I've really enjoyed reading this thread. Joined thehighroad in Sept. 07 and just getting around to my first post. Last wk. I got out my 39a ariticle II commem. Had not shot it since about '73 and had forgotten what a pleasure it was to shoot. It's got me looking for another 39a. One question. I need a hammer extension for it. If I want one like the original, (flat not round or knurled) do I go to Marlin for it or would you know of an aftermkt dealer to try? Many thanks.

I can't believe that only five (5) members have shown interest on this Karma... surely not every one here is an expert at disassemble and reassembly of the 39/39A, and how the inners of this wonderful rifle work together; this DVD is also a good teaching tool for your young ones. How about folks, any one else interested on this gift? Send me an email.

Reading all the posts here starting at #1 and hit page 56 tonite. Saw you're warning about the two screws on the front stock, but alas read that too late. #!&^!
Disassembled my newly acquired 1960 Mountie for a thorough cleaning and re- lube with the help of a friend who has a lot of experience, but not with the 39A. All went well until we tried to get those two screws back into the cap. One went in with no problem, the second does not want to go all the way, stopping with about a
16th inch of the head above the cap hole.
We wrestled with that for a half hour being careful not to crossthread or strip the screw or the tip tenon. No joy as no matter what we tried it just wouldn't seat all the way
down. Makes no sense. If the factory can get it seated then it should be able for anyone with reasonable skill and care to seat it also methinks.
Doesn't bother anything but just looks bad. Guess I'll leave it alone until/unless more ideas materialize that may allow this issue to be resolved. Meh!

Thanks for the kind words. The rings I used are Weaver Grand Slam medium and they were just high enough for the Nikon 40mm to clear the barrel, I didn't think they were going to work for me.

Can I Join?
Just picked up my first 39A, a Mountie, at my FFL this week. Serial number has an "S" prefix, which I understand means manufactured in 1959. Been cleaning 50 years of fouling out of the action, but I think she'll be a great shooter. Haven't taken my own pics yet, but here're the ones from Gunbroker.

By the way, is the front swivel loop supposed to be immobile. In other words, the rear loops swings on the swivel, but the front loop is frozen in the swivel.

I could use a little help. I read the post by dwheel too late when he advised against removing the two small screws holding the forestock to the front tenon under the front swivel cap. Apparantly there has been a history of trouble getting these two screws to go back into place.
When attempting to reinsert and tighten these screws, one goes in and seats fine while the other will not screw all the way down flush and sticks out about a sixteenth of an inch. I've carefully checked to make sure nothing was cross threaded and all appears clean.
On the face of it, there seems to be no reason to have a problem with what appears to be a simple task, ie., line up the hole in the steel swivel cap with the hole in the wood forestock and the hole in the free floating steel tenon, insert screw straight on, and tighten down.
Any advice, tips, etc., regarding how to fit both screws back into their proper place correctly?

Next time you login on the forum select “remember login.” Once logged in, if using the Internet Explorer browser, place a shortcut to the forum thread on your desktop. To do so, open Marlin 39 forum thread in IE, right click your mouse on the HTML page and select “create shortcut” on the menu. A shortcut will be placed on your desktop.

If I was going to shoot it I wouldn't want to pay more than $500. If I was a collector I'd probably pay closer to a grand.
They are cool little rifles. I had one for until I was offered WAY more than I paid for it... It was used hard, dings, bluing wear etc...
For all around use your Mountie will serve you better. Very small weight penalty and the extra 4" of barrel still fits in a larger backpacks. The velocity difference is minimal but the short TDS barrel does increase the report significantly and it tougher for older eyes to see the front sight that much closer...
Handy little packing gun.
