The 1911 pistol: Obsolete, irrelevant and immaterial

"Political manipulation, commercial propaganda, and just plain old BS have led people (including the government) to accept stuff like the M-16/AR and Glocks as fine weapons"

Oh yeah, the M14 wouldn't know anything about those shenanigans... (or the 1911 for that matter; can you say 'Pedersen's Remington M53?')

... NOT!

Seriously, ... despite having the alleged "handicap" of a (typical) 8+1 magazine, the 1911 is still a proven and successful battlefield weapon.

The premise behind these types of questions is wrong anyway.

Wars (declared or not), "police actions," humanitarian interventions, military skirmishes of all sorts, et. al, are, on the soldier level, fought by rifles, not sidearms.

Still, ... I can see where it would beg the question of what would a soldier carry for a pistol if he could choose?

Sadly, I'll never know who the U.S. soldier was who carried this 1911 on to the 2-way shooting range that was WW1, but I'm reasonably sure he didn't b*tch that it wasn't a 9mm Glock or a Beretta.

1915 Colt 1911.

If given choice of .45ACP for combat I would pick G21. Lighter weapon with high magazine capacity that is easier to use, field strip and maintain. I bought military 1911 referred to as M45A1. It is shocking to realize that this is same weapon as certain Marine Corps troops were issued. Whoever picked that light brown **** color for finish should be shown the door immediately.

Great thread to get the 1911 fans outraged! :)

I have four and like them a lot, but I don't give two poops if someone calls them outdated or useless or whatever.

Getting upset every time someone said something stupid or wrong would be a full-time job.

Hah.

Actually... when one reads the original post in it's entirety, one finds a soothing story, after all. That little story was the whole point of the original post. :)

Yep, but it still brings out the torches and pitchforks. :)

I knew a guy stationed in Germany in the 80's who got a WW2 1911A1 to train on.. it went full auto.

All the guns in that class went back for inspection and repair. What do you want from a 40+ year old MP training pistol?

Another friend was issued one as a Bradly commander on Gulf War 1. He admitted he could shoot it and it went bang every time but he said it rattled like a baby toy, slide to frame fit was awful. Low capacity 'if he needed it' bothered him.

Some of those 1911's we brag about saw a very hard service life. The fact that will still brag about them, in spite of their flaws, says a lot.

no such thing as obsolete.. heck, if i could build something like this but with a real gun (this is definitely an airsoft build since the slide/barrel couldnt possibly reciprocate with the rail and light where its positioned) then id open-carry one of these when outdoors just for the sake of not being like everyone else and having a glock.. also, this appears to be a replica of the 712 model which was selective fire
