Which semi-auto pistol would you bet your life on out the box?

I have a H&K usp .40 by my bedside because I trust it completely. I hold it in my hand and inspect it, I swear it's like a piece of artwork to me. I really love it, it's never failed, and usp .40's have been through torture tests perfectly. Those tests would have destroyed other guns that have more parts, and stupid features. 1911, I'm looking in your direction.

The only sensible, prudent answer.

Great, but what if the SHTF and you did not have your "broken in" gun and you could run into a gun store and get something new off the shelf (Autopistols please, many would grab other items I'm sure) what would you grab to use out of the box?

It's not a matter of being broken in, per se, but well tested and proven to be reliable. That's probably what you meant, but I want to be explicit, that's all.

In the spirit of trying to answer the original question, I'd pick one to use but I still wouldn't trust my life with it. :D Which one? I'll put in a vote for the S&W M&P, since it was my favorite when I went shopping for my first handgun.

I don't know whether it's more or less reliable out of the box than Glocks, HKs, SIGs, and others, but they all seem about the same to me. Every one of them went bang every time when I tried them, despite being filthy rental guns, while .22 LR autopistols kept jamming on me (the RSO thought I was limp-wristing the .22s , but then they jammed on him, too :neener: ). My sister, who treats everything gingerly despite being fairly strong, managed to limp-wrist a Glock 17 a couple of times, causing FTEs (never happened to me, and I know it doesn't happen so easily with every individual Glock), but the others kept chugging along. I actually tried to get my own M&P to fail while testing it (loading only a single cartridge at a time for safety's sake, although it never flew out of my hand :)) but it wouldn't. There's one more tiny data point for you.

Ok, this is the way I think. If I know I am going to be betting my life on it and the only stipulation is that it be new out of the box I would choose something like this.... and have 30 rounds and a scope

Some of these posts are truly inspired humor! Seriously, before the advent of the Glock pistol, there were no semi-automatic pistols that were dependable fresh from the box, none!
Glock changed that, now everyone makes their very own version of the Glock as a matter of course, so I'll stick with the original...No pistol should ever be considered reliable enough to bet your life on, however I know a Glock is going to work out of the box, indeed, I've never had one that hasn't...

Nice try.:D I might count it in the Sig column but I don't want to open the flood gates on this one. Early in the thread I threw out an AK based "pistol". So far I have had no votes for Uzis or Glock 18s which is good because that is not really the spirit of this thread. Again, this is merely meant to find out which pistol/brand is thought of as being the most reliable out of the box. Right now Glock has firm hold on first with the Springfield XD line in a strong second and H&K in third. I picked the first two in my original post but, I must admit, had I picked a third place it would have been the Sig. Hey two out of three ain't bad.:D

best

Like everyother question asking for an opinion, u ask 50 people and u most likely will get about 50 different answers.

None? Not even the 1911A1 that our soldiers used in the trenches of Pacific? That until now we are using?

1, my colt special combat gvt .45 1911 which has failed zero times.
2. my glock 19c 9mm with nearly 9200 rds through it! it's had a few fte's but that wasn't the guns fault, limp wristing new shooters. otherwise, it is rock solid. i trust it fully.
3. any makarov! load up the darn magazine and fire it!! luckily, i have a very good bulgarian model.

Something with a hammer. Taurus/Baretta 92 or a 1911 probably. I don't fancy glocks because my hands dont fit them well.

Really, a .45colt or .44mag revolver would be the supreme choice for power and control in my hands

CZ223, Sorry I guess I missed you throwing out the AK based pistol.... I was trying to tell the truth and be funny. Ok if that one didn't count I will choose this one... Which I love. I didn't by it NIB but I would bet my life on a CZ p-01 NIB.
