Postal match!!!

Hmmmmmm!
Looks like it's time to oil the Mountie, buy ammo and hope for
a warm day. I just yesterday found a whole gaggle of the little
3X5 buggers hiding in the back of my desk. :D
Whats the rules? :)

Mo,

The match director gets to make the rules! Unless Jag wants to run this one you get my vote. I'll do the next one.

How about a 50yd bench competition? I'd recommend we run this one for a short length of time, say four weeks or so. Then we can do a 25 yd off hand.

If you want, I'd summarize the rules and e-mail them to you.

Let me know,

A whole month?

I guess that would give everybody time to do it.

I would think that two weeks would be enough, but if you guys want a month I'm cool with it.

I just want to shoot my 39!

And here's one more vote for 50 yards from the bench.

Rollis, I confess I need you to explain what you're writing about.

I see Nem, Burns & Mal all referenced in post 660...not the economist Smith. Am I missing something?

So as to not clutter up this one, should we revive the postcard match thread?

A wide aperture peep isn't exactly the best choice for 50 yards. :( It could, however, motivate me to order a new front sight & target aperture from Dr. Skinner. :)

W/iron sights I'd be looking for a 1" orange dot on the paper plate. I think the dot (which could be handmade) shouldn't be one of those pre-made dots with the crosshairs.

OK help me hammer this out guys, this is what I propose:

The Marlin 39 Club Valentines Day 3x5 Challenge in keeping with the tradition of a holiday theme we had for the first match.

Eligible Firearms: Any variation of Marlin Model 39 is eligible. Any sight system is allowed though scores will be listed under Magnified or UN-Magnified categories.

Ammo: Any Ammunition that will function in your 39 is legal. What do you guys think about giving a bonus -- like a 10% reduction in group size-- to those who use ammo that costs less than $0.02/round?

Target: 3x5 card with a heart shaped aiming point or plain 3x5 card may be used. The heart may be a sticker or drawn on the target but must be small enough to covered with a U.S.A quarter. You may shoot as many as you like and submit your best (or worst :p ).

Range In order not to handicap our brothers in northern climates and forcing them to shoot outdoors in challenging conditions I propose we use the 25 yard distance again so most indoor ranges can be used. I would be willing to do longer distance categories too if there seems to be enough interest. I just want to be sure we don't exclude any of our winter climate members.

Position How would having an Offhand class AND an any other way -- Benched, sitting, prone --- Class be. That way you'd have an excuse to enter at least two cards and maybe even 4 if you shoot both magnified and unmagnified classes.

Number of shots per Target Three

Scoring I liked the first matches' method of scoring. Distance between
shots 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 3 and 1 added together for score. Distance from center of the card being used to break ties.

Side Match The Duct Tape Challenge Anyone who followed the previous match will probably remember Fast Frank's and Jag's "Tied for Last" competition but in the end Mal out did them with his Duct Tape Scope Mount. In this competition competitors will try to shoot the BIGGEST group they can fit on a 3x5 card. So now being a lousy shot is NOT an excuse for not entering.

Submit Targets to me via Snail Mail (PM for address) with the following information included.

1. Shooter forum name and/or family relation
2. Magnified or Non-Magnified
3. Gun make and model (include any information about custom work)
4. Sights (i.e. Swarovski Optik Z6i 2-12x50 or Skinner peep sights)
5. Shooting position (i.e Offhand, Benched/or anything else
6. Indoor/Outdoor (weather conditions)
7. Ammo
8. Note if this is a Duct Tape Challenge entry

What do you guys think? Lets get this going.

Sounds great, and thanks in advance! I took me a couple reads to figure out the biggest group on purpose thing...

One pedantic point on nomenclature: I recently got "The Art of the Rifle" and Cooper distinguishes between "offhand" and "standing," the difference being w/offhand the left arm is not supported by the ribcage. W/ the standing position the left arm is supported (olympic style).

I used to refer to "standing" as "offhand", which is why I'm being a little pedantic about it. I'd sure hate to shoot the match unsupported when everyone else was shooting olympic style...

Anyone who wants to shoot the match offhand (Cooper's definition) is a real man. Or a real woman, I hope we have some in the club.

