You sleeping with your family on the second floor. You hear some noise, and you are up in hurry. You want to secure the area.

You have four different weapons loaded and ready, but you can take only one with you.

Which one of the following will you chose and why? And perhaps, how will begin your course of action to make sure there is no danger.

1. Shotgun
2. Pistol
3. Revolver
4. Assualt Rifle
......................
Last night something similar happened to my friend who does not have a guard, and chose a Revolver!

Ha...there is only ONE true choice for dealing with late-night disturbances....7.62x54R!!! Guar-an-teed to kill what ails ya.

7.62x54R will probably go through stack of intruders! But I am thinking....which 54R is made in assualt other than SVD.

I personally feel safer going room to room with a pistol or a revolver. I feel there is less chance of someone grabbing my weapon from me. I feel better with one hand free to open doors.

Laser sights on the 40 S&W, point and shoot. gotta go with it for ease of use and aim in a dark house.

Not to mention being able to have a flashlight in the other hand or to parry a physical attack. I would have said revolver, since that is the one that is closest to hand, but with a pistol equipped with a rail, I can put a flashlight right on the gun and use a two hand hold.

12ga with 2 3/4" 00 buck
I would agree with this course of action if, and only if, you can guarantee that you will have some space ahead of you while swinging around corners, etc. Otherwise, I'd rather be armed with a pistol. BEsides, none of my shotties have night sights... yet.

12ga with #4 buck. I don't plan on clearing the downstairs and I don't intend to let an intruder come up stairs where my family is. My thinking in that in the moment, #4 buck down a 42" (or whatever wide it is) stairway - which is also a natural killing funnel - at a range of less than 12 feet is the best option.

If the choice is only 1, it will be a pistol with night sights.

If two, the pistol becomes BUG to the shotgun.

I would jump out of the tactical sack, grab my tactical 12 GA and secure the area as a I wait for the tactical assault team... :neener: I'm just bustin ya cause you said "secure the area" ;)

I would get the 870 in the closet. I don't own any pistols and all my rifles are either a bolt action, I do have one semi auto rifle but its a Marlin Model 60 in .22lr.

since I'm too young for handguns, lets assume I dont have one. In that case, I'd go with a 12ga. or an AK, since those are my best options based on age and money concerns.

I'd rather go with the 12ga. so that police dont get riled up when they see bullet holes all over the neighborhood from an AK, and so they dont confiscate it and I never see it again. At least theres a chance I'd get the shottie back or that they wont take it.

My 2nd choice goes to a DogBox loaded with Dobermann. The dog is more expendable than I am, and my guns don't get taken away. Everyone wins. Except the BG, who gets chewed...

I have several pistols with lasers and laser/lights handy and usually a shotgun, but if I can get across the 6 foot to this gun it's what I'd grab.

Why?
It is well equipped for night or day, inside or outside, close up or distance, and will stop even body armor wearing BGs.

What I'd do?
Wait and listen in the bedroom to try to determine what I was up against. Then determine the best course of action.
Since I live alone anything higher than a cat will be instantly shot.

If the intruder brings any pig ears, my first line of defense will be neutralized.

Next, would be a handgun, 'cause of what others have said. Flashlight held far out to the side in case it draws fire.

I'm also becoming convinced a high-cap .22lr is the way to go for minimal flash/recoil and delivering lots of rounds in suburban family neighborhoods. I'd rather fire off a bunch of rounds if need be from a Mark II or 10/22 then get off one huge boom from a AR or shotty.

I have a Mossy 500 within easy reach of the bed, loaded with Federal low-recoil 00B. I do not use lights or lasers on any of my home-defense weapons. Hey its MY house, I know every inch of it! Why give the BGs a target? I use the shotgun for home defense. I'm a decorated military marksman, and a fair shot with a handgun, but even then a shotgun will end all arguments.

I chose my 870 Remmy 12ga with a laser, a zenon, and 6 shots of #4 Buck in 3" magnums. Followed closely by my Glock 9mm with night sights.

Grab whichever gun you can manage while simultaneously dialing 911.

You don't go rambling around to "secure the area", Sgt. York.
The only thing you need to (or should) secure is your family members - then take a defensive position and let the intruder (if there is one) deal with the potential for walking through unkonwn (to her or him) teeritory and into your copper-plated Surprise-O-Gram.
And don't use a light to show the intruder (if there is one) where to aim.

1911 45acp, but the shotgun is the close second. I would not clear a house myself if I had a high index of suspicion of an intruder. I would secure family members and call 911. But if my suspicion is low but not zero then a walk through the house pistol in hand but down at my side.
