Risk & Reward Rimfire Match:

My wife is the "plinking" type. She likes to bust up bowling pins, gallon water jugs (full, of course) and other reactive targets. If I didn't shoot mainly at the indoor range, I'd invest in a few pounds of Tannerite, that's for sure. The only problem with Tannerite though, it usually destroys the target frames at the same time it goes BOOM! She doesn't like shooting indoors because she has to shoot at paper and for her, that's no fun!

I went to the range a week ago yesterday but as I was leaving I broke my glasses. It was pretty tough seeing the top of the target. I'll try again next week. I think I'll take out the J. C. Higgins, .22, the Winchester Model 43 in 218 Bee and Remington Police Sniper. I ought to hit something with my regular glasses.
Sorry for your misfortune. Hopefully the new eyes will afford a noticeable improvement.

Well between this match and the centerfire match, my shooting fun has at least tripled if not quadrupled!
Happy to hear it. Hope your new thunderstick is a shooter (I'd be surprised if it wasn't).

Heck, get the daughter involved in these matches. Maybe she'd give the rest of us a run for our money!
+1; family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and folks you just met are all welcome. See if you can get them to join THR, but even if they aren't willing we'll accept their submissions.

Guy I bought it from claims it's a "tack driver". He replaced it with a Browning "A-Bolt" also in .223 with the hopes that it would shoot as good but be lighter. I didn't tell him, but I'm thinking he's going to be disappointed in that Browning. First 3 rounds will be fine, but when that slender barrel heats up, the POI changes quickly on all the Brownings I've shot. Main thing I'm really glad about is the Savage is chambered to handle the 5.56 NATO as well as the civilian .223 Remmy rounds and the barrel twist is 1 in 9 so I'll be able to load up some 77 grain Sierra Match King's for some serious 100-200 yard accuracy. I'll certainly give it an outing in the Centerfire matches.

I've got a really good .223 load using Hodgdon's Varget and the Sierra boolits. It shot sub MOA out of a 24" Rock River Varminter AR I used to have. Hopefully the Savage will like the same load or at least require only minor tweaking of cartridge over all length as I have a bunch of them left over from the AR days.

Yep, I own and like Brownings, and consider the A-Bolt (not the X-Bolt) to be one of best bolt rifles out there, but I don't think it will match a recent model Savage, unless of course you send it off to someone like Christensen and have them tune it up and add a CF bbl (then you can have the best of both worlds...but it'll cost ya).

Well, UPS' Tuesday delivery of my new (to me anyway) .223 Savage bolt gun has been moved forward to TODAY! Just checked UPS' website with the tracking number and I see that it has arrived in Great Bend, KS and is on the truck for delivery today.

When I talked with my FFL guy on the phone last night, he said it was okay to come today and pick it up, but he said even though the UPS website said they were going to deliver a day early, unless it showed "Out For Delivery" this morning, it wouldn't happen. Well, it shows "Out For Delivery" and "On the truck for delivery today" on UPS' website so the 65 mile trip is ON!

FFL Guy has a nice range (out to 300 yards) on his property, so I'm taking the scope, tools and laser boresighter plus 100 rounds of ammo along with me. UPS delivery time at his place is usually between 3 and 4 p.m. so I'll try to get-r-sighted in and then if there's time left before it gets dark, will try this month's target to see what it'll do. I'll post the results over on the Centerfire match page.

I'm taking enough targets along and will try and get my FFL guy to shoot the rimfire one with his Kimber .22WMR. If we get time to do that, I'll post the target here for him - That way maybe I can get him involved in these matches too. He's a big-time NRA instructor and youth hunter safety instructor here in KS and we team-teach the KS concealed carry course.

Cool beans, Jim. Look forward to hearing how she does. I appreciate your efforts to encourage other folks to participate too. xyxthumbs.gif

Got it home. Had to wait until I got back to put the scope on it as I took the wrong allen wrenches with me. Millett windage adjustable rings are standard, not metric and I grabbed the metric set so we didn't get to sight it in, merely bang off a couple of proofing 5.56 NATO rounds. It has been re-chambered with a Wylde reamer so will take both the 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington ammo. No anomalies in either 5.56 or .223 cases so it's good to go. Glad of that because I have over a thousand rounds of M193 5.56 NATO ammo on hand.

It's in good shape, no scratches or dings I can find and the trigger breaks at 3 pounds which is good for a non-accutrigger Savage rifle. I'll probably invest in a Rifle Basics aftermarket trigger for it though as the stock trigger has just a bit too much creep to suit me. It's heavy enough though and the barrel turns out to be 24" rather than 20" as he told me. It has a 1 in 9 twist so will work well with everything from 55 grain up to the 77 grain match king bullets with the 62 grainers being about optimum from what I've read.

Have some ham radio equipment arriving tomorrow by UPS (signature required) so won't get to the range until Wednesday to sight it in.
Here's a quick picture I snapped just after I got the Sightmark 8.5-25 X 50 scope mounted and laser bore sighted.

Lookin' good, Wally.

Sorry if I am a few days late on wrapping up/updating the leaderboard for this match and starting the next one. Lightning ran in on my house and killed my network (amongst other things). I still have quite a bit to sort out, then purchase new equipment, so I don't know how long it will take (depends upon the source, likely NewEgg and/or my ISP). Hoping to be back up and running by the weekend, but that's a tight schedule so we'll have to see how things go. As of right now I am using a friend's network and have limited access at work, so I can't do too much ATM. Sorry, guys.

:)

Crap - I totally forgot to do this this month! And I just went shooting today, too...

Looks like you guys had a great month! Congrats!

Right there with you guys...been too busy getting internet, et al. restored. I should blame it on the deceased laserjet, but truth is I have a inkjet that still works fine and a stack of targets already printed. Hopefully next month goes a bit better for ll of us.

Here's an long-overdue update to the leaderboard:

BTW, forgive me if I am a bit late with the final score tally and new match tomorrow, net is back up, but I still have quite a bit of catching up to do.

:)
