I'm sort of looking at a 22lr semi-auto pistol. My son and I shot one last weekend, however this one was basically used up. Not one shot went unchecked by: F/l. F/Fr, F/eject. Wow this was a horrible example for a gun some one might br interested in. My question is this, " is this typical of a Mosquito's performance or did I just get a bad gun to rent from the range? The other 22 semi-auto pistol I'm looking at is the "American Tactical Imports ATI 1911 22LR". Looking for advice on these particular semi-automatics pistols. Thank you for any help offered.

My Mosquito ran like a champ, but wasn't as accurate as I had expected. Might have just been the ammo, as .22's can be picky, but I traded it in on a Trailside and it is superb.

It would be hard to go wrong with a Ruger Mark I/II/III, a Browning Buckmark, or a Sig Trailside. Impossible actually. All great guns. I would put the Ruger or the Browning above both guns you mentioned, and both are plentiful and nicely priced. The S&W Model 41 is no slouch either, but much pricier.

I have no experience with the ATI pistol.

I just picked one up a couple of months back to get my wife ready to take a ccw class and to have something affordable to shoot. I would put it at 95% reliable. To get that reliability you need to run CCI mini mags through it and clean and lube it after each use. It is not a target pistol but it is hard to beat as a training aid. That said, at 20 yards I can shoot 3" groups. For defensive handgun training I feel that is quite adequate. Also the mosquito is really light, unlike the ATI, which causes recoil to be a little more, which I like for training. The ATI is almost 2 lbs. All that said I have yet to here a negative report on the ATI. The worst reports I have read have been that the owners were simply indifferent. But to answer your question, yes I think you got a bad example and the mosquito is a good little gun. Also my dad has had his for about 5-6 months and his is just as reliable.

I have had my mosquito for over four years. It runs well with CCI Minimags ( nearly 100%) it also likes Federal Automatch, and Federal red box bulk packs. It runs horribly on ANY Remington or Winchester ammo. Just keep it well lubed and feed it what it likes and it will run well

I must be lucky, runs without issue. There is some spring/ bushing ?? that helps with some issues. Never had one, it is my only 22 pistol. I like it as I can start new shooters on it then move them up to my sig 220.

I have two of them and I would say they are sufficient for a range toy. Right around the 200 round mark I start to have trouble with them but all I have to do is clean them and they are ready to go again. I shoot federal bulk through mine without much issue. CCI Mini Mags are by far the best ammo I have shot through mine. If you want absolute reliability, don't buy one. If you are looking for a cheap range toy, the mosquito is good for that.

I would say that if I had it to do all over again, I would buy the conversion kit for my 226.

I have two neighbors that have bought them. Both returned them within a couple of hundred rounds. Both had failure to "everything". Good lookin gun but from what I have seen and read I wouldn't buy one.

They are designed for high velocity ammo.

I was frustrated when I first got mine until I read the directions. The negative feedback about the gun is mostly due to this reason.

The more you shoot the high velocity ammo the more it will get broke in for the cheaper walmart crap. They are about the best fitting .22 handguns out there; I have not held one that feels closer to a 9mm.

They are not as accurate as the .22 autos with the bull barrels, but that is expected, and the mounting rail is nice for a light or laser. I'm thinking about getting an led tactical light, just for fun.:) This is my sig and the card that came with it. Notice that it says CCI mini-mag (this is high-velocity ammo). I hope this helps, have a nice day.:)

We have sold a lot of Mosquitos, I actually own one myself. If you use the CCI mini mags you will have no issues and it is a fun gun for training and plinking. One of my customers called complaining and in short he was using the federal bulk, I told him about the mini mags, once he converted his ran fine. I suspect those who got rid of theirs for not working properly never took the time to read and understand the owners manual..... On a side note if you are looking for a target 22 get the Ruger Mark series.....

I still have one of the first threaded barrel models. It hates Remington bulk ammo worse than liberals but shoots fine with Federal Gold Cup or Blazer. Use lots of WD 40 and clean well after every session.

