New Years Eve Rimfire Match

What if I want to object (NOT!)?

Good shooting Jon! It looks like it's touching the black to me. I still need to get my .22 down to the range and shoot this month's target. Wife has been keeping me busy getting trees trimmed here (don't want any power outages due to limbs taking out the service line if we get an ice storm), that I haven't gotten the .22 to the range. Did take the 91/30 Mosin there to test out a new firing pin spring as part of a beta test group over on surplusrifleforum.com but the range was so busy I didn't have time to shoot the .22 as well. Maybe next week.

Well, if you guys want to give it to me, I'll take it. :) I blew up the scan a little and it looks like I did nick it, just barely.

I know someone's going to get those 5 bonus points, I'm going to try for them next week.

Yep, no question about it, you got it.

Looks like this match is going to be a close one!

:)

I'd like to try this target again if Midway wasn't completely out of SK and Wolf Match ammo, grrrrr. I don't have enough left to complete a target. I initially bought 5 different brands of match ammo with those two firing the best. The Eley wasn't particularly impressive though I heard you need to shoot 20+ rounds before it starts to shoot well.

Pocket Rocket, I just checked Midway and they seem to have gotten in both Wolf (except for cases of 5k Target), and SK; they have some Lapua Midas (amongst others) and RWS as well if you want to give one of those a whirl.

:)

Score!! That's great news since the original dates they were expected to have them in-stock were the first week of Jan. I don't like placing puny orders on Midway and a few bricks of match ammo ensures that never happens.

I am the same way...in fact I have a small list of stuff that I plan to buy on my next order and a few things in the wish-list to buy next year. I usually add a box or two of some new ammo or bullet to try because it typically doesn't add any additional shipping (and most of what I use is hard to find locally).

:)

Thanks for the link, Orlando. I will check them out when I need more ammo...looks like they have a bit of everything and the prices aren't too bad either.

:)

Ok, I am relatively new here to THR and all I have to say is thank you everyone for being good sports about this competition stuff. To me, a competition, though fun to win are all about just getting out, shooting, and having some good 'ol fun. People arguing and stuff like that ruin the fun the fastest and it is great not to have any of it. I am looking forward to hopefully getting out to the farm and sending some rounds downrange for the sporting class :)

Good luck to everyone, and lets have some fun :)

Welcome, txhoghunter! That is exactly how I feel. We try to keep it challenging, but keeping it fun and introducing new shooters (especially young folks) is the primary goal. Good luck.

:)

Glad this is a "rimfire" match.
One of my friends on the Kansas Concealed Carry forum was needing to sell a slightly older Savage left-handed 17MachII bolt gun (before the accu-trigger) already equipped with one of BSA's "Sweet-17" scopes and he claims it will punch holes in bottle caps all day long at 125 yards.

Having shot one of these in .17 M2 when the .17 was first introduced, I know they are absolutely a hoot to shoot and really accurate as well. I'm meeting this guy tonight to exchange some cash for his rifle. I'll take 'er to the range before the week is out and see what it'll do on them little black dots at 50 yards (it has a Harris bipod on it). If it does well, just for grins I'll shot the target again at 100 and post the results though the 50 yard one will be the match entry.

I have 3 .22's and soon 1 .17 plus a couple of higher powered things (Mosin 91/30 and a 98K Mauser) that I wish I had acquired back in the day when I could still see well enough to shoot open sights. Now, if it ain't got glass on it, I can't see far enough to make it useful. Don't get old if you can avoid it!

Jim, I look forward to seeing your results. My 10/17 (10/22 in .17HM2) was an absolute tack driver, but it had a few problems that made me sell it. Being a bolt gun I doubt you will have to worry about any feeding problems, but ammo inconsistency (stick to Eley for the best results...CCI is horrible) as well as cost and availability are a few that you might still have to deal with.

Anyway, .17cal. rimfires are fine, as is the .20cal. if anyone happens to have one.

