If you could only keep one gun

But really, what's your just-can't-live-without gun?

Oddly, I can't pick one.
I have a Win model 94 that's been in the family for 75 years. I'd hate to part with it, but the ammo is expensive (compared to 7.62 x 39, which has about the same ballistics).

Funny, the other two contenders are 2 of my cheapest guns, the Mosin M44 and the SKS. Both could be used for defense or hunting, both are cheap to shoot, and crazy reliable.
What would you keep?

My wife is getting dangerously close to matching my gun count, so that's never going to be a problem in our home.

Besides, if I get to keep one, that one says I get to keep them all.

My wife was raised in a home without guns. When I brought home my first gun, she threatened to move into a hotel until I got rid of it.

I took her shooting, and she's OK now, but will never be as big a fan. She loves my Ruger 22/45, and 10/22.

OK, so where did the first 7 posts of this thread go?

Let's take out the wife thingy. If you could only take one gun what would you take?
I love the handguns, but can't really hunt with them.

I love my nice hunting rifle, but wouldn't readily use it for self defense.

Let's make it easier

1 rifle
1 handgun

I’m not sure I could find one firearm and have it do everything I need it to do.

If I absolutely had to I guess I would go 12ga; probably a Benelli M2 but I wouldn’t be opposed to one of the Beretta semi-autos.

Give me a second choice and I’d probably go with an AR. That opens up uppers in 22lr up to some large game hunting calibers.

With a third selection I’d go with a handgun; preferably one with a 22lr conversion kit available.

Considering the "lego" nature of the AR it could be converted to a wide range of calibers and configuration so if limited one "gun" I'd be picking it with the full selection of uppers and mags and adapters.

If I find myself in a situation in which I am forced to decide to keep only one gun, then some terrible series of events has unfolded, and the person who is forcing me to make that decision is in great danger of being hurt.

But maybe a revolver.

This would have to be a gun for everything...hunting, self-defense, survival. Either my Winchester Model 12 SS riot 12 ga. or my Marlin 336 30/30. Probably the Marlin.

My first decision would be handgun or long gun. If I went the handgun route it would likely be a Ruger Security Six. Long gun would be a harder choice.

Well ok then.. I'm kinda like plodder..

AR lower with burst, and:
5.56 SBR upper
300 BLK SBR upper

If handgun gets to be in the equation, SIG226...

I know this is just pretend, but I already miss the rest of my guns..

CZ452....Yes, I know it's only a 22, but it will serve to introduce other shooters to the joy, put food on the table, and will likely never need repair no matter how many rounds are put through it.

I know this is just pretend, but I already miss the rest of my guns..

Yeah....the loneliness in the safe is calling out to me to fill it again already.

Notice how I misdirected there and only spoke of "the" safe?

I refuse to die unless I can take my guns with me.
All kidding aside, this is very tough. I want at least 1 rifle for deer hunting and at least 1 pistol or revolver for concealed carry self-defense/home defense. A scoped .308 rifle would not be the most effective weapon at bedroom distances.

Truly, the only gun capable of killing anything on this continent whether for food or defense is a 12 gauge shotgun. From Quail to Grizzly there is no other choice that does as much by simply changing ammo. My pick is a Remington 870 pump for simplicity and reliability. I am assuming that my "one gun" has to do everything I do with a firearm.

4 inch S&W 686+. Keep a good supply of .38 wadcutters for small game, just .38" holes, not major meat damage, hot rod 357's for SD and hunting.

down to one simple

6in pc 686 light hunter with 2x-6x scope. 38 special and .357 magnum ammo comes in anything from shotshells to heavy hollowpoints good idea GBRAN. also easy to tote if you were on the move

I really enjoy these kinds of threads. I've started a couple in the past, and they're always interesting ... to see how people reason their choices.

I was glad to see you modify the conditions from your OP from one gun to two, even though it's clear that some posters did not pick up on that.

In the past, I usually specified three. But OK, I'll play.

Background. I do not own a lot of guns. Never have, never will. Has to do with my lifestyle in large part, which demands that I move around a lot, and the fact that I want to know my tools very well, and with limited time, I choose to have fewer tools.

Currently, I only own three, but a fourth is likely in the next few months.

So this is easier for me.

#1 would have to be my Marlin 336 in .30-30. Good for small to medium game. I could even take small game with a bit of powder in an empty cartridge and a buckshot pressed in. (0 or 00, I forget.) Good for hogs, and with 125 gr bullets, would do well to defend the homestead/basecamp. Plus, I just adore it.

#2: my relatively new Ruger SR9c, which is already my favorite handgun of all time (out of maybe a dozen I've owned, pistols and revolvers). It fits my small hands so well; recoil is tame (compared to the SW Airweight I just sold); 9mm is a great round (good enough for me); and so far, I shoot it well (even though I've only shot 100 rnds -- that will change next month).

If I could choose a third gun, it'd be a .22 rifle. Currently for me, that's a Remington 597 HB.
