Pet Peeve: "Read Owner's Manual Before Use" printed on gun.

Whenever someone post something about a scratch or what holster causes the least wear we get a ton of people coming out of the woodwork to remind us that a gun is a tool. Should not matter what it looks like as long as it works.

Guys guns are tools. If the markings help Ruger keep cost down and the guns affordable it is ok with me.

And then the same people say in the same breath that Glocks have no soul. Never heard of a tool with a soul. Sounds like a setup for a horror movie.

If any of of you have one of those awful billboard Ruger revolvers in .357 you need to get rid of...

I didn't think so.

I have a number of Rugers, they're old ones.
I won't own any gun defaced with warnings stamped on it, too many other fine guns around without such stuff.

I have heard the litigation claim before. I have three guns that have warnings on them-two Rugers and one Beretta. Funny. My Rock Island, and my Kimber don't have them. If it is a concern with litigation, why wouldn't all firearms manufacturers have the warnings?

As far as ruger goes I think it is mainly because they had a big lawsuit in the past

"Contents may be hot"

on a coffee cup.

Nuff said. Crazy country liability wise.

As someone who reads the manuals for any equipment I purchase, I think these warnings are ridiculous and they do detract from the appearance of the gun. In fact, it's mind boggling to me that someone wouldn't make sure they knew how to operate a gun (if there was any doubt).

But, given the stupid things some do with firearms in general, it doesn't surprise me at all that these warnings are there.

It's not so much the lawyers that bring about the warnings, it's the juries. If juries stopped awarding huge verdicts to the idiots who shoot themselves, the lawyers would move on to greener pastures. Just imagine the mindset of the jurors in the McDonald's coffee suit. How did they get 12 people so stupid in one room?

How did they get 12 people so stupid in one room?

Um, they randomly scanned the voters roster, interviewed potential jurors, seated them, and scheduled a trial.

Do this, and you can pretty much bet most of them will come predisposed to slam the rich corporation in favor of the poor little [stupid and/or careless] victim. That's the sad state of American society.

nobody is against frivolous lawsuits as much as me but the McDonald's coffee suit was not one of them.

Woman had multiple skin grafts because Mc D's failed to act after several complains of their coffee being 50 degrees hotter than it should have been.

It was a clear case of negligence that resulted in a woman being permanently injured and the judgement did no cover her medical costs.

The example is not a good one.

Ruger is starting to do something to make their guns better to look at by moving the warning to under the barrel on some revolvers and under the dust cover like on the SR1911.

All that's left now is for Ruger to minimize their loaded chamber indicators. :D

My favorite has always been the permanently installed warning on wood stoves.
"Hot When In Use"

Too bad my cat couldn't read. Her paws are better now.

To the OP, I hate the look of the print, but I'd rather have that than have the manufacturers sued into bankruptcy.

it's an exercise in futility

because a. no one can be bothered to read novels, guns or manuals, and
b. we're guys, we watched western & cop shows, and we know what we're doing. That's why we don't have negligent discharges anymore.

Now hold my beer and watch this...

Seriously, if the words save one life it's a sacrifice I can make. What we don't like is that the words on the slide confirm what we've long suspected--the gene pool is getting shallower every day.

there is no evidence to suggest that the words do anything except give a lawyer a possible defense. And their ubiquity makes that a remote and fading possibility.

In addition I cannot agree with the "just one life" position. If everyone wore helmets in the shower or we banned swimming pools we could save lives. Being alive means that we will die. I think a reasonable trade.

I spoke with my attorney yesterday and he suggested I tattoo a warning label on my dog to protect me from lawsuits.

"warning this animal can cause harm, up to and including death. Please avoid" will soon be added to ole Sugar. Anybody know a tatoo artist that is good with animals?

Unfortunately tue in some instances, but those that won't take the time to read the manual probably won't pay any attention to what stamped on the barrel (or wherever) either.

So far as "saving one life" is concerned, the world is suffering from over population now as it is, and I see no reason to make the situation worse.

The real issue is safe storage, and they're better ways to address that then internal locks which very, very few gun owners use. If absolute safety is the goal, guns should come with barrels and cylinders that don't have chambers and are plugged at the back. This method is fool proof and inexpensive too. :uhoh:

Certainly the effects of Darwinism are much needed these days.
