New Years Eve Rimfire Match

Mav,
This Savage Mark II had a really atrocious trigger pull which was why I really had trouble keeping everything inside the black on those 1/2" dots, so I started looking for a solution to that problem. The original pull (that I shot the match with) was just shy of 8 pounds. No overtravel and it broke clean, just heavy.

Found a thread in the Savage forum over on rimfirecentral.com with instructions on how to do a trigger job on the non-accutrigger Mark II.

Took the trigger/sear assembly out and snipped 2 coils off the return spring, polished the sear engagement surfaces (sear AND striker) to a mirror finish with jeweler's rouge and put an .025 brass shim under the rear mounting screw when I reassembled it. Now it breaks like glass (still with no overtravel) at 3.0 pounds even. Of course, I thumped the butt of the stock on the floor a number of times with it cocked to make sure it wouldn't slamfire and it's still totally safe.

Dang, I love it when a plan comes together. My Eley ammo will be here Monday, and I'm gonna do another range trip either Monday or Tuesday. Think I'll try that "Candle Flame" target with it just for giggles. No need to re-shoot the match target this month I don't think unless I just wanna get them 3 holes in the 1/2" dots closer to the center :)

Orlando,
Dang, that's pretty. Bit too rich for my blood though, I gotta rescue 'em from Bubba's clutches these days.

You gonna give even my .17M2 a run with that one fer sure!

Jim

Its actually nothing more than a Kimber 82 surplus rifle in a set of new Sunday Clothes.
I bought her but dont have my hands on her yet.

Beautiful rifle, Orlando. I look forward to seeing how she performs. Looks like you and KS are going to be some stiff competition!

:)

I've followed this thread every month since I've joined and it just makes me wanna get to the range. Unfortunately I can't bring my rifles with me to college :(. I'm looking forward to submitting my target next month while I'm home.

Took the Savage .17M2 back to the range after dropping the trigger pull to 3 lbs. this morning after UPS delivered my case of Eley ammo.

I re-zeroed it at 100 yards and aside from the fact that I drank too much coffee this morning, turned in a few tolerable groups. The 100 yard groups with this .17 are as good or better than I get at 50 with the Romanian M69 so the .17 is now the "go-to" gun in the stable :D

Lookin' good, Jim. The only thing I caution you about is using it for game destined for the dinner table...it will flat tear up a squirrel and I imagine it will do likewise on a rabbit (never tried it...cause I didn't want to spoil good bunny meat).

:)

I usually shoot bunnies in the head anyway. That way the meat doesn't get spoiled easily and as for tree rats, if they sit still long enough, it's a head shot there too. Scope on this thing is a 4-12 X 40 and at 12 power I can easily pot a squirrel's head at 100. They aren't skittish enough 'round yere that I gotta stalk 'em anyway. It's easy to get within 20-30 yards. They'll get halfway up a tree and then look at you around the tree trunk. Pop the dominant male and all the other males in the neighborhood clap for ya and immediately start squabbling over which one's gonna take over the harem.

The heat ain't working on the indoor range I shoot at = that should even it up a bit. Not quite sure just when I can get there this month, but will shoot it with the Romanian M69 trainer.
Sorry to go off topic:
I have a Romanian too, bought it to start teaching my son how to shoot.
I'll bet you a Quarter I can hit the paper using the old iron sights, doubt I'll hit black, but pretty sure I can hit the paper. Now I have an excuse to get out and shoot it myself ;-)

No scope on it mainly because I can't find rings that close to .32 as measured on calipers. Youhave any luck finding some? Shoot me a PM

KSCCHTrainer, head shots would be no problem...it'll pop 'em like a balloon.

Hunter72, I have heard (not sure where) that it is best to drill and tap, then use a standard weaver base (for 10/22 or similar to follow the top contour as closely as possible). Hope this is of some help.

:)

I picked up a brand new Savage MKII TR today. Hope it puts me back in the running.

Clint

Looking forward to seeing your results with the Savage. I've been considering getting a 17 HMR from Savage. People seem to swear by the brand and if you put up some nice groups it might persuade me to get one. Not that I really need a reason to get a new rifle or anything....

I will get out and shoot it as soon as possible, kind of busy right now with Christmas and all. This Savage is chambered in .22lr, but I use to have a Savage Mako in .17 HMR and I will tell you what that thing could shoot! I could shoot out shotgun shell primers at 50 yards all day long. I just talked to the guy I sold it to yesterday and he said he is hitting things out to 300 yards with it. Savage makes a really accurate rifle.

Same story here; a friend of mine has a basic heavy barreled 93R17 and it does pretty dang well also (though the stock is a bit flimsy).

:)

Holly cow, gvnwst!

How have you been? I haven't seen you around here in a long time, probably been close to a year for me. I hope all is well. Are you going to compete in the rimfire matches?

Ho Ho Ho!! Merry Christmas!!! Here's one I got to shoot yesterday on Christmas Eve Day. Hopefully it uploads OK. New computer, still trying to figure out the software.

I score it as a 41.

CZ 452, Weaver 3-9 x 32 AO
SK Standard Plus ammo
50 yds, benchrest and sandbags
