1 that I got in 1957 through the NRA with my uncles help. I can shoot it good, I can Mexican carry it, I have at least 13 magazines, and a thousand rounds of what it likes. 230 gr. FMJ surplus.

This question gets asked pretty regularly and my choice is always a 12 gauge pump gun with several barrels.

In a time when I was forced to accept a one gun gun only life, I got by very well with a 19 inch (cut down) Mossberg 20ga 500 . It served me well for all purposes I needed. ($75)

I've often said my Colt SAA would be the last gun I'd ever sell, so there you are.

I wouldn't feel under gunned.

If as you say, the Win 94 has been in the family for 75 yrs ( you didn`t mention cal or over all condition ) it could possibly be a treasure. Plus, I don`t see 30-30 ammo being expensive. Reloading....... east and cheap.

To bad you don`t understand what you may have . Sell that thing off. Make somebody else a very happy camper.

I shoot trap weekly and keep a similar shotgun for home defense. As such I'd miss a shotgun the most. After that is choose a pistol for concealability.

Not knowing the situation surrounding the fact I only get one gun, like my house is on fire and I can only save one or the government says I am evil and I only get to keep one or my financial situation dictates I sell all but one makes it is hard to know what way to go.

The reason the situation matters is I have a couple collectable guns I do not want to lose in a fire as they would be hard to replace but they would be the first sold in a real bad financial situation as they are the most valuable but at the same time they would not be the most practical in a survival situation.

I have been collecting firearms for a long time and my taste in toys have changed a number of times over the years but I still keep going back to two platforms and that is the AK in 7.62x39 and the AR in 5.56.

So when you say pick one I have a hard time because each has their pros and cons.

The AK will take more abuse through neglect and lack of cleaning but tends to be slightly less accurate and bit heaver than most ARs depending on BBL set up and Ammo is heaver to pack around for the same round count.

The AR is lighter in most cases it tends to be more accurate but bullet weight is ½ that of the AK and requires more cleaning and lube to keep it running to its full potential.

So if I only get to choose one for this month I will go with one of my ARs but I am not sure why and if asked again next month I may change my mind and go with my AK as I like, trust and enjoy both equally well.

I think I'll say my Winchester model 12 because its awesome and very versatile.
Id sure miss the FAL and BHP a lot, though.

Things would have to be very bad in this country if I needed to make this decision, but I'll play. Of the guns I have;

As much as I like my 686P, I'd have to go with the M29 Mountain, 44mag is probably the most versatile handgun caliber for where I live.....plus, I can handload it for DA split times.

Cast Performance 255gr WFN, 0.350" meplat;

For long gun, something more potent at distance than the typical AK or AR, semi-automatic over bolt action and no magazine restrictions should that become an issue in our country. I have a 1955 SA National Match M1 Garand that can be loaded with a number of different types of bullets in the 150gr/165gr range and the 30-'06 caliber is devastating given shot placement.

The M1 has the reputation for being very reliable in many different climates and is proven in a number of different critical situations, it's heavy as is the ammunition, but survival trumps weight. :)
