Show me your dangerous game rifles

I happen to be reading Selous's book about Elephant hunting in Africa. His first pair of rifles were 4 bore black powder rifles. Once his gun barrier accidently double loaded his backup 4 bore. The shot not only knocked him down but also damaged his shoulder and cheek. Bad enough with a normal load.

The most dangerous Rifle I now have is a matter of opinion . Heaviest caliber other than 12 gauge ,would be the .338 Lappy Mag I suppose . Also Have a Winchester .338 Mag. Both with Zeiss Glass ,so I can definitely see the danger a ways off .

Others would argue the Black Rife and it's copious amount of ammo . Truth be told I've killed more things hunting by far with a 7 Rem Mag .
I only used a .375 H&H when I was forced too .

That’s pretty darn good with a 2.5 power scope!

Well that makes me feel better about it. I know it's not true, but sometimes I feel like everyone but me is shooting sub moa with every rifle they own.

This is a target I kept for reference from my initial sight-in and ammunition comparisons with a few different loads. It's the BB 270gr mono solid.

My first two groups with the "cheaper" Hornady ammo were far less impressive. Though they got better as I got used to the rifle a little more.

The reticle makes things challenging because the crosshairs are 1 moa thick (actually 1.4 moa, now that I've checked), and obscure quite a lot of the target at that range. But shooting small groups at 200 yards isn't what the scope was really designed for I suppose. And it seems preferable that the reticle be highly visible at "dangerous" ranges.

I certainly enjoy shooting it. :D

I picked up the CZ 550 Safari Classic while late-night Gunbroker browsing about five years ago. The price was too good to pass up. Getting the .375 H&H prompted me to begin reloading more than just with a Lee hammer kit.

I don't hunt, but one never knows when a threatening rhinoceros or elephant might walk by!

Here was the first trip to the range with it. The water jug at 50 yards exploded, and so did the jug beside it. Water jug threat neutralized.

One thing that helps with low power optic at longer range. Aim to the left or right of center so you can just see the orange lines of the target off the side of your scope crosshairs. That helped me tighten up my groups at 200 yards using a 2.5 power scope.

It's not that I didn't like his work/books, it's just he had a VERY hard time with the truth!

He just wrote whatever he thought would sell and the truth be dammed!

It’s called fiction. Most novels are fiction. Want reality read an encyclopedia.

Even true accounts are so far outside the realm if my experience they might as well be fiction to me lol.
Well, if someone is writing about putting on a football helmet to hunt jaguar, you might want to consider carefully how much you believe...

Eets too keep em from choowin on ye noogin!

There was vhs video of somebody hunting an elephant short of the big five with a compound bow some number of years ago....even with the forest of big rifles behind the guy, that seemed like a hard "Nope!" to me.......

I agree that Capstick is best regarded as fiction. His books are an enjoyable read. I ended up with several leatherbound editions. Kambaku is also excellent, written by a market ivory hunter of the `60's, if I remember right.

If you wanna watch it in HD, I highly recommend "Giants in the Jesse". A few years ago I splurged on the whole Mark Sullivan collection too. I spent a good half hour on the phone with Mark, he's an interesting dude.
