Springfield Armory 1911's are made in Brazil.

most SA 1911's are simply forged in brazil, and finished in IL. all of the GI's and some of the milspecs are totally made in brazil, but that's it.

the EMP is totally american made (thus it's seemingly overpriced MSRP). the PRO is also totally american made.

many "american" 1911 makers outsource the forging of frames, and other various parts to other countries, not just SA.

Hey Iowa, good to see a fellow "tall corn" stater here! Believe it or not any grip that your hand does not completely wrap around will eventually begin to feel comfortable with enough time behind it. That being said, there are some which are instantly more friendly to a large hand. I chose the Smith & Wesson M&P 40 as my SD/CCW for its reputation, ergonomics (as they pertained to the single trigger-style safety only) and finally size.
Being 6' 3" and North of 230lbs my hands tend to be bigger than most yet the medium grip of the M&P (it comes with three sizes) felt right at home to me while my father at 5' 9" was content with the small grip. I can shoot with the large but I prefer the additional squeeze I get with a slightly smaller grip. (Not a white knuckle death grip but Firm). .40cal is extremely popular at present or you could go with the 9mm, the pistol's size does not change.
I have no problem with the other manufacturers you've listed and plan on adding a 1911 to my collection from either Springfield or Kimber (its down to those two) depending on economic factors. If I had had another $150 with me the day I bought my M&P I would have gone home with a Sig and never known what a terriffic pistol S&W designed.
One last thing, After nearly 500 rounds now (7 weeks) zero problems, positive extraction with every type of ammo and with a few parts from Apex a crisp 4 lb. trigger pull (measured by my gunsmith from the center of the trigger).

Just joined THR but I've been lurking for a long time. I'll weigh in on this one.

I've got a safe full of autos but when I head out to the desert for an afternoon of pistol fun there's always at least one SIG in the bag. I've got an older P226 chambered in 9mm, a newer P226 chambered in .357 SIG, a newer P220 in 45 ACP, and lastly, a P220 Sport that I picked up at a gunshow a month back that is also chambered in 45 ACP. That's it for the large frame SIGs. I've also got a P239 as my "nightstand gun" and a P232 just for the heck of it.

I'm really fond of the SIG autos. They point very naturally and I find that I can get my hand up higher on the frame (closer to the axis of the bore) on the SIGs compared to my Colt 1911-A1s and HKs. Recoil is very manageable and ALL of my SIGs are extremely accurate. Dependability is second to none IMHO.

On a related note, I'd like to thank the members of THR for the education that led to the recent purchase of the P220 Sport. Went to the gun show on a Saturday and saw the gun. I went home that night to see if I could find one of those nifty aftermarket compensators to bolt on to one of my existing SIGs. My research on this site and others revealed that what I had seen was a like new P220 Sport. Went back to the gun show first thing the following morning and bought the gun for an extremely reasonable price. Took it out in the desert that afternoon to test it out and was delighted at its accuracy and reduced recoil. What a great gun!!

I picked it up today

While at the range wednesday with a some buddies trying out a couple of thier guns, i found out that one of them has a brother-in-law in a jam and needing some cash. He had a Kimber StainlessTLE/RL II he was trying to sell..3 months old and only had it out once. less than 50 rounds. 2 mags, locking case, 2 boxes of ammo all for $825.... we took it to the range today and i loved it.. for stock its one of the better fits i have found. now i have to go try a few sets of grips and maybe like a few of you have said the MSH. but thats for tomorrow...

i will post pics when i get home... phone wont let me upload them.
