question about carrying

the city that never sleeps (actually about an hour
for those of you who carry and conceal, what reason do you feel the need to carry a pistol, and where do you travel to where u feel as if you may need one? i'm just trying to figure out why people outside of lets just say the inner cities for instance would feel the need to carry a pistol with them.
 
Because assaults happen outside the inner city.

Because car-jacking happens outside the inner city.

Because we walk through parking lots late at night when few others are around.

Because home-invasions are up substantially.

Because I'm getting older and running away isn't as much of an option as it was when I was younger.

Because I want to.

Because I can.
 
very good points. and i know problems occur outside the inner city, i was just using it as an example. now i'm assuming most people do not know you carry, so them thinking differently of you bc u carry do not exist.
I guess what i'm trying to say is you don't feel as if you're labeled anything bc you carry.
 
Because anything can happen anywhere. I had decided to get a firearms license before then but a couple of years ago right at Christmas time I read about a guy shooting up a mall out West with an SKS. I used to believe that being aware I could avoid trouble before it started. Now I have small children which makes me much less mobile. If anything were to happen to them I could have prevented.......
 
Why would you want seat belts in your car? Inner cities don't have a corner on violent and heinous crimes. Rural areas in fact probably have greater response times that cities anyway.
In the country it is not uncommon to have people come onto your property for directions, solicitations, or who knows what day and night. It might be a different mindset than in the city but it requires awareness and preparation none the least.
Small towns are the same, some look at them as easy marks because many don't have the sophisticated security and law enforcement as bigger town and cities.
 
Why wouldn't you want to carry? It is our God given right to protect ourselves and others no matter where that may be. How do you know where the bad guys will be?
 
Last fall we had a rabid skunk at the intersection of 14 and 5 highways. 4 miles from my front door.

shortly there after a rabid racoon was found 200 yards from my barn (where I keep two horses).

I carry 24/7...I live in a rural setting.

Add this reason to rboatright's list.
 
For the same reason I have other emergency supplies around.
I have a full first aid kit in the house, a smaller one in the car, and some bare essentials in my wallet.
I have a full size fire extinguisher in the house and a smaller one in the car. I have a rifle and shotgun at home and carry a handgun.

I also have sought out and taken training in each because a tool is only as good as the person trained to use it.

Do I hope to use any of them? Nope. Do I expect to use any of them? I have, but not all of them. I've never needed a gun while away from home, but I carry one and know how to use it just in case.

If I need them and don't have them with me or the knowledge to use them, what am I supposed to do when random chance presents me with such a problem?

i am always covered with medical, life, and auto insurance, and i am always covered with defense insurance the same. it is a fact that bad things happen to good people, and that isn't just in the unsafe parts of town, as a matter of fact I would venture to say that you are most vulnerable in your home town, where you might let your guard down, because you think and feel that you are safe. if i won't go somewhere without a gun, i won't go there with a gun either.

What would someone label a person for carrying, if they somehow knew?
 
I've used my CCW to stop violent crimes on three separate occasions when I lived in states that did not deprive me of my right to carry.

Now that I live in CA the best I can do is call 911 and hope there's a donut shop nearby... :rolleyes:
 
I carry around home, due to robberies, and the bears that wander through my yard to get to the river full of salmon.

I normally vacation down in the Lower 48 to states that honor my ACHP. Right now, that is 34 states.
 
You are typically surprised where you didn't expect something to happen. If I knew when and where a criminal or mad dog or rabid raccoon would appear, I would avoid that encounter. Since my ESP has been unreliable, I choose to go armed.
 
It happens

I live in a 3 BR Ranch style home. Adjacent to the kitchen is a sliding door wall that leads to a deck on the back of the house, it's in a development but it's a rural area and our home backs up to a well used road and it's very dark at night.

Last summer, about 9:30 PM I was sitting in the family room watching the boob tube when out of the corner of my eye I saw some movement at the door wall that was open with a screen door unlocked. I thought, "oh crap", my gun is in the bedroom. Then I heard this weak little voice say "Sir..Sir" so reluctantly I got up & went to the door and as I got there I saw this little teen aged girl holding a clip board. She was looking for signatures on a petition. As my adrenaline level stopped rising I gave her a lecture that lasted a good 3-4 minutes. I think it made an impression on her, at least I hope I did. I know that I probably should have gone for my gun but my wife was in the same room as I and I wouldn't do that to her.

When I got back to my Lazy-Boy I re-ran the event in my head. First I have to tell you that just weeks before this event I had considered putting my little .380 in the fold of my chair (we've been empty nesters for 15 years) just in case of something like this happened but then I kinda forgot about it. So you can imagine how I felt when I realized that if that gun was where I thought of putting it that little girl could have been in real trouble.

As I have always told my wife , I can't tolerate stupidity. Who are these people that think it's OK to approach a home in the darkest possible conditions and just stand on a back porch and mumble & move around in the dark like a criminal. That event has never left my memory and probably never will, but it demonstrated to me how accidents of the lethal nature happen.
 
We who carry have made a decision that we are responsible for our own safety. We carry because police are too big to fit in our pockets. They won't follow us everywhere we go. And ultimately, they are not legally responsible to act to defend us as individuals anyway. Less-populated areas are not free of bad people and events, and when you are away from populated areas, it is even harder for a cop to respond.

The truth is, police are very ineffective at preventing crime at all. Police are REACTIVE, not PROactive. They are constitutionally prevented from acting to prevent crimes they THINK will happen. When something bad happens, the police will take minutes to respond. The problem is, when your life is in danger, minutes is way too long. You have SECONDS to react.

We don't carry where it's dangerous. We carry everywhere it isx legally allowed, because we have absolutely no idea where bad things will occur. If we had an idea where and when bad things would happen, we wouldn't just take a gun, WE WOULD AVOID GOING THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. And if it were unavoidable, I would take a rifle, not a handgun.
 
Because making absolute sure that I'm able to come home each day to take care of my wife and kids as well as myself is my #1 priority. I live in one of the lowest crime areas of my state, but that doesn't make me immune to bad people doing bad things. 1 hour after leaving a Wal-Mart last month, 2 people died from a disturbed girlfriend who found out her boyfriend actually had a wife. One was an innocent bystander, the other was the husband/boyfriend. This Wal-Mart is also in one of the best parts of the city. Crisis doesn't make an appointment, just like it was mentioned above. I have a fire extinguishers and smoke detectors, I have seatbelts and airbags, and I hope I never need those either. But if I need them, I want them on/beside me.
 
Because I'm not going to rely on ANYONE else to esure the safety of my home, my girlfriend, my family, or me when it's needed most. Nuff' said.
