The latest from Anti gun NY state!

Vaarok, you are correct to a point, but Genesee county has to be one of the most anti-gun yet still rural counties I have ever seen.

I lived in Monroe Co. Got my unrestricted permit in under 40 days.

My friend's lived in Genesee county. Took them over 6 months (I think it was 8) and they had target and hunting on the license.

The one and only time I bought ammo in Batavia, the guy wanted our DL, address, phone number, etc.

I think the more accurate statement is that the problem isn't New York state, it is the individual counties since they have almost complete control to rewrite the laws as they see fit (no preemption).

NY is not the worst of states, by far. If you dont like it, youre better off not living here anyway. Some of us happen to love our state as much as you love yours, so stop bashing my state. And im fairly certain the laws ctdonath are referring to only apply to unregistered guns. Registered weapons belonging to the deceased can be transferred from the executor to the inheritor by FFL.

Not quite right, Dorryn....
NYS law says that if the owner of a registered pistol dies, the executor of the estate can transfer the ownership of the pistol to the heir (through an FFL), but only has 15 days to do so. What if the Sheriff takes more than 15 days to sign off on adding the new pistol to the heir's license? Or worse yet, suppose that the heir HAS NO license, and has to wait 8 months to get one? Then the pistol has to be turned over to the cops until all the paperwork gets done. When that happens, you'll be lucky to get it back in the same condition. The cops DON'T CARE of the gun is handled or stored properly, and of it gets banged up, broken, or rusty while in their "care", well that's just tough.
One thing you're right about.... I'm better off not living in New York. I live in the wealthiest county in the US (with very low taxes compared to NY); I can buy a pistol without a permit or waiting period; I got my concealed weapons permit (unrestricted) in 21 days (and the county had no choice...they HAD to give it to me); I can own a machinegun and a silencer (and I do); and there is NO gun registration. You're DAMN right I'm better off.

I grew up in MD, not quite as bad as NY. No permit to own, but handguns must be registered. When I inherited my grandfather's guns, we took an old muzzle loader to get appraised, took the 12ga to get some work done on it, and took the .380 pistol to the range, and nowhere else. It got cleaned periodically, shot maybe once a year, and stayed at home for about 6 years. Then I moved out permanently after college and took it with me. Never attempted to register it (Thank Dad for his good judgement). If its not on the books, I refuse to ever put it on any. I've broken the law in Maryland every time I drove back, by having at least one unregistered pistol in my possession.

wow

I think you'll find Kentucky worlds better. Never lived there, but it is one of the more gun-friendly states.

Very true. Also consider Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Montana.

Why would you even register your guns in the first place?

******* bastards...

It's the politicians of leftwing nut shacks (NYC, L.A., etc) who are afraid of guns, now that the people there have been taken for a ride and becoming rightfully upset about it. Leftwing politicians don't give a damn about anyone's wellbeing except for their own. The sobbing about more gun control being the safe way to go just means safer for them, the leftwing politicians. If the leftwing politicians could tie the hands behind the backs of the American people and sink them down into the nearest lake, after having stripped them of money, they would. That would be safest that way to deal with the upset people. Hand me some leftwing news and I'm itching to unstrap my holster in response. ******* bastards...

because if you don't it's a felony. How many times must this be repeated?

Chapter and verse please?

Yama, what part of "shall not be infringed" do you not understand?!!

"shall not be infringed" has been found consistent with "handguns must be registered in NY". Unless you are ready to win a major test case, you face severe penalties should you not obey NY law as written.

The chapter is NY Penal Code sections 265 and 400. There's a lot of verses; I suggest you read them BEFORE acting on your own interpretations.

I was not referring to NY. I was referring to any 'gun-friendly state' along the lines of what I mentioned above.

I won't argue that with you donath! :)

taprackbang I don't think Yamato was saying that he agrees with it. He was just repeating the LAW. While we try and fight this law we have to abide by it until things are changed.

KY native here,we could always use a few more gun friendly folks...

And in case no one has mentioned it,you can open carry,no real need for a ccw permit, but it comes in handy.

I moved to Southern Cali with my at the time GF and couldn't stomach the place after 5 months (The place was nice and the few folks I met were okay but the gun laws got to me)

"I grew up in MD, not quite as bad as NY"

I lived 12 years in Baltimore before moving to NY state. I went to graduate school there. Although you can own a firearm in MD without a license, it is almost impossible to get a permit to carry. I've had someone break into my apartment while i was home in the city, and had more than a few robbery attempts and assaults committed against me and my friends. And I was a very muscular 220lbs when I lived there. That was a very tough city. (We heard gun shots every night, fully auto fire a few times, and helicopters would often circle the neighborhoods with search lights.)

I moved to Rochester, NY. (can still be a rough city) I have found Monroe County to be much more gun friendly than Baltimore. I received a CCW with no hassles and so have my friends. NY State is restrictive, but some counties are better than others.

My brother was shafted by the sheriffs dept, In Genesee county [someone put schizophrenia drugs in his drink at a party and he went bonkers on the way home cops got him for DUI-he suffered permanent brain damage along with the total shafting he got from NY]

I'm very sorry to hear about your brother. I hope who ever was responsible was arrested. Will his brain damage prevent him from legally owning guns? Will he be a danger to himself or others?.......

NYC is just as bad!

I had guy in my town come in to HQ with a letter from NYC PD. Since he had moved out of NYC and into NJ he didn't bother to renew his gun permit. When they went to his NYC address to arrest him they found that he had moved to NJ. They sent him a letter telling him that they would still come and arrest him if he didn't have a police officer sign off on the letter indicating that all of his firearms (listed on the letter) were now located outside the state of NY! I told him that he should tell them to get lost but he was afraid of thier Gestapo tactics so I signed it for him.

And you know why? Because the rest of the country writes us off rather than tries to help us. Thanks guys.

don't blame the rest of us. blame yourselves for electing the people in office that make the laws in your state. if you want something done about it, don't wait for the rest of the country to do your work for you. get out, get active and get people into office that are rights-friendly and not just control freaks. challenge the laws in the courts. Heller is on your side. educate the public. try to sway voters.

i understand your frustration but you have no one to blame but the voters of New York. you put 'em in office, its up to you to get 'em out.

Bobby

Vaarok, sorry if that came across like I was referring to the people...I wasn't.
When visiting my son there(upstate) I couldn't believe how absurd some of the laws were. We went to a Gander Mountain, and couldn't even handle a pistol without a state license...No offense to the well meaning folks that are trapped
in that mess...:uhoh:

I'm a little unclear on this part...What jurisdiction does a NY sheriff's dept have on a person living in another state? They wanted his NY permit returned? Doesn't that become invalid when you leave the state anyway? And if they were telling him to turn them over to the local cops......I expect I would smile as I crumpled that one up and shot hoops with it.

It's the same jurisdiction NY had when they decided to run sting straw purchases in other states, then prosecute the gun dealers. VA is one that comes to mind, I think AR is another one.

Leaving New York State 15 years ago is one of the best things I ever did.

While face to face transfers of handguns are illegal in Maryland, there is no registration. If you own a handgun in another state and move to Maryland, there's absolutely no paperwork of any kind that you have to do.

So while Maryland records all handgun sales, which is pretty much a registration scheme, you certainly don't have to be concerned about travelling through or moving to Maryland with your handguns.