We could have a "Cooper offhand" category but that would complicate things.

Should we disallow slings for standing? Probably.

Oh, and let's get the Match thread going again.

Slugless, I agree, offhand should mean Cooper Style.

On the Biggest group side match, I believe it will be equally as difficult to shoot three consecutive shots as far apart as possible onto a 3x5 card as the smallest group. My hope is that those of us that might not participate in the small group competition might be interested in entering the biggest.

After a little more feedback I'll start a new thread with the revised "official" rules, dates, etc. then we can get out our 39's and commence the fun!

I like it!

The cheap ammo thing is a cool idea, but .02 a round might require some thought.

I know we used to buy bullets cheaply in the past, but .02/round is a dollar for a box of 50 or ten bucks for 500. I'm pretty sure that you can't buy bullets for that today.(OK, Not here in Houston anyway. I paid $11.75 plus tax last week for Winchester Xpert bulk at Walmart.)

As far as the standing thing goes, I think it should be that the shooter touches nothing but the rifle and the ground (No leaning on trees or whatever) and is upright. Let us hold the rifle in whatever fashion we chose.

Sounds great!

Duct tape challenge! Oh man! Please don't associate my name with that. I'd never live it down. :)

In truth, shooting the biggest group possible on a 3X5 (nicking 3 different corners would be the biggest group possible, I guess), would be much harder than shooting the smallest group possible. You would have to have precise placement for 3 different locations on the target, as opposed to precise relative placement for only one location (which doesn't necessarily have to be the center). That would be tough!

Mo, this sounds like a great, fun experience.
(And, I'll have my 39 for this one ! {even if not yet ...
my truck has been broken, haven't been able to pick it up yet...})

More thoughts soon ...

My education is some what limited,:( but that is every body else’s fault not mine,:D anyway I have been very slowly reading Smith’s first book which is a collection of his easay's, and I am ashamed to say that more than once my eyes have glazed over.

Brought some of my gun's home from my friends vault and the first thing I did was checked to see if it would function with Remington ammo, it did fine, till the last round which was a Federal that was mixed in with the Rem. (they were in a thirty cal. Can) once again field to extract. Then tried some new Fed with no problems, hopefully it was just a bad lot and this new batch will work out.

Shooting standing

Hi,
shooting standing is simple, The way John Wayne would do it, Period.;), and how about a side class for those standing who are on social security/medicare (must submit a copy of their card)

Mo,

I am all over this. Here's my thoughts on your suggestions:

Eligible Firearms: All good

Ammo: Let's leave it at any ammo that'll work. Life's complicated enough as it is..

Target: All good

Range: Indoors is fine. Let's do an IRONMAN before the weather gets warm though..

Position Standing and Open Class sounds great.

Number of shots per Target Three.. All good

Scoring I liked the first matches' method of scoring. All good

Side Match The Duct Tape Challenge .... Let's shoot for the biggest distance. No sight classfication and we shoot in the Open (Any) Position class.

Double Side Match : Shoot any legal card entry and photograph your 39 with the most interesting thing duct taped to it.

Thoughts?

