Pet Peeve: "Read Owner's Manual Before Use" printed on gun.

In today's sue-happy society, there seems to be no common sense anymore. There are labels on everything, and lots of them! Just buy a new lawn mower and look how many different warnings there are! Back in the 60's you just assumed that, if the grass is wet and you have sneakers on, you had better not slip and get your foot into the blade(s)!

When there gets to be labels and warnings everywhere we go, I think it has the opposite effect, people simply just ignore them!

If you purchase a new, really sharp knife, no kidding, the thing might actually CUT YOU! Duh, I thought that was the intent in making the knife in the first place, to CUT!

I'm waiting for the engraving in the muzzle crown that says something similar to:

"Warning Fast Pointy Stuff exits here"

I hate this stuff as well. Ruger seems to be doing more of this stuff than other makers. They must have lost too many lawsuits.

I wouldn't mind if they just put "RTFM" on the slide.....

Lol, first manufacturer that does this get's me as a customer for life.

I don't want to debate the billboard but I have seen a lot of questions asked on forums that posters would have known the answer to had they taken the time to read the manual. I believe it is really there because firearms manufacturers are trying to avoid litigation.
Yup, I take it as a more polite: "we already covered that in the manual, jack!" Of course, the irony is that the very people the statement is directed towards are also the very ones most likely to ignore it.:banghead:

My dad used to call it "satisfying the stupid."

We live in a time where people sue because they spilled their coffee on their lap and burned themselves.

You may be savvy enough to not need the manual, but the general public does. And they need a rfeminder to do so.

Just don't give anybody any money who pulls that stuff. Easy. It is quite hilarious to see the baffled look on a store clerk's face when you say you don't want to buy something because it has some stupid instruction or warning on it. There are too many sheeple in this unfortunately lawyer scared world.

One thing that angers me... is picking up a gun and seeing the [entirely ridiculous] "billboard message" that instructs you to read the owners manual before using the gun. :scrutiny:

You are buying the wrong gun.
I looked and did not see any such thing written on:
- Kel-Tec
- Kahr
- Glock
- Dan Wesson
- Les Baer
- Ed Brown

The solution to not seeing the "ridiculous" message written on the pistol is to buy the right one. :)

Strangely, none of those ^ pistols have an internal lock or magazine disconnect either. :D

Not found on the FNH products, . . . CZ products, . . . . . . . it would seem that you don't find them on foreign imports. So, your point is well taken.

One thing that makes sense is when you guy a Cowboy Action revolver from Ruger, they'll put that message on the bottom of the barrel next to the ejection rod where it isn't nearly as obtrusive as some of their DA/SA revolvers.

it would seem that you don't find them on foreign imports.

Of course not! The kind of lawsuits that try to bleed cash out of our gun manufacturers wouldn't get to first base in most of they're courts. Ignorence is not considered to be a valid reason for claiming injury.

In some countries, yes. In other countries, there are such strong consumer protection laws, writing CYA statements does nothing for the manufacturer. There's China way (everyone's on their own), US way (sue) and Europe way (regulate). None is perfect.

I do agree that engraving them on the slide is silly.

There is only time I have a problem with the warnings. I just bought a couple new Baby Eagle magazines and the manufacturer put a sticker right smack on the side of both magazines. I know I have to clean them anyway but still, just put an insert into the package and don't get all of that residue on my magazines.

Now, how many users might think it is a shaped charge requiring the concave side toward the enemy, rather than a fragmentation mine requiring the convex side toward the enemy?

Whenever someone post something about a scratch or what holster causes the least wear we get a ton of people coming out of the woodwork to remind us that a gun is a tool. Should not matter what it looks like as long as it works.

Guys guns are tools. If the markings help Ruger keep cost down and the guns affordable it is ok with me.

Some of my guns are tools, and some aren't. But in neither case do I need a reminder stamped on the barrel (or wherever) to read the manual.

I also don't need a horn or buzzer to tell me that I didn't fasten my safety belt (actually a harness)

This country wasn't built by bliss-nannies. :banghead:

My weed-wacker came with an exhaustive owner's manual, but also a "quick-start" guide---an abbreviated booklet for those who possess some measure of common sense. I'd like to see gun manuals written similarly.

Honestly I'm surprised guns don't come with an inch thick manual on how to break down every single piece.
