Went out yesterday morning and did the shoot. What a gorgeous day in SE Texas! Used two rifles - a Browning BL22 and a 1963-era Winchester 250 that I inherited from my Dad, both shooting Winchester X-pert .22LR. My Browning must be zeroed for 100 yards, because I had the front bead buried in the rear leaf with a 6'0 clock hold and coulnd't get consistent groups. Switched to Dad's 250 and shot well for open sights...well, for me it was good shooting at least.

For kicks, I had made some 3x5 squares on paper. Went and hung them out after a couple pages of cloverleafs. Used the Browning again. First 3x5, I was trying to cut a fine sight - and the target looked like a shotgun was being used. Second 3x5, I said, "nuts with this," and did a point-shoot style of shooting. Wouldn't you know - I had about a 1 1/2 group going. The guy to my left was shooting his ubersoopershooter Magnum. I was trying to time my shots between his, but somehow I misoverunderestimated his trigger time and he shot the split second before I did...and I jumped and jerked the trigger...BINGO - a 5" flyer. Maybe I can win the "biggest flyer" category.

Mailed my pages in yesterday. Thanks!

Well, my 39 is still shooting crooked...

I'm going to ignore the shamrock shoot this weekend and take my AR15 to the range.

I gotta get my EOTECH back in zero in case the Zombies invade.

... in case the Zombies invade.
Well, I won't speak for others,
but I've taken far more Zombies
with .22 LR than any other caliber. :scrutiny:

Curiously, all were wearing t'shirts
w/ 5 spots on them.

Fry 'em up w/ garlic, onions,
potatoes, gravy, beans and greens,
and they taste like ... chicken.

Arrrggghhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

St. Patricks day and I had every intention of shooting. My gear and rifle are still out in the truck. Even got half way out to the range before I gave it up. Wind is non stop and blowing hard. Has been since last night. My only day off this week. :banghead:

Now it's 2:00 pm and if anything it's worse. I can be out there in about fifteen minutes so there's hope, just not much. Rats.

Update, shout outs and inspiration

The entries continue to arrive. ShakyJake and Quoheleth's (the FIRST official non-Marlin entry recieved) came today.

So far only one official entry in the Magnified class. Shaky Jake has the bar set pretty high for average group size and smallest group. A flier left the door open for the closest to center category on an otherwise stellar center target group.

As for the rest of us Non-Magnifed shooters Angus is leading in the Smallest and Average Categories and MalH has the closest to center lead with his provisional target (another "better" target inbound at this time).

Yet to get targets from past winners DJR and JohnMcl and we've all read about Fast Frank's trials and tribulations with trying to get his Marlin Scoped.

Keep em' coming,

I went to the range today.

No model 39 this time, but that's OK. The wind was gusting pretty bad.

The AR15 is always a joy to shoot, and today was no exception.

That rock I was hitting with the 39 is now small chunks of gravel.:D

If I see any vampires cruising around, I've got it covered.

Now... What to do with my 39?

MalH's your second target arrived. I will use that one unless you get a chance to shoot another even better target... ;) :p Nice shootin!

Just a few more weeks left pards. Keep shootin'

Mo,

Next Wednesday is my day! We've been having poor shooting weather here in the Republic of Northern Virginia recently. Mostly the problem is the wind.

The weather charts show Wednesday as the day. I'm ready.

Frank, I'm sorry you're fighting the crooked shooting. You are convinced it is all in the scope mounts? That is, you can shoot relatively straight with the iron sights?

Mo, thanks again for standing this up. I suggest we do the barricade shoot next.

John-

Yes, I'm sure that it's all about the Bsquare mount.

I've tried all sorts of adjustments and combinations, and nothing has changed the fact that the rifle shoots eight inches to the right ever since I put the Bsquare mount on.

I've taken it off and re- mounted it, too.

So I took my EOTECH and put it on the rifle. The EOTECH required about three turns of the adjuster to zero.

That's a lot of adjustment. More than the scope offers.

Another thing, when I center the crosshairs in the scope (Looking through the scope and rotating it) it's way to the right.

When I adjust the scope to hit on target (As far left as it will go) the crosshairs are WAY off center when I rotate the scope.

When I put the EOTECH back on the AR15 after being on the 39, it was hitting 8 inches to the left at 25 yards...

