Uh, Nomad...
From Cooper's Commentaries, March, 1997:
"The scoutscope doth not a scout rifle make."
"The scoutscope is indeed handy on a scout rifle, but the scout rifle is a conglomeration of characteristics of which its sighting system is just one. The principle virtues of the scout are compactness, light weight and handiness."
Now, I never had the pleasure to meet Mr. Cooper, but this seems to be a point on which, in his writings at least, he didn't give ground.
I personally have a postwar manufactured K98k, original barrel cut and recrowned at 20", with a XS Sights scout mount on it. I've mounted a Burris 2.75x scope on it but I still need to have the XS ghostring sights added to it. However, due to the fact that it's too heavy, the wrong caliber, and over length, I will not call it a scout. It might be deserving of the appellation "pseudo-scout" but even that, I think, could be questionable.
And suddenly I remember this is a picture thread and I don't have a camera. Sorry 'bout that.
Now, all that said, I find it a handy rifle in my short time with it and look forward to taking it on a hog hunt in Texas sometime this year. And I believe that it will perform admirably for just about any circumstances I could realistically find myself. But it's still not a scout.
