I voted 03a3 but didn't see the M1 option...go with the M1. Other than the list I would get a K98....love those mausers

I'm pretty sure there are some milsurps kicking around somewhere.

I was under the impression there were no surplus M14s around due to the select-fire capabilty. And if there are any floating around, they aren't going to be cheap.

Other: P17, the big homely sister that did all the work, while the dainty '03 got all the guys attention.:neener:

on a couple occassions I have seen M14'S for sale at gunshows on true military recievers built with surplus parts.Semi auto version.

I cannot attest to whether they were rewelds or not...or if they were rewelds whether that is safe to shoot.

.45guy once on another board I got my a** chewed out:uhoh: for calling the rifle a P17.I was directed that the proper designation is M1917.

it is a great rifle.

I understand there was a very brief run of legal factory built M14s semiauto rifles for competetition. I would assume they would command a HUGE pricetag now.

C'mon lionking we stole the design from the Brits' P14, might as well give them a little credit;)

My M1 Garand converted to 7.62 NATO. It's the best fit for my southpaw self of the options presented, and I can shoot tolerably well with it out the the limits of my middle-aged eyes. If the option of an FAL had been present, it might've been a toss-up, even though I don't presently own one.

That’s why we say m1917, Enfield. :)

On topic, the posted question is too hard to answer.

K-31 was followed VERY closely by the Garand. It just has a bigger "neato" factor, and reloading would keep me in ammo just fine.

If the question were which TWO, I think you'd have a clear majority for the Garand/K-31 combo.

Grump you have it right , My k-31 is tops , but my CMP M-1 owns my heart.
My M-1 and I watch the History chanel together quite often.

This goes back to an interesting discussion I had with a friend that is an amateur film maker, that seems more and more true. The basic gist was that according to Hollywood, T.V., and game producers the only wars that ever really happened were WWII, and Vietnam.

according to Hollywood, T.V., and game producers the only wars that ever really happened were WWII, and Vietnam.

May have something to do with the fact that those are the only conflicts with enough widespread (I hesitate to say) appeal to be marketable as products. The Spanish-American war (etc) might be interesting to some, but probably not enough to generate enough capital to make a game/movie today.

Back to topic: not enough options in the poll. Bring on the machine gun milsurps!

Even though I don't have one, I have shot one and my nod goes to the Garand

ammo supply will ALWAYS be there, its not as ammo hungry as other self-loaders are, and the 30-06 is a proven, dang near kill anything cartridge. Not to detract from the other cartridge/rifle combo's on the list...I DID waver for a moment on the 03A3 for the exact same reasons...but the parts aren't as prevalent nowadays.

since the 91/30 isnt on the list. i chose garand. i consider them equals int he apples to oranges logic. one is the best of what it is

91/30 best
Cheap, reliable, easy fix, ammo everywhere

Garand
Quality, Semi auto, reliable, ammo everywhere

if i was to choose a rifle that i would be able to easily fix, hide out in the mountains, or to give to a new shooter id choose the 91/30

if i had to choose a rifle to make my way through suburbia id take the m1

If it wasn't for the :cuss: government and their absurd laws, my choice would be easy, a surplus BAR.

I'll have to say that I'm surprised that the Garand didn't do a little better. The K31 must be really good. And I'm shocked that the Mosin carbine got any votes, it must have hidden good qualities (I guess the $69 is a good quality). Thanks for everyone's opinions.

I'm surprised you did'nt list the German 98K. That's the one I would keep. It's the standard by which all other bolt-action milsurps are judged.