:)

Just got back from the range - rifle is an older Savage Mark II (model 93 action) left hand with the 22" bull barrel in a wood stock. Barrel is free floated for the forward 2/3 of it's length. Scope is a BSA Sweet 17 Mach II with the BDC specific for the .17 Mach 2 cartridge and it's supposed to be zeroed at 100 yards. I zeroed it at 50 for the match.

I originally thought it had a Harris bipod on it, but it doesn't even have sling swivels (I'll correct that later).

Target was shot indoors at 50 yards using a Caldwell plastic front rest and a sand sock rear. Ammo was CCI (included in the deal with the rifle) so that's all I had available -- I guess it was okay as I think I managed a score of 50. One of the rounds hit pretty close to the edge of the little dot, but I can still see black all the way around the hole -- You call it from the pix but as I see it here, I did get the 5 point bonus. I'll tell ya, them little dots are dang hard to keep centered up. Good thing I stuck with decaf coffee this morning or I wouldn't have been able to keep 'em in any of the black circles, let alone the tiny ones.

Oh yeah, that rifle is an absolute dream -- gonna be my go-to rimfire now for sure, with the M69 Romanian being the backup.

Jim

Great Job
If this cold snap doesnt go away I'm out until spring:)
Low of 1 this morning with a high of 19

Brrrrrrrrr! We had a couple days last week with temps down near that and the wind was blowing 30 with gusts to 50. That was intense! Sure glad I have an indoor 100 yard range within 5 miles of my house!.

Mav, here's a picture of that Savage 17M2. Got it as you see it for 2 Franklins and it came with a brick of CCI ammo. It's a Mark II - left hand model 93 action and a 22" bull barrel. Only got one 5 round mag with it, but they ain't all that expensive and even though it's an older model, the current .22/.17M2 magazines fit. Midway has the 5 rounders in stock and the 10's are available direct from Savage for $14 apiece. I'm headed downtown to Gander Mountain right now to pick up a .17 caliber bore snake and see what their prices on magazines are. Probably get 'em cheaper from Midway even with shipping and Midway's close enough to me if I order shipped UPS ground, they get here overnight anyway as long as I get the order in before 7PM Central.

Sounds like you got a great deal...the brick alone was worth about $75.00 last I checked (which has been a few months considering that I sold that rifle). Glad you are having better luck with yours than mine (though it was a tack driver).

You'll have fun cleaning it...fortunately they have to be cleaned a lot more than .22cal. rimfires. That said my 10/17 couldn't be cleaned from the rear, so that made things a bit more challenging (no biggie, the Otis flexible cleaning kit that I used worked well and made it a great deal easier).

:)

The boresnake that I paid too much for from Gander Mountain (they were the only ones in town that had one for .17) works just fine. It's a mite tough to get started because the very fine cord on the drop weight stretches a lot, but other than that it worked great. Just sprayed a bit of Hoppe's Elite on it, pulled it through a couple time and the bore shines nicely.

It had less than 200 rounds through it from new. Guy I got it from was the original owner and he didn't shoot it much. His wife gave him a .17HMR for Christmas a couple years ago so he put it in the safe and left it there.

The bore was clean and shiny when I got it and all the metal looks new. Very well cared for considering it was a "safe queen" before I got it.

Nice shooting KSCCHTrainer. Those 17 HMRs are a lot of fun. I used to have an Excel arms rifle that shot like a house on fire, but it would never get through a whole magazine without jamming. I guess I should have gone with a bolt action.

I guess I should work on my reading comprehension. :)

Is the 17 M2 based on a .22 lr case the same way the 17 HMR is based on the 22 WMR?

I've been told it is based off of the Stinger case.... if so, it is still damned close to the 22lr...all of my .22lr's shoot Stingers just fine... it is just a hair longer than a standard 22lr case.

whatever the case may be, I certainly do like my CZ 452 in the mach II.... perhaps I will give this match a shot.

Eh, no biggie; we all miss a few details from time to time.

Yep, and it is only a hairs breadth more powerful than a .22LR because the increase in capacity is offset by the bullet having lesser mass. It does kill pretty well (only used mine for squirrels), but it tends to tear up meat pretty bad, so I relegated mine to target use (before selling it).
