Great shooting, KSC',
Those Savage 17HMR's are impressive.
(Those 'stock' Rugers are nice too!)

I took the old Anshutz 54 to the range last night, just before dark.
Getting 5 rounds above the 19 line is not going to be easy!

Tried some Federal GMM (922A), that I've had on the shelf for awhile.
Magnified Target div.
100 yards,, 15X
Bench w/ sandbags
Very little wind,
Of the six targets I shot, these are two of the better ones.
My best score was a 90, if I understand the scoring correctly.

Hey Mav, what brand is that sling? Where did you get it? I need to get at least one just like it.
That's a SuperSling-2 made by the Outdoor Connection. I have a bunch of 'em...there's one on most of my rifles (leather ones on the others). You can typically pick them up at WW, but various other retailers sell them too (including but not limited to MidwayUSA, Natchez, OpticsPlanet, Dick's, Gander Mtn.). It is 1.25in. wide, if you want a 1in. sling get the SuperSling, and if you want padding the Plus version is the one for you. Tey come in various colors (I've seen and/or own ones in Black, OD Green, Forest Green, Coyote, & various camo patterns). They are kind of a pain to take apart (just pay close attention how it goes back together and you'll be okay), but you can swap the swivels if need be, and sometimes save a little by getting the version that doesn't include swivels (I know Midway sells 'em this way).

Good job coloring between the lines, Caddisflied.

:)

I too prefer the metal ones, but I have still yet to have one (of any type or width) break on me...can't say the same for other knock-off slings. The only fault I can find is that they are fairly slick (nylon) so they like to slide a bit; not a big issue for me (I like to have the rifle easily accessible anyway), but others might find it to be a problem.

Just remembered, I lied earlier...one rifle has a non-leather sling other than a SuperSling, my USGI M1-Carbine has it's original cotton sling (not because it's actually better, but to maintain the historical authenticity/correctness of the rifle). The others have a SuperSling of some form or wear leather.

:)

You guys are talking this sling up pretty highly. How does it compare to a GI web sling? Or a Turner second?

I put a Supersling on my 795. Bought it the same day as the gun. Had never used one before but i really like it adjusts real easy. Cost about $8 I think.

It's pretty darn good, far better than any GI web sling IMO and just as good as a leather Turner (I don't like the Turner Biothane slings) or similar, but aesthetics aren't quite as good. The look, feel, and, as weird as this may sound, smell of leather is something no synthetic can ever match, but the SuperSling is just as good functionally.

You may have just earned them a purchase...I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive sling (as in not $60) just to use for prone and sitting positions.

Thanks; despite the polymer ring being perfectly secure thus far, I wouldn't mind adding one to one of my rifles just for the added strength (or piece of mind).

:)

I've seen those kits, usually branded Winchester, but they look exactly the same, at Walmart lately. I've bought several of them and they move pretty well. I haven't had a problem with them scratching or dinging the stocks, but that does remain to be seen. They weren't very expensive either. I don't think I paid more than $7.95 a set for any of them.

I'll play

Shot this laying in my yard.
Ruger 77-22 varmint with a 3-9 Simmons scope.
Winchester bulk hp. Thats the only ammo I had on hand.
The gun will do better than this with good ammo.
But no time to go to the store, so this is what I get.
BDang new trifocals.
3x19. 1x 18, 1-17 that dosnt count gives me 75 points.
I may have to get some good ammo and try again.
Now if I could get this pic posted I could play.

Same ones, seems that the Winchester name goes pretty cheap these days as they seem to put the branding on everything (which is in no way saying they are bad rifles, that's just foolishness).

They still use the steel "Talon" swivels on some, it just depends upon the model. I have a stack of 'em from removing them from SuperSlings for use with proprietary swivels and the like (just make sure to pay close attention to how it is woven in and out of the D-ring and swivels as it is more complex than it appears).

ChopperKen, here's a good tutorial on posting photos. Hope this helps.

:)

Well I put together a single shot .22 and bought a sling from Wal Mart so I'm ready to print out some targets and hit the range. My rifle is a JC Higgins Model 103 lol.

Here is my tack driver:

I'm still a little fuzzy on scoring but I will review the previous posts. One question, the range I use has a continuous bench so I'm stuck with standing or can I shoot from a sitting position as long as I don't touch the bench?

