I was discussing this board with someone via email. I notice we are at THR. In full text, is that The High Road or The Highroad?

Jorg, I have to ask... just HOW are you familiar with JoJo?...

I'm just implying...

I must admit, I had heard of a singer named JoJo, but to my knowledge, I don't think I've ever heard any of her songs, and would've had no clue about the name of her album, even to make the joke. Jorg is in for it unless he's got a teenage daughter.

THR works for me.

I'm glad Oleg didn't name the site for his favorite album. "Oops!...I Did It Again" just doesn't roll off the tongue well.

I don't know about any highroad album, but 35 yrs aga or so, there was a band/person named Jo Jo Gunn; the song was "Ride".

Well, this is THR...Not TH.

Hehehe. Works for me!

Reminds me of my days as an OTR trucker. Someone (probably Nana and Poppy in an RV) got on the CB and gave a "Smokey The Bear" report.

Some mean old trucker came back on and said, "It's Smokey Bear, not Smokey THE Bear. You don't say Santa The Claus, do you?"

Bout wet myself I was laughing so hard.

Names, titles, & handles...

Some mean old trucker came back on and said, "It's Smokey Bear, not Smokey THE Bear. You don't say Santa The Claus, do you?"
No, you don't say "Santa The Claus," however (there is always that darn "however!") the Original And Genuine critter, rescued as a cub from a forest fire in New Mexico, and brought to the National Zoo in Wash. D. C, was called Smokey The Bear.

That critter's namesake, the cartoon character in jeans and a USFS Ranger hat, which has taught generations of Americans that " Only YOU can prevent forest fires," is also called Smokey The Bear.

I received my handle because of a highly embarrassing incident in college, involving a 4" fire hose which I'd volunteered to handle alone. (Don't ask.) So in a way, I'm a namesake of a namesake.

The "the" in a name or title seems to be there when the second term is descriptive. E. g. Charles Martel, the Hammer. Or that wrestler, The Crusher. Or Eric the Red. Or Frodo the Nine-fingered.

And "the Bear" most certainly describes "Smokey!"

"Claus" is not descriptive of "Santa" so we do not say, "Santa the Claus." (Actually, "Santa Claus" is a corruption of "Saint Nicholas.")

So Hoo Ha on your mean old trucker. :D

Ah, to be young and stupid again! :)

Except Nana was right. I'm (unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately) old enough to remember when Smokey "the" Fire-Fighting Bear was on the telly every day, reminding us kids (in an artificially deep voice), "Remember, only YOU can prevent forest fires."

It was very definitely Smokey "the" Bear. Smokey Bear suggests either a Mr. Bear whose first name is Smokey, or a bear who has been exposed to a smoke-filled atmosphere. "Smokey" was a bear. Like most mascots of the day (and probably today as well), he only had one name, which was "Smokey." His name was Smokey and he was a bear. Thus, Smokey the Bear.

Nana = 1
Nasty Old Trucker = 0

The official Smokey Bear site has it like this:

What is Smokey's real name?
Smokey's correct, full name is Smokey Bear. In the popular song "Smokey The Bear" written in 1952 by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins a "the" was added to his name to keep the song's rhythm. This small change has caused confusion among Smokey fans ever since
