Welcome to the March Rimfire Match! The match is open to any and EVERY 22 caliber (as well as 17 and 20 caliber) rimfire rifle including the perennial favorite .22LR, as well as the .22Short, .22Long, .22 Mag., .17HM2, .17HMR, and 5mm Rem RF Mag (as well as any oddball rimfires that you might have). This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

There are Two Optics Divisions:
->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 25yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 50yds.

There are Two Rifle Classes:
->Unlimited/Target Rifles (highly modified rifles, rests, target sights, high magnification optics- over 10x [in the appropriate division] may be used)
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles)

Target Class can be shot from any position, Sporting Class is shot from any position without a rest or sandbags. Use of a sling is encouraged for both divisions.

25/50Yd. Target: See attachment. This month's "golf" target was a custom creation by a fellow THR member; I think you'll find it to be interesting and fun, but also challenging as well.

Scale to 100% on standard 8.5x11in. paper. The objective is to get the bullet in the "hole" (breaking the line is fine too). Fire as many shots as necessary (up to five) at each bullseye/hole. Just like golf the lower the score the better! Scored as 1pt per shot, unless you go into a sand trap which adds 2pts.; for a total of 90 possible points (but 9 would be the best possible score ;)). Feel free to add color around the "holes" to better see the smaller ones (may be particularly useful when shooting with irons). When you are satisfied you've done your best post (or shoot me a PM) a photo of your target scoring with the following information: Forum name or name you want posted in the results, Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo, Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different division/class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated. All submissions due before April 1st.

Very creative target. Boy those "holes" are awfully small...but it looks like it will be a lot of fun! I have a feeling that I'm going to have to use a lot of ammo to get a score I'm happy with :).

Yeah, I think it'll be fun, and no doubt challenging. I just hope that I won't need all 45 rounds to complete the target. :uhoh:

LOL! My golf game is terrible... I consider it a good round if I finish net even on balls lost and found. That's a challenging target.

Hehehe, last time I made an attempt to play golf they had to cordon off the area for other's safety. :uhoh: I'm hoping this will prove to be my best golf round ever! :D

+1, it has went back into the 50s here over the past couple of days...I want my 70s back! :neener:

Looks like a fun target. Nice job on the leaderboard as well. Looking forward to shooting this one (assuming the rain dies down by next week). Seems like spotting scopes are a must, especially with irons, otherwise you may end up taking shots you don't need.

Can't take credit for the leaderboard, it was donated by a friend that likes to piddle with Photoshop. Now all I have to do it figure out how to modify it without changing the link location.

I agree with your assessment regarding the spotting scope, especially if you are shooting at a formal range.

:)

Welcome to the match, armoredman. Somebody has to represent CZ here. ;)

You did mean that just touching the hole was good enough right? I took that as what you meant when you said just breaking the line counted. If I'm wrong please tell me and I'll keep trying.
Yep, you just have to break the line.

Golly gee, Jeff; that's one heck of a way to get us started! Looks like this one is a par 10 course.

:)

Like Mav said, Jeff, Good Shooting! This target looks challenging on my computer monitor, so I KNOW it's gotta be tough at the range!

Nice shooting. Are you sure that's a keyhole on #4? Looks like the paper just tore funny. Did you shoot off a rest/bipod/similar? That's the biggest determinant between sporting and target.

I agree, I think it just happened to tear that way. It doesn't appear to be wide enough for a keyhole.

That is the biggest factor, but his scope magnification (fixed 36x) was too high for sporting. My main goal with the divisions was to segregate what someone would likely use out in the field for squirrel hunting and the like from a dedicated target rifle.

:)

BTW I only included the info about my rifle being stock because some people don't respect the Savages like they should IMO. They're great shooters IMO. Mine has done some things that I sure can't do with other rifles or at least not very often. I could get lucky once in a while I guess.
Don't know why that is, I think they are on par with CZ (though not as consistent IMO), and available for quite a bit less. My next rimfire will likely be a Savage 93R17-TR or TRR...but for now I have decided to pile gobs of money into the 10/22. Just bought a new TacSol barrel for it about 10min. ago! I might even peel off the old CenterPoint in favor of a Nikon Monarch 6.5-20x44mmAO that I have rolling around in the safe (though this will eventually end up on the aforementioned Savage because the reticle is too fine for hunting).

I got to looking at the paper was ripped and folded back from the second shot. I was able to easily fold it over and make it look right. I did another scan and I posted just the #4 hole to show something. If I hit it on the first shot it was just by a few molecules. I though I had hit it and maybe I did scrape it just a little but it would be a stretch to think it should count.
Personally I wouldn't count it either, but if you did I wouldn't complain because it is too close to call (without a gauge) and you have the target at your disposal, and therefore the best view in the house.

My thoughts, experiences, and observations on the Savage vs. CZ are summed up as follows:

  • CZ has better workmanship and attention to details.
  • Savage *can* cost a great deal less (though neither is particularly costly, nor the best overall value on a tight budget).
  • CZ easily has better iron sights from the factory (but aperture sights are the real standard and neither comes standard with em', but Savage offers a peep as a factory option and there are aftermarket options for both).
  • Savage has more available models.
  • CZ is more tolerant of cheap ammunition on average.
  • Savage has more factory & aftermarket accessories.
  • CZ affords better consistency from rifle to rifle (though I have seen more good Savages than bad ones).
  • Neither has a very user friendly magazine, but both seem to work well enough and do so reliably.
  • Both tend to be very accurate without modifications...and often top the list of this very Rimfire Match.
  • I'm getting tired of listing things...best thing to do is just get a CZ for Monday, Wednesday, & Friday shooting and a Savage for Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday! :p

I was raised to not target shoot/hunt on Sunday, but you could do a great deal worse than either of those. I don't have one (though everyone I know does), but the Marlin M-60 is probably the best value in a rimfire rifle...and the Ruger 10/22 definitely has the strongest aftermarket.

:)

Well, I gave it a try yesterday but could barely even see the smaller holes at 25m. I shot 2 rounds at each (prone unsupported) and hit 4 or 5 of them, also hit two sand traps.

Other than that it was a pretty good day at the range, wasn't nearly as cold as last week either.

I was raised that way, too, Mav. Our .22 rifles are my kids' single-shot youth .22 - Marlin 915YN, and my really old 10/22. So, whatever day I get around to shooting this thing, it'll be one of those.
