I find it amusing that "the .380 is recognized as THE MINIMUM effective defensive handgun caliber for self defense." and yet people have still used 22s, 25s and 32s for self defense over and over.
You presume these people using .380s, .32s, and .25s are 'experts'.
Jeff Cooper once said something to the effect, "Anything that is really popular cannot be really good for not that many people are expert in any particular subject."
Personally I don't know anyone that would like a 380 round to the chest at 10' or so..
