I have a 14 year old arthritic beagle. she gets her thyroid pills in peanut butter. she loves peanut butter. pretty funny watching her lick for five minutes after wards trying to get it all out.

I feel bad for you and your dog and hope both of you come out OK.

Don't let this threat to the neighborhood off the hook. I am not one for taking the law into one's own hands but if you are unable to get the animal control people to confiscate and destroy this dog immediately, you may need to take action to protect yourself.

Don't let the owner off the hook either. Any house that is worth $600-700,000 is worth getting a lien on. If the person living there does not own it, it puts you in a better position. It is true that it is easier for the lawyer if they have HO insurance, and if there is a mortgage there will be HO insurance. Mortgages have to be recorded and are public record. Any attorney worth his salt can find out if there is a mortgage very quickly.

The other thing you want to consider is filing criminal charges against the guy, if nothing else to get his attention. If you make enough nuisance of yourself, the authorities may take some action against this threat to the neighborhood. There is always the press to consider as well.

There may be other people in the neighborhood you could enlist in the fight too. They probably don't want a vicious dog loose in the area either.

the point is you have options and you should pursue them.

i just don't understand why you haven't filed a formal complaint with the police and/or animal control

this is serious business ... i would be down at the police chief/county sheriff office demanding that this threat to the neighborhood be removed immediately

i'm just happy that i live out in the country now, where problem dogs just get shot ;)

HO insurance is indeed important, and may provide coverage for this.

You've had more than enough injury to justify a civil suit.

Stop talking to this guy.

if he is on a fixed income he should have thought about that before leaving his dog unattended. If it is under five thousand take him to small claims court and get him to pay. A little something my butt, make him pay for every last cent and try for some pain and suffering too.

bad to better... suddenly to worse

I just took my dog out to the backyard today. He immediately pooped, rather squirted out, a viscous stream of red ooze.

Silverlance yo umight want to get a sample of that for the vet & run STalin in to the vet tomorrow. This long after the attack I wonder why he's passing loose, possibly bloody stool?

I'd take him in first thing tomorrow.
--Vic

yup

took an old pill bottle and scooped some into it. it's some foul smelling stuff. bugger it all, i hate this whole affair.

i'm heading out with him to the vet first thing after work.

Stalin is on anti-biotics, yes?

It just might be his GI system is upset at them...especially if he hasn't been eating well.

Good luck with your pup.

That dog would have been full of .357 mag when I was done with him. A loving owner will not put his animal in the way of harm or in the way to harm others.

Yeah, try that in Van Nuys, CA and tell us how that turns out for you (I think you're allowed one phone call).

As I said before, it's great how so many folks on this thread sure have some great advice.

Making any progress...??

Well, did you sue? Has the Rottenweiler been euthanized yet? How's YOUR poor dog doing...??....

any updates?

After meeting Jim March a few years ago when I lived in San Francisco
I bought a cold steel grand vaquero, a great big knife that seemed like
overkill & now feels normal.
Get your self a big cold steel folder. You'll feel better.

This dude is a sissy. I have been stabbed in the leg and did not whine this much. Really, stabbed. I tried to be nice on this. But i can take it. Freaken man up.

If above actions do not remove the dog, believe I would take action on my own to do so.
At the minimum I would send a letter to the animal control department describing the situation, and that you will be available to testify in the future in the event a child is injured or killed by this dog! And ask for a response letter with the recipients name in the department who should be contacted for future problems. And copy the head office of your location (city, county or whatever), a local vet and newspaper, and show on the letter that it is copied to these locations. Send it certified or registered (the one that gets you a documented response from post office that it was delivered).
That breed dog is a threat to other dogs and probably to people, and must be controlled or put down.

Well this could be a long drawn out process to get it resolved , I had a coworker attacked by a dog while taking a walk , the last I heared she was still trying to get something done about it and the dog had attacked at least one child in the neighborhood prior to her , and this whole thing has now almost been two years . The dogs owners were both lawers and know how to dodge supeonas .

Lawers that she spoke to wouldn't take the case as it doesn't involve enough money .

As far as needing to "Man Up" a knife doesn't have the germs that are in a dogs mouth therefore infections don't set in as fast or as badly with a knife wound , also a knife as a rule makes a clean cut , a dog bite is usually a tear rather than a cut because the teeth are not going in and out at the same angle and a dog will pull back to inflict maximum damage as it removes it's teeth as well as having the victim trying to pull away from the attacking animal .