It's the mount.

While re-zeroing the AR, I started with the BUIS (Back Up Iron Sights) because it had never been zeroed at 200 yards before.

When I was satisfied that the irons were set correctly, I re installed the EOTECH and proceeded to get it zeroed for 200 yards, too.

And I noticed something. The AR shot better groups with the irons than it did with the EOTECH.

Apparently, good iron sights are better than the one MOA dot in the holosight.

I think I'm going to just yank everything off the top of the rifle and shoot a target with the irons to see what happens.

I'm betting I can beat the EOTECH target I already turned in.

After that, I will probably re-install the Marlin mount until I decide what to do. It was funny looking, but it worked just fine.

I'm not out yet!:D

If you do reinstall the Marlin mount it might be worth the time and effort to test it first with the conventional two ring setup, then add the third ring. Not just a few shots but maybe a box (same stuff, same lot #) in each configuration. Three or five shot groups. Satisfy yourself that X is significantly superior to Y.

Just thinking what I'd do.

Based on the evidence that Frank presented above,
I have to agree: problem seems to be the mount.

"Your Honor, we implore you:
the preponderance of evidence suggests ..."

(Luck of the draw? Large standard deviation?
Bought one from the edge of quality control?
Screw holes drilled not to spec?)

I have Magnifed entries from Angus and KSYodeldog (Marlin 39 and Winchester 150).

Angus based on the lower left bullseyes on the two targets you have submitted I would keep rotating the target and shoot the lower left every time. Stellar groups man! MalH's lower left was his best group too!

SKYodeldog: Thanks for joining in and adding another Winchester into the mix! What scope and ammo did you use?

on my 39 the scope is a 3x9 simmons -on the model 150 a very old westernfield 4x-cci mini mag in both . i bet you could tell the wind was kickin!!!! but it was fun thanks!!!!

I just can't get a break.

As I've mentioned in various places, I haven't had a chance to shoot my 5 spot yet because I've been so busy at work, no days off in longer than I want to remind myself about.

But, I'd scheduled next week as a break, not really time "off", but time out of my normal routine to get some projects tied up, get ready for the next phase of other projects, done, some work around the house, take a couple of days off to visit some friends (in another town, next weekend) AND get out to the range to shoot a few five spots with the 39A on either Tuesday or Wednesday, my normal range days. (I like weekdays at the range; far less of a madhouse ... ).

Well, I opened the newsletter for the range this morning. Due to budget cuts and poor fee collections, they're no longer open on weekdays, only 10 - 4 on Fri, Sat & Sunday, which is, of course, when I'll be out of town next week. Of course, I'm busy today, and tomorrow significant rain is forecast.

Sometimes, ya just can't get a break.

:banghead:

Well, good news. On closer reading of the newsletter this morning, it seems that the range is only closed on weekdays to the "public" (i.e., non-members). The range is open to members (which I am).

[I'm thinking I may volunteer as a newsletter editor. That policy could have been stated a LOT more clearly than it was. :scrutiny: ]

So, if the weather holds and my workload lightens, I've still got a chance to get out there mid week and shoot some shamrocks.

I agree, Mo.

However, for me right now, a [strike]new[/strike] business owner who is struggling in a folding economy, my priority has to be paying rent (due in ten days, and still not together) and a few other work related issues I'd hoped would be resolved by now.

If I can make progress on that by Tuesday, I'll go. (No option for Wednesday, and may be leaving town on business Thr - Sun).

{Added by edit}

OK, so the bidness is not really "new" anymore. It's gotten older (I've been at this for seven years, even though I just overhauled it in a big way late last year), but I still haven't seemed to quite find the marketing shamrock necessary to make it float financially successfully beyond just breaking even. (Case in point: if it was already stable, I wouldn't be at work tonight.)

Still, for a biology teacher branching out on his own with [strike]little[/strike] no :uhoh: previous business experience, even breaking even can be viewed as a success. At least I'm still afloat, even if constantly bailing water.

Still, a day at the range this week could help adjust my attitude. I'm going to try really hard to make that happen, and it looks like the weather could cooperate ... not great, but passable.

Hey, is there any handicap for "shooting shamrocks in the rain?" :D }
