May Rimfire Match

Great I just assumed you took the lesser value :) Thanks I didn't do so bad after all :) I wish I had a printer here where I am so I could print more targets for my trip to the range today...wish I hadn't forgot to do that :banghead:

Now that May is almost over, what'cha gonna come up with for the June match?

I picked up another old .22 the other day, this time a pre-WW2 Marlin model 81DL bolt gun with a tubular magazine for a hundred bucks. Shoots shorts, longs and long rifles interchangeably like my Remington 550-1. Came complete with a peep sight, but the adjustments were sorta frozen so I put on a Williams direct replacement from Brownells. Shot it today and it put a whole 17 round tube of Federal 36 grain hollow points into a group smaller than a tree-rat's head at 25 yards.

Not too shabby for a 70+ year old .22. Actually it's in excellent condition, no visible wear on the bore and the stock is slightly scratched, but no deep dings. It did have a minor crack, but that was easily fixed with some Brownells acra-glas bedding epoxy. Since it doesn't have any real collectors value, I'm going to refinish the stock as I had to inlet it for the Williams sight anyway. Gonna be a good SHTF, put meat on the table, sort of rifle for sure.

Don't know, but i'm up for suggestions. Nice lookin' stick, but you have to prove your group you know...on the right sort of target (the ones posted above look about right ;)).

:)

Ok Mav, you shamed me into it. I wasn't going to enter the old Marlin 81DL in the May match, but here's a target I shot this morning.

(I didn't save the target the other day that I was bragging on so I just shot the two 3 round groups on the match target.) Took me the first 3 shots on the left target to get my breath control right.

Elbow rested, 25 yards, pre-WWII Marlin model 81DL - Williams 5D-81 peep sight, original post front, Federal 36 grain plated hollow point ammo, indoor range. I also mis-scored the target. The left one should be 2 X 9 + 1 X 10 ring for a total of 28 as one shot cut the line on the 10 ring. The right target has all 3 in the 10 with 2 of them not touching the line for the 6 point bonus. Total score of 64 the way I see it, but you are the official scorekeeper so you call it.

Great groups, KSCCH. Hard to believe the old workhorse beat out your Annie. Congrats, on a great shooting rifle.

Good shootin' I count 64, too

Great shootin' guys!

I got a line on a Marlin 60, brand new for $147.00 at Wal Mart. Good price? Bad price? What say you? I am going down in the morning to get it if y'all say good things.

Mikey!

Great price. I just bought mine new from Dicks for $149.00. Its better than any online deal too...unless you can find one at a pawn shop or something for a few bucks cheaper, it's the way to go :)

Not bad, you can find it cheaper online but not after paying th transfer fees. I say get it and report back with a couple targets in hand. ;)

Following your advice, I went and got it this morning. When I got it home and took it out of the box, I noticed an area on the butt of the stock that I had not seen at the store. There was a 1/2" X 2" "L" shaped drip mark where the top coat of the finish had been applied too heavily and formed an ugly drip mark. I used 350 grit sandpaper and got it down close to even height with the rest of the finish and then used 1000 grit to get it the rest of the way. Then I used some 00 steel wool to clean it up and just rubbed it with my hand to add some oil. It turned out better than new!

I will be printing off some targets right now and will be going out this afternoon to do some sighting in of the Center Point 3-9X32 scope I put on with low Weaver tip off rings. I got some Federal, Remington, and Winchester ammo, to see which one it likes. I may get some CCI stuff to see how it does with that later, but I think this will be a good place to start.

Thank you guys for the help. I know this really wasn't the place to get this kind of answers, but you guys are the best people to ask, that's why I asked here. I will post my targets when I can either tonight or tomorrow morning after church.

Oh yeah, I will put a pic of the rifle and the spot I fixed on here too, so you guys can see my handy work. ;)

Mikey!

Well I was going to enter the competition this month (as my first) but after shooting I decided I will wait, the results were not good.

However I am posting because I learned about OnTarget Software from the monthly competition threads.

To anyone on this thread that does not use OnTarget but is serious about tracking progress I highly suggest giving it a shot. It won't make you better but it is a great way to know how well you did and the best part is that it is ridiculously easy to use. Since downloading and trying it out I am now loading it onto my Netbook (miniature laptop thingy) and my digital camera is coming to every range trip with me.

OnTarget can be downloaded here:

+1 to what Bigalexe said about "OnTarget" software. It's a great tool, and I think you're going to love it.

And yes, Bigalexe, if you can't join us this month, please dive in next month!

Well, here is the best I could do on short notice. It took me about 1/2 hour to get the scope sighted in to what turned out to be about 45 yards. I didn't go to the range, it is 60 miles from here, so I just went out to the BLM land and found a spot with a good backdrop and a hill beind it. I could only squeeze 45 yards. So, I have disqualified myself from the running. I mis-spoke earlier about which scope I put on the new Marlin 60. It is a Crossman 3-9X32, not Center Pointe 3-9X32.

I tried 3 different brands of ammo. Winchester, Remington, and Federal. It turns out my rifle really seems to like the federal. As you can see on the last page of my file, this was my best effort. This was one long ragged hole. I gave it a score of 65, but it was probably 55 or 60 after looking closer at it on the computer. It is really hard to tell what is in and what ain't.

