so i was discussing this with an instructor. if it wasnt a gunfight what close quarter weapon would you choose against a knife? he said knife because well he knows how to manipulate one really well....i said black jack (the extendable stick with a lead ball at the end) because i dont have to get in too close to attack

i find the only disadvantage of the BJ is the fact that it cant be thrown like a knife...then again i wouldnt be standing still so a moving target would only be hit by a really lucky bastard or a really trained bastard..either way ill take my chances with a BJ

I'd take the knife. Since I have always had a talant for being able to trow those suckers with decent accuracy. You think people will look at me strange if they notice my 5 inch Ka-Bar on my belt.

If it has to be one or the other I would say blackjack. If that is your call you can hit twice if you have to. How ever if you stab them and do it right they are dead. Then if they didnt need to be killed you made the wrong call. Maybe carry both if you can then if you cant stop them with the club you draw steel and end the fight with it.

I'll take the 'jack. I throw a knife very well (used to anyways) - at a stationary target. Some years back, we hung a side of beef dressed in a field jacket and started chucking knives at it. I'm here to tell ya that a swinging side of beef is nothing like a still piece of wood.
I'll take the 'jack.

if you stab someone you can definitley make it deadly, but let me remind you that a blow to the head with the BJ is as or even more dangerous than a stab.

you can stop a wound from bleeding but you cant do much to a hit on the head...

When I entered law enforcement the slap jack or convoy rode in ever deputies and highway patrolmans car. Issue uniform pants even had a pocket made for either. Seeing the slap jack used many times in action I would have to vote for the 10" Texas slapjack.

The Blackjack.

If I had my pick, I'd actually prefer an 8" Gerber pack hatchet. For much the same reason as the blackjack. Blackjacks work by applying blunt force. A hatchet does the same, but with the benefit of a crushing/chopping edge. Once the blackjack or hatchet is in motion, it is unlikely to be deflected away and will transfer awesome amounts of energy at the point of impact.

You think that throwing your knife is an advantage?

:scrutiny:

I think you need a different instructor or mindset.....

Just my opinion.

yes it is an advantage

throwing your weapon is definitley an advantage because you dont have to get up close and risk being hurt....

Throwing your weapon's a pretty lousy idea, IME. Spears, okay. Knives... what happens if you hit the guy with the handle, not the pointy end? He's got whatever weapon he had before, plus your knife, and you ain't got nuttin' at all.

Blackjacks? Dunno. If the handle's sturdy enough to strike with, I'd probably go with it. Longer reach, wider variety of uses. I'd opt for a sturdy walking stick above either one, I reckon. More innocuous, with longer reach.

Old Mountain Man saying to tenderfeet. "Never throw your knife or hawk!" Leaves you empty handed.

You seem to be talking about a baton instead of a blackjack. Baton gives you reach and I will take that over a knife anyday. Blackjacks are mostly small, lead weighted, leather slappers.

This is the high road, right? Bugger...

Closed for lack of reality, which is a requirement for threads started in S&T.

Blackjacks are prohibited items at nearly every police department now. Many states actually list them specifically by name in a statute and classify them as "offensive weapons" for use by an armed citizen.

Throwing your knife in a fight is one possible option, but is a pretty damned silly one. I'm also closing the thread before you get piled upon for it, too.

I suggest you continue this line of conversation back in the dojo. Its usefulness is pretty limited here in S&T.
