New Orleans Officer in Coma Dies; Shot in The Face in 1985
Authorities say a New Orleans police officer who was in a 19-year coma after being shot in the face died yesterday.
Alva Simmons was shot while searching for a burglar March 18, 1985. He was a 12-year veteran at the time of the shooting and he died at age 53.
Captain Marlon Defillo says the shooter was arrested and sentenced to prison.
The Police Department says Simmons will receive a full police funeral service with Honor Guards.