The funny thing that happened with the Federal ammo only was that after the first shot after each reload, the spent case didn't eject all the way and it didn't load the next one. But then after manually ejecting the shell and loading the next one, it shot just great. Maybe it had to do with the temperature. Maybe it needs oil, I am not sure. I put a few drops of oil on the slide before going out today. Maybe I need to take it apart and make sure everything is lubed real good. Nothing excessive, just normal oiling. Anyone ever had this happen to them?

Mikey!

Here are some pics of the rifle and a PDF of my 5 targets. The right side of the butt at the back of the hump, almost to the but plate is where the drip area was. It is on the right side shown in these 3 pics.

Lookin' good Mikey, the new stick and the target.

Bigalexe, OnTarget works pretty good, honestly never thought of mentioning it here. Thanks for bringing it up.

:)

You should have seen the set up I was using Mav! LOL I had a bucket turned upside down, with a large fishing tackle box on top of it and another tackle box on top of that one, and then my flannel jacket laid over that. I used that as my rest. That contraption was wiggling in every direction. It was like trying to balance a golf ball on a wet noodle!

I was sitting in a lawn chair and could barely stay still enough to shoot. I was a hoot though!

Thank you and others so much, for recommending that rifle to me. I really like it!

My new (less than 1 month) hates the Federal stuff too. Mine fails to eject/feed every 50 rounds or so with it...I wouldn't say that every tube fails, though. The Federal Lightning stuff is specifically what fails. I have a box of the bulk stuff I am shooting today, so I will let you know how it goes.

But yeah, I get GREAT groups from the Fed stuff but my Marlin doesn't particularly like it too much.

Mikey,
It probably just needs cleaning & oiling. Be careful though, don't do like I did when I got my model 60 a few years back. After each range session, I'd blow it out heavily with WD-40 and then load the tube back up with ammo, leaving the chamber empty.

Next time to the range, the first 5 or so wouldn't go bang! Took a while to figure it out, but the leftover fumes from the WD-40 were penetrating the bottom few in the tube and killing powder/priming compound! WD-40 = nasty junk. I don't even allow the stuff in the house anymore - :D

I use cheap brake cleaner (keep it off the stock though) to flush it out and then a light coat of Break Free CLP on the moving parts. You can use "Gun Scrubber" if you like, but Walmart brake cleaner is much cheaper and pretty much the same stuff chemically. You can buy 2 BIG cans of brake cleaner for about what you'd spend on one small can of "Gun Scrubber".

By the way, that Crossman scope is made by Center Point or vice versa, not sure which way it goes, but they aren't too terribly bad. Walmart sells the Center Point stuff and I put one on a Savage .308. It held up just fine and was still on the .308 when I sold it. The guy that got it is shooting high power matches with it and even winning a few.

My 60 gets cleaned after ever range trip...so in my case I don't think it's a dirty rifle. And like I said, it's a brand new gun (also cleaned when I got it from the manu) so it can't be that dirty inside. Although, since it is so new still, it may slowly start to like Feds more as I shoot them more and the gun gets more action. We will see

I had only put 45 shots downrange with the Winchester SuperX, which didn't have any failures at all, then 5 shots from the Remington Thunderbolt, same thing, no failure, and then when I switched to the Federal Lightning stuff, after the first shot, FTF. Every tube, the first shot FTF'd.

I wonder if the rifle just needs to be "Broke in" some more. Because if it shoots them so darn good, I would like to use them. I may just go get a box of bulk and get to shooting to get it a little more broke in, and then try them again.

Maybe it will help. Is there a lighter spring, that may help?

Mikey!

Mickey

Winchester SuperX is HYPER velocity ammo...you shouldn't be shooting this with your Marlin 60. The manual specifically states not to use hypervelocity ammo, HIGH velocity ammo is OK though. The Winchester box doesn't say it (shame on them), but it is. 16xx FPS is comparable to other hypervelocity ammo I've seen. Just an FYI

But yeah, the Thunderbolt stuff shoots great in my gun. Fed Lighting also gives me great groups but I get an occasional failure. I went and shot probably 100-150 rounds today with any failure...maybe 30-40 of those were Fed Lightning. Maybe my gun is getting broke in or I had a lucky day.

I took apart my Marlin 60 today. When feeling the slide edges, I noticed that there were a lot of sharp and protruding bits of metal, so I used a small honing stone with some gun oil on it and smoothed out the edges. The feel slick and not sharp any more. I think this may have something to do with it. I am sure that with a long break in period, these small bits would have worn down on their own or created a slot in the receiver to allow for them to move freely, but I would rather have it start off right and not wear something that shouldn't be worn down. The slide feels like it moves more freely than before, so I am hoping I am right about this. I will get some more range time soon. I will let you know how it goes.

Mikey!

Oh as for the Super X, I looked up some ballistics on it and it said 1330fps, I will look some more, but I will discontinue using it until I know more fore sure. Thanks for the heads up! ;)

I just got back in from shooting up 2 boxes of nothing but Federal Lightning ammo. Out of the 100 shots and 10 or so reloads, I had not one failure. I reloaded with 5 shots, 10 shots, and 15 shots, and I couldn't get it to jam in any way. The last 40 shots were as fast as I could pull the trigger, and still no jams. I am happy as I could possibly be with my new rifle. I just wish I had printed off more match targets, because the place I usually go to shoot 50 yards was free today and I shot one of the most awesome 10 shot groups I have ever shot in my life. You can cover it with a dime, well, all but one shot you can cover with the dime. I'll post a pic of it later if you want to see it!

Mikey!
