Something I have not heard of for while is the 243-3000 or 243-250 I think the 250 Savage is just about what your asking for? the before mentioned 257 Roberts would be another in between the two cartridge choice.

.250 Savage and .257 Bob are certainly intermediate calibers. And great ones at that. My favorite intermediate is the 6.5x55

Well yes, if it doesn't have to be a thirty, there are some wonderful options in smaller bore sizes and the 6.5 Swede is one of the best. However, "intermediate rifle cartridge" in common parlance means a cartridge smaller than full-sized, such as the Russian x39 cartridge family or our own .223, a smaller case capacity, not just a smaller bullet.

This only applies if you are using a semi auto. A bolt gun has enough extraction force. Also no one is going to use steel cases for a fire formed case. 30 AK improved sounds very doable.

I would be fun to rechamber a .308 barrel to this and see what potential it has.

Unless your barrel has a very long shank rechambering a 308 to 7.62x39AI wouldn't be a great idea. You would need to remove most if not all of the old chamber to make it work.