Marlin M39

I'd like to join the Marlin 39 club.
I love my Marlin. It shoots silky smooth and feeds & shoots everything I have run through it. I can shoot faster and more accurately than my friend with his .22 semi-auto. You don't even need to pull the gun down from your shoulder to reload.
Somewhere in the mid to late 1960s my father purchased a Marlin 39. I used to load it up with twenty-five .22 shorts, (that was back in the days when a box of 50 cost about 50 cents.) We would take it camping in the summer, (left mom & the girls at home.) Dad would fish for 4 days in the clear Idaho stream and I would take the Marlin and hunt anything that moved. I killed a lot of rattle snakes, chipmunks, squirrels, and birds. (I was oldest, I took the rifle and left my younger brothers to play with sticks or whatever they could find.)
As we hiked back towards the cabin one day, Dad caught up with me (I had paused to remove the rattle from the Diamondback I had just shot,) and he pointed off towards a dead tree about 25 yards away that had 4 "Fool Hens" in it. They are also know as Prairie Chickens, Sage Hens, or Grouse. Dad said, "We want those for dinner. I don't want you to ruin any meat. Head shots only." The first three fell with one shot each. The fourth one wouldn't fall. I don't know what happened to my accuracy. I unloaded the gun, (25 rounds minus the 9 or 10 I just shot at the rattler,) (I wanted to make sure it was dead!!!) and I reloaded the rifle while the Fool Hen flew to the next tree and perched again. Several more shots and it just sat there. Dad said, "It is flinching each time you shoot. The bullet is going by its head and it can hear it. Shoot an inch to the left, an inch to the right, and then an inch lower." It fell on the third shot. I was trying so hard to hit it in the head that I was shooting just over top of its feathered scalp.
We picked up the 4 birds and gutted them, then I cleaned the feathers off back at camp. Dad cooked them up in a dutch oven in the wood burning stove's oven. He cut up potatoes and carrots and threw them in with the birds. Good eats!
When I was 17, my uncle's chicken coop got a rat infestation. I would go in at night with the Marlin and spot light rats and pick them off one at a time. Over a 3 week period I killed close to 150 of them. Trouble was, they were multiplying faster than we could kill them. To this day I cannot handle people's "pet rats". Seeing them perched on the top of sleeping chickens and eating the flesh off of their backs was just too too much. (My uncle finally solved the problem a couple months later when he was burning weeds. The fire got out of control and caught the straw stack on fire, which caught the barn on fire, which caught the chicken coop on fire... Only two rats escaped and my uncle killed them with a blow from a shovel.)
When Dad passed away a few years ago, my youngest brother ended up with the Marlin (but I did get my share, Dad gave me a Savage 219 in .219 Zipper caliber.) But I missed the Marlin so much that I bought one summer of 2007 off of Gunbroker. I paid a little over $200 for it. It is a 39A Golden. It has a scope mount, whereas the one from my youth did not.
My next upgrade will be to engrave the stock. (I do wood carving as a hobby,) The picture in my mind's eye is the one from the animated movie "Ratatouille" with "Remy" the rat looking scared and a dozen forks and knives flying at him. The frame of the engraving will be 150 hash marks. Maybe Disney's "Chip & Dale" on the other side. We will have to see how that works out.
Counting rifles and pistols, I have eight .22's. The Marlin 39 I grew up with will always have the most memories.

Match Shooting

Forgive me, I am coming in late here and there are 40+ pages of posts in this forum.
I think the idea of a match shoot is great. An honor system of allowing everyone to shoot their best on a 3x5 card and mail it in, WOW! that's even better.
I am all for it!
Valentines Day was mentioned. It that the due date for the 3x5 card to be submitted? OK, I can deal with that.
Thanks (in advance) for the info!

Clarence

John McL: Brilliant suggestions.

I especially like the biggest distance and the duct tape ideas. I'm worried it may be getting too complicated though. Sounds like a good outline for the "St. Patrick's Day challenge" though.

I just picked up my 39a for $100. It was made in 1972 and has a weaver 2.5 power scope on it. It is in very good condition. I put 300 rounds through it this weekend and it is increadible. The best .22 I have ever fired.

219 Zipper-

In the hubbub of the postal match, I missed your post above.

Welcome to the 39 club!

Like you, my first experience with the model 39 was my dad's gun when I was a kid. It was the first real gun I ever fired.

I too bought another one for myself. It's not the same rifle, but it still brings back memories just the same.

Come shoot with us in the postal match. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=333022

Any excuse to put a few rounds through the 39 is a good one.

ROCCORACER-

Welcome to the club! You bought a 39 with a scope for a hundred bucks? SCORE!

How come I never see these deals?

Zipper and Rocco, I'll echo Frank's welcome. We're glad you're here.

Zip, that honor system seems to permeate THR.
Regardless of philosophical, political, spiritual and
other differences, we respect each other here.

Rocco, wow: $100. Score, indeed.
__________

Sorry to be scarce in the club of late. Business is eating my lunch.
(I'd rather be shooting lever guns at the range or in the woods.)
Yet another 60 hour week in progress. Making progress though.