I train police dogs for a living. I have trainined personel protection dogs for twenty years in and out of the military. I have been bit worse and whined a whole lot less. check out my website. Go to comments and photos. you can see me, Steve, get bit. the last bite on the vid, went through the sleave of the full body suit I was wearing.

Again, man up sissy boy.

Stevo:

The main differences Stevo, is that you get bit by your own negligence & silverlance's dog got bit through a third party's negligence. silverlance does not make a habit of jumping into dog fights, whereas that appears to be a requirement in your job.

If you recall, silverlance had his hand cut up by the retracto-leash while the dog fight occurred. He did not get bit. I am currently in a position where a hand injury would be a much more serious threat to my livlihood than a leg injury.

As to a comparison of injuries sustained and driving in despite them, I bet any number of us could play that cheese-richard game of one-upsmanship.

I hope silverlance's dog recovers, he himself is doing well, and that he manages to find some way to hold the attacking dog's owner responsible.

The cut from the leash would have been a broad, dirty and *unsanitary* as hell wound. To the palm of the hand.

I'll take a stab to the leg any day, thank'ya'verry'much.

C,mon now, Jim. Easy. We have all been hurt worse. Not my point. Not doing anything about it. And whining about for months. Thats my point. Dogs fight.

A rope burn is a bummer. The dogs owner is a dirtbag. But all this drama. c,mon now...

You are soooo right on!

But let's put it in perspective; we live in a world of the feminized man. What do you expect......a man-up? :)
.

I'm on my county's Animal Control Advisory Board (we oversee the shelter and ACO operations) and I'd like to know the outcome of this as well. So, if y'all could take your purse-fight to PM's so as not to get this thread locked, I'd be much obliged. ;)

Just an old farts opinion...

I don't (thankfully) live in California, and I don't know precisely how a situation like this might be handled there.

But, I DO live in SE Ga. and if the same situation happened here I have a very good idea of what would have transpired shortly thereafter. I'm not talking about a macho "butt-whuppin'" which only gets YOU in trouble, but I think the gentleman who said dial 911, get treatment for your injury and paperwork validation that the incident did in fact occur gave the best advice. Report the attack to the local authorities, again for paperwork verification more than anything else. Call a lawyer.

In Georgia to the best of my knowledge a bad dog is a lawsuit looking to happen. Having a Rottie, German Shephard, pit bull, etc. is just plain stupid, UNLESS you are willing to keep the animal from harming others.. If you cannot keep the animal secure you are looking to part with your money sooner or later.

I've heard (but not verified) than even posting a "BAD DOG" sign offers you no protection in case the animal hurts someone. In fact the very sign itself just indicates the fact that you KNEW you had a dangerous animal.....

In years past my wife and I have had: 1 Rottie/2 Chows/1 pit bull/dobe mix/ 1 dobe.. At the time we lived in the country and our 5 acres was surrounded by a 4' chain link fence. The gate was kept closed and fortunately we never had a problem. That was in years past, and now our home insurance company won't even allow us to have such animals and still be covered.

If a wacko can win a million dollar judgement because she was too stupid to know that McDonald's coffee is hot, how can you expect a 12 person jury to handle a "vicious" dog attack?

I love animals, and I would love to have another Chow, but in 2006 it's just not smart.

If I were the dog's owner I would be shedding myself of the "law suit looking to happen Rottie" immediately. If I was so lucky as not to be sued over this attack I would ensure it wouldn't happen again...

Just my old fart opinion.

Best Wishes,

JP

I've been stabbed, tied up

and stabbed in the back as I lay helpless on the floor (NYC gun laws to thank)

& I hope that Silverlance and his dog have a speedy recovery and have not witnessed any undue complaints from the original poster.

Lets seek to help other gunnies! & unite against the common enemy!

In order to find out the owner of the house, just get the address and go to the tax accessor's office. Tell them you are thinking of buying it and would like to see their records on the property. You may even be able to do it on-line. There you can find out if there has been any recent transferrs of said property. In some states property must be transferred so many years prior to the incident to be protected. If say the limit is 3 years and it was tranferred in the last 6 months that can be construed as an attempt to hide assests. You will also find the legal owners name and possible address. It is all public record. As a former Private Investigator this works very well, especially on-line. If your lawyers have not done this by now personnally I would begin to question their competence. This is esay stuff to find out. Remember your lawyer works for you, not the other guy. If he/she doesn't handle your situation satisfactorily you can fire them, the file a complaint with the BAR Association, or sue them for botching your case. The later is difficult to prove though, lawyers are tight as a tick in protecting each other.