Welcome, CAR-AR; any position is fine for either sporting or target class. If you choose to use a rest, that's acceptable too, but that automatically bumps you up to target class. BTW, that is a fine little plinker you have there; the model should be a 103.18 not just 103 (which, IIRC, simply indicates that Marlin made it for Sears). If memory serves me it is the same as a Marlin M-100, which despite not being super rare or particularly sought after/valuable is a good, solid rifle, and makes for an excellent trainer for young folks. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it shot very nicely, particularly if it is equipped with micro-groove rifling (like the famous, or infamous if you own a 10/22, Marlin M-60).

:)

Maverick223,

You are correct on the model number, thanks for decoding the model number. I got the rifle on a inheritance since no one else wanted it. I brought it to the range (on the 100 yard) and it seemed to have more accuracy than I had that day. I planned to come back with a spotting scope to see what I could get out of it so I'll get to the range this week and see what I can do on the 50 yard range.

By the way I do have a 10/22, one of my fun guns.

FWIW if you can look down the bore and see if it has ballard or micro-groove rifling that will tell you the relative age (if you don't already know). If it has the former it dates prior to the early fifties (Marlin 100 production started in the late 30s IIRC). I believe the J.C. Higgins copies were produced in later years, so my bet is micro-groove, which would narrow the date a fair bit (pre-60 or thereabouts). IMO it makes a heck of a lot better trainer than does a Crickett or the like (which are fine, but your example will still be around long after the Cricketts have played their last note ;)).

Here is my best target so far for the rimfire match.

Rifle was a S&W M&P 15-22 with primary arms red dot.
50 Yards
Ammo was CCI Target standard velocity.
Unmagnified/Sporting Class

Score is 75 points

Thanks Mav, I hope to punch a few more holes in some targets later this month.

I also discovered there is an obscene amount of parallax error in the primary arms red dot so I really have to get my head in the same spot every time or the groups will be off by about a 2 inch vertical shift. Dare I say these things might be why an Aimpoint costs so much?

Looks like you were trying to sneak up on that "20" like I did. Dang, I like this target. I really like the title of the match "Risk & Rewards".

Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you - :p

Mav, these doggone matches have cost me a TON of money (all for the better too) trying to upgrade my shooters and shooting. Wish I had had something like this as a kid (60+ years ago), there would be a lot less "tree rats" and rabbits in this world because I wouldn't have missed so many trying to eradicate them back then -

Glad to hear it. That is, after all, why I'm here...to separate bullet from gun and inevitably dollar from shooter. :p

...but don't feel bad, it's had the same effect on me. I doubt that I would have bought the 93R17-TR (and 6.5-20x Nikon Monarch to put on it) if it wasn't for the match (still need to find a spot to pop a few Groundhogs to put that booger to work). It's funny how much a match with printed targets and rimfire ammo can cost. [shrugs]

:)

Maverick223,

I went to the range a week ago yesterday but as I was leaving I broke my glasses. I decided to use an old contacts and headed out. It was pretty tough seeing the top of the target. I'll try again next week. I think I'll take out the J. C. Higgins, .22, the Winchester Model 43 in 218 Bee and Remington Police Sniper. I ought to hit something with my regular glasses.

Well between this match and the centerfire match, my shooting fun has at least tripled if not quadrupled!

Anxiously awaiting the arrival (Tuesday) of a Savage 10FLP-LE1 in .223 with a 20" heavy barrel that I picked up for $400 off a guy in Rotterdam, NY (through the Predator Masters forum). Tracking # shows delivery to my FFL guy on Tuesday and he says they arrive between 3 and 4 p.m. usually. He has a range, so I'm taking the scope and a few tools along, plus some ammo. Might just be able to have some fun and git-r-sighted-in at the same time. Wifey's already got the kit packed up for the .308 so I gotta watch her closely or I won't have a .308 anymore. She don't wanna shoot the .223 cuz it don't kick enough. Hey, just thought of something. That .308 has a heck of a muzzle brake on it and it don't kick any more than the .223 so I may have a chance to keep it after all. Wife's idea of a RIFLE is a 30-06 or heavier. (She likes .458 Win Mag's cuz they go BOOM and thump your shoulder pretty good).:neener:
