Oops my post was made just after your revision, which I just now noticed. Changes made, target added.

:)

This is great, Mav.

I won't be able to participate - I'm closing a business and moving in May and June -
but I'll spread the word in the Marlin 39 club (click on the 2nd "levers" in my sig line).

Thanks for doing this, and I hope to participate in a later one.

Thanks, Nematocyst, glad to have you on board! I appreciate you spreading the word and I look forward to seeing you in the upcoming matches.

:)

O.K. so I thought I'd try the iron sight class this time. A little windy this morning but not so bad as to affect a .22 at 25 yards. Shot seated with a sling and elbows only on the bench. I need a lot of practice! Peep sights don't help much with old eyes.

That is a good looking rifle, and some good marksmanship to go along with it, oldgold. You set the bar pretty high for the rest of us.

:)

Ok, now the snow has finally melted! I just went out back (Aren't I the luckiest! ;)) and set up the target at 50 yards. I just sat using just my foward elbow resting on my leg (that's legal for the sporting class right?). I used my Marlin 795 with a Barska 4x scope shooting American Eagle 40 grain bullets. Just shot a 5 shot group and was done, the wind started to really blow . I scored myself as a 51. Four nine rings and a bullseye. Is this correct?
Thanks!

Yes sir.

Looks like you shorted yourself a point...should be a 52 by my count. Good job finding that bullseye.

Here's my offering - Target class using an Anschutz 1451ST entry level target .22 with Daisy Avanti micrometer peep rear sight and Daisy Globe style front, non magnified - 25 yards sitting with no sling. 3 shots per target, ammo Remington Target, 40 grain solids.

That is a nice rifle with great sights, KSCCH, looks like you know how to make the most of it too.

Hey Mav, what's amazing is when I got that rifle it had no sights. Those are actually Daisy precision BB Gun sights. They fit and work well though. Most accurate .22 I've ever been fortunate enough to own.

KSCCH, don't discount those air rifle sights, they are just as good as the equivalent rimfire sights (in many cases they are the same sights). Oh, and glad to have you on board in this month's match.

:)

Gonna try it again early next week with another rifle. I lucked into a pretty cherry condition 1960's vintage Remington 550-1 just like the one I learned to shoot with as a kid. (Still haven't forgiven my 98 year old dad for giving it to my nephew back in 2000 without even asking me if I wanted it!). Got it and an unopened 550 round value pack of Federal 36 grain hollow points with it for a hundred bucks yesterday.

Might refinish the stock but then again might not as it has a lot of character and is in really good shape for a 50 year old .22.

Hope it shoots well for you, KSCCH. I know how you feel about refinishing a well used stock, I have been in the same place several times myself. The only advice I can offer is to remember that you can always refinish it, you can't always bring back the original condition.

:)

I didn't refinish it, but I did give it a quick scrub with mineral spirits to get the surface grime off and then I gave it a couple coats of Tom's 1/3 mix stock wax. (1/3 boiled linseed oil, 1/3 turpentine and 1/3 beeswax.) Really perked it up. Here's a picture of the cleaned stock so you can compare it with the one in the previous post.

Looks great, I really like the new look, clean but simple. Furthermore I wasn't trying to say that you shouldn't refinish it (I just realized it sounded that way in my former post), just that there is no turning back once you do so make sure that is what you want. The rifle isn't an heirloom, nor is it a historical piece, so I would have probably done the same as yourself.

:)

Here's another one for your match, shot with the Remington 550-1. Stock factory open sights, 25 yards sitting, elbows rested on knees, no sling.

Ammo Federal value pack 36 grain hollow points. Top target hits 10 + 9 + 7 for a score of 26. Bottom target 10+10+10 for a score of 30 with one center bull for an extra 3 points. Total 26 + 33 = 59.

Got lucky on the bottom target. Almost looks like 4 holes, but honest, it's only 3 and I was the only one shooting .22 this afternoon so it ain't a stray from another lane.

Jim
