Which semi-auto pistol would you bet your life on out the box?

Glock 17 with 33 round mag, crimson trace laser attachment, night sights, sure fire flashlight, hornady TAP ammo, yep, thats what I would go with.
If I needed to be quiet, Sig Mosquito with Tac-65 supressor

For utter reliability, probably a Sig 232, my father went at least 12 years without cleaning his once, and it has literally never malfunctioned.

Any HK in any caliber. That said I don't carry any pistol until I've run 300-400 rounds through it. Out of the box and with a field clean and lube as well. I won't use any weapon until I have all the factory grease cleaned off and a quality lube put on.

My personal choice would be any full sized Glock handgun. I have owned and used a lot of Glocks in my lifetime and I have never seen one legitimately malfunction.

What about Kimber?

I was curious and had to ask. After reading through many of the posts and seeing the XD do so well, and seeing very little mention of Kimber, why is that?

I've had dealers poo poo the XD and of course some of the advertisements would have you believe that Kimber is the best thing since sex. Only trouble being that Kimber is very proud of their guns. ($$)

I even thought their new Ultra CDP II in .45 might be a good CCW. Am I way off?

So -- whazzup>? Please educate me. Thanks in advance.

That's actually quite unusual. Mine begins to malfunction after about 250 rounds have gone down range. A quick wipe down of the feed ramp, chamber, and slide rails and I'm back in business though. I have heard similar experiences from others.

+1 on the makarov. that little gun is what is the one i keep loaded in the house, so i kind of am betting my life on it. And to put it simply, the Soviet Union didnt keep crap weapons in front line service for that long.

I don't count on any semi-autos as my "go to gun in a fight". But if I had too I would pick a Ruger P95. I know I will get a reaction. I like Berettas, CZs, Sigs and Springfields. But the P95 has been known to work with all kinds of ammo does not need to be broke in and is accurate enough for combat. Its not pretty but will get the job done. But with that in mind I will still take my Ruger Police Service Six or my Smith & Wesson model 10. Both are 4 inch police service revolvers. Never had one fail yet.

updated count

Glock 64
XD 28
HK 17
sig 9
BHP 9
Berreta 5
Makarov 5
any/all 1911s 8

I really am surprised that this has gone on as long as it has.

A Truer tally

I went back and counted every gun that got a vote that was a true handgun. I only counted the first choice if you listed more than one. So, it did change some of the earlier tallies because if your first choice wasn't on the list then I took the next in line that was on the list. Consequently both Glock and Sig lost a few votes along the way.
I basically sorted guns by manufacturer except for 1911s. A vote for any 1911 went into the any/all 1911 category.

Glock 61
XD 27
HK 17
CZ 10
Sig 9
Any/all 1911's 9
S&W 7
Makarov 6
Browning 6
Ruger 6
Berreta 5
Walther 1
FN 5.7 1
Taurus 1