I picked up an GSG (ATI) 22lr 1911 a couple weeks ago and could not be happier with it. It shoots pretty much anything I feed it, Federal American Eagle, CCI, Winchester Wild Cat, and Remington bulk pack. The Mosquito's I've fired (6 in total) convinced me that I will not own one. Too many malfunctions to count, they would only shoot CCI mini-mags quasi-reliably (only 1 malfunction/mag). The GSG has performed very well as has my Ruger 22/45 which I consider to be one of the best 22lr pistols out there. The Mosquito and Walther P22 look like fun guns, but they are frustrating with all the malfunctions. I would recommend a Ruger or GSG 1911 for plinking and generally fun shooting .22lr pistols.

Ive used a very used gsg 1911 .22 at the range(rental gun) i liked it, no issues.

We had the Sport model with longer barrel and added front weight which really kept recoil low, plus you can take the added weight off and the longer barrel can be threaded at a later date. However, we used mini-mags exclusively and it was still only 95%. It would run fine and then start acting up and you just had to put it away for a thorough cleaning/lube. It was an earlier model, though, so maybe the new ones are improved.

I have since bought a Ruger Mark III and can go through 500 rounds of bulk high or low velocity in a short afternoon, even mix SV and HV in the same magazine, and it performs 100%.

The Mosquito is such a great platform though, I would consider buying another if I knew they would perform as well as the Ruger.

Edited: I just noticed the above post about the GSG. Just saw one recently at the range and it had some issues with high velocity, but ran standard velocity bulk pack perfectly, no failures all afternoon - and a 1911 platform.

My Mosquito also runs great. I broke it in on Mini-Mags as the manual(and package inserts) suggest, the pistol runs fine on the ammo I've tried its also pretty accurte for me and a blast to shoot. Mostly I like it much better has a "practice pistol" than the more target oriented types.

Sig moquito feels great in the hand and points well. Unfortunately, that's about the only two things it does well. Mine was did not function reliably with anything other than CCI MiniMags(even after the recommended break-in). Problem with that was that the MiniMags just weren't accurate enough for me to enjoy shooting it.

There are much better choices out there in the same price range. Ruger Mk III's, Buckmarks, etc.

My personal dealing with two Mosquitos are they are very ammo sensitve. One didn't run on Minimags, but on fed bulk, the other ran on Winchester bulk, not Fed or Rem bulk. Too picky for my taste, but will run if you find the ammo it likes.

Owned a mosquito and sold it.

Unsuppressed -- super reliable and reasonably accurate.
Suppressed -- never could it get it to function right.

Ended up getting a P22 which shoots flawlessly suppressed or unsuppressed.

In my experience, the Mosquito is most definitely ammo-finicky. Mine will cycle CCI-MiniMags 100% reliably. Federal bulk is another animal altogether - about 6 out of 10 rounds misfeed. Switch back to MiniMags, and back to 100% reliable. It's cleaned every time I shoot it, and I've polished up all the internals. All in all I like mine - as long as I'm shooting the MiniMags.

Yea, I had many FTF/FTE etc on EACH mag. Was ready to throw it down range. Finally found to use CCI MM. Slick.

I am glad to have stuck with the Mosquito through all of its bashing over the last year or so.

Great plunking, range. But not good for high accuracy. In the end, a keeper.

Bought 1 and sig rplaced it twice. It ran ok but nothing like a ruger mark 3 or buckmark.

I've been wanting a Mosquito, I just like the looks, but apparently they have issues.
I did buy a Bersa Thunder 22 and I'm thoroughly impressed with it.

are there any other semi auto 22lrs with a threaded barrel with at least a 4.75 inch barrel?

The normal mosquito over here doesnt happen because the barrel is "too short" for the laws, but the threaded and sport option is fine.

id like the Ruger 22/45 but the barrel is too short by 7mm :/

The Mosquito is the worst gun I have ever owned (past tense), and Sig's service is the worst I have ever experienced from a gun company.
