NY State Pistol Permit Holder List Released

I just emailed him/her this slightly rude message. If others do the same, maybe he/she will take it down, but probably not.
Hello,
You don't know me and I don't know you but I recently found your website listing the information of NYS pistol permit holders. I have to say, this is one of the worst ideas I've ever seen.

Now, I don't know what exactly you know about NYS permit applications, but the vast majority of these people don't have a permit that lets them carry their firearm with them. What this means is that when they leave the house, they have to leave their firearm. You have just provided anyone who's interested with the ADDRESSES of people with guns. Guns, especially handguns, are something highly coveted by criminals because they are one of the few things you can steal and sell for more than the item is worth.

You have basically done the same thing as a crooked locksmith or repairman who tells his gang banger friends about which houses have nice things and bad security systems. You've given criminals a list of addresses in which they will find a handgun if they break in. You have jeopardized the safety of these individuals in the event that they come home during the burglary. Since the criminals now know these people are armed, they might perpetrate a "hot burglary/home invasion" and just shoot anyone they see while inside looking for their prize.

You have also made known the addresses of women who have tried to escape abusive relationships.

Congratulations, you may have killed someone doing what you did. I hope you can sleep at night when you read that one of the people whose address you have made public was killed during a home invasion. Not to mention the people who will potentially be killed when some of these guns are stolen.

Please, do the right thing and take down this site. You can't take back what you did, but you can at lease minimize the damage you have done.

As far as I know here in Texas that info is private. Thank goodness I live in Texas. If I lived in NY (yeah right) I would look into the law and try to see if any were violated by the individual that posted the info. Then I would also find out how they got that info and write my rep. Either way that is a sucky situation.

Rm23, I'm gonna send an e-mail out to Hannity see if that will do anything. You should do the same. Or go to his twitter page.. I think he checks twitter alot.

maybe if we get enough people to e-mail these guys it will get some attention. Tell everyone you know to send out an e-mail

I'm with the guys that say get Hannity or Limbaugh on it (or O'Reilly, he's a New Yorker). This is a total violation of privacy.

To those of you not familiar with previous situations as this, see this video: CNN Piece on VCDL and Roanoke Times Exposing VA CHP Data.

If I'm not mistaken, a number of folks (and their lawyers) wrote The Roanoke Times to inform them should they ever be the victim of a crime where it was proven the criminal acted based on the information published by The Roanoke Times in said database, they could expect a lawsuit. I understand The Roanoke Times got quite a few letters and shortly thereafter pulled the database, citing possible errors in the database in order to save face (like they didn't know there were possible errors when they published it?).

Perhaps the good folks in NY should follow suit-mebbe letters to both the person/group posting, and owners of the servers etc hosting?

Someone at the other THR claims to have narrowed down the personal info of the registrar of the site.

EDIT: After The Roanoke Times fiasco, a law making CHP data public was fast-tracked. Don't recall if it passed in VA yet, but the state AG informed the VA State Police to no longer make the data available to the public. The VA State Police sez since the AG is the top lawyer for the state, they were going to follow his instructions.

Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen I believe is on the "old" system. He is from upstate New York. It does not surprise me because he is from a little town and did not leave New York I believe until his thirties....and the licenses up there are 'lifetime'.

It's not a violation of privacy, its a matter of public record. If someone wants to know if you carry all they have to do is make a phone call. All this does it make it easier for them to find out.

One guy is responsible for this. Find him and publish his information. That is what ultimately happened in VA. The responsible parties got religion quickly. Do not break the law doing it.
Joe

New York state should not have the right to disclose that information, which is what they did, they disclosed it to a private company... i'm assuming for some hefty fees... which is even more messed up

Nothing new here; just a different state. Oregon has been going through the same fight for some time now -- the details of which have been vigorously discussed on this forum previously. Here's at least one example:

I'd personally like to see a national law prohibiting the release of this information; it's not a single-state fight.
