Nem, That's a commemorative rifle. 100 years of the NRA. The badge says, 1871 to 1971 The right to bear arms. As a rule I don't buy commemoratives but I made an exception because I liked the octagon barrel and the crescent butt stock.

Due to California law, I have to wait a month to receive it. Consignment guns are held for 30 days to prevent easy sale of stolen firearms.
Damn this Forum. It keeps costing me money.

I might have to change my handle to 30/30 man!
I guess I need to be in this club. My dad bought a Marlin 336 30/30 sometime around 1976 or '77. I remember he took me on my first deer hunt the same year he bought it, and I carried that gun. We were hiking down a steep hill and I stepped on a wet log and slipped and fell and dropped the gun. It had a hammer side extention (that is what I call it anyway) and it got knocked off. I felt real bad about that. I killed my first deer with that gun when I was 17 or 18, and took several more in the years that followed. Years later I found out one of my brothers had ended up with the gun and I traded him out of it. I still have it, and I have taken quite a few deer with it since then. Two years ago I bought a Savage 25-06 and hunted with it. This summer I bought a Ruger .41 magnum and decided I need to get into reloading. I could not afford to get a reloading kit, so I decided to sell a gun.
It was between the Savage and the Marlin, but the decision was not a hard one for me to make at all. The Savage would go. So I sold it a last week and ordered my reloading kit.
Well, being new to this site, I just found this thread today about the Marlin Club. I read around 7 pages and just couldn't take it anymore. I had to get out my Marlin. I went to town earlier today and bought some new scope mounts to replace the see through mounts I have had on the gun for years. I never have used the open sights and I figure getting the scope lower might make it better. So I took those off, and cleaned it up (getting off the dust and putting a little oil on it) and all the while recalling all the fun I've had with that baby. The poor old gun has been through hell. It is scratched and dinged up pretty good. I took the butt stock off and sanded it down to put a new finish on it. I am a pretty good artist, so I am thinking of either carving something on the side of it, or wood burning in a scene. (I am bad about customizing anything I ever get. It is a wonder I haven't done anything to it already!)
It isn't as pretty as that Savage, or some of my other guns, but I feel I have the best combo in the land: My Marlin and Ruger .41. And what I hear about those new Hornady Leverevolution bullets, I can shoot as far as I would ever need to anyway. Though I have made some pretty good shots with that Marlin as it is.
Well, thanks for the memories. And if permitted, I'd be honored to join The Club.

I suspect you were reading that 336 thread,
and somehow, after stopping for a while to get out your Marlin,
reloaded the forum and wound up here thinking it was the same.
Understandable minor mistake. After all, 3 + 6 = 9.
Admittedly, there's lots of membership overlap
between the two threads.

I have mixed feelings about the 30 day thing. It's a PITA to wait a month for my near-antique .22. But if MY guns are ever stolen, I sure don't mind having a system in place to allow tracking them down before they're sold off and the thief gets a bunch of cash from them.
Now what's kinda screwed up is that I don't think they were smart enough to write in an exemption for those of us who can show paperwork on a gun we're selling. If I have a 4473 with that serial number, my signature and a matching sales receipt (all of which I actually do keep), it makes no sense to make me or the dealer wait 30 days.
Of course, "well-written law" is an oxymoron, with all the morons in the legislature.
Anyway, if you're ever down this way, you're welcome to compare a 39A with a 39M. My opinion remains that each has its separate merits. The practical accuracy of the 39A with the heavy 24" barrel is some of the best I've experienced. I finally got a chance to really plink with it, and it will easily split clay pigeons edge-on lying flat on the ground at 70-90 yards, standing offhand, with iron sights. I doubt that the shorter, lighter rifle will sit that steady. We'll see.
Seems like the jackrabbit I missed with the 39A at that range was all about me being over-excited the first time I took the rifle out, not the rifle's fault! I have that problem...

About to buy an 1894C (today if I can find one ) with straight grips.

I hardly notice the difference between a pistol grip and a straight grip when holding the gun. My first rifle was a sidelock muzzleloader.
There can be a difference in perceived recoil. A PG stock encourages and facilitates the "stretching the gun" technique. Not an issue with a .22 rimfire.
Note that there is actually a near-infinite range of "pistol grip" designs, from near vertical like a Springfield Whitefeather, all the way to the almost-straight "Prince of Wales" design used on many field shotguns. The Marlin PG levers are a lot closer to the latter than the former.

I took my 1981 39 to the range this weekend. I had a scope on it but have since gone back to using the iron sights. I had some PMC Moderators with me. They are pretty quiet to shoot, but as quiet as CB shorts.
I traded a S&W M15 for it in 1982 at a gun show. Back then you could get the S&W M15 for $130 new.

I bought this 39TDS from a dealer in LA (state not city) and I can't wait to get it should be to me next week sometime. It's new, never been fired. I paid too much and I will shoot the heck out of it. My grandson will too so I think I'll leave the ugly cross bolt safety. It may be ugly but it is SAFE!
Does anyone know if it's drilled and tapped for a tang sight like the old 39A's?
Also, I've not been able to date it, the ser# is TDS01621. Anyone know the date?

The date/serial number formula doesn't seem to apply to the TDS. I'm still trying to figure out when mine was made.
Great little carbines. I'm betting you'll soon forget how much you paid and probably wouldn't take twice that for it.

1950 39A and Marble's Peep Tang
I put a Marble's Peep Tang sight on my 1950 39A because I didn't want to scope it but had I to do something. Older eyes I guess.
When I sighted it in I got to 2.5 in groups at 50 yards. What's puzzling is that I have the Peep Tang adjusted way left. I figured it must be me so to check used a lazer bore sight on it to see if it lined up. It's dead on.
Any ideas? :banghead:

One possible experiment: Check to see if the sight base can be turned around and the sight stem and aperture can be reversed.

I lost the rear sight elevator to mine and I can not find a replacement any where. The modern elevators I bought from Numrich and from Brownell's are two high. Please consider. Thank you.

I hope you find what you're looking for. I never sell parts, even if I'm not using them. I may want to put the rifle back to stock and sell it some day. As a matter of fact I collect spare parts! I have a spre extractor and ejector and will probably add to that list with a firing pin, extra screws. etc...

Thanks for the tips. I'm impatient so I took the Marble's sight completely apart. I now know more about the sight than I ever wanted to! Lot's of tiny ball bearings! It turns out the elevation knob was not seated correctly. long story short I fixed it upon reassembly, issue one resolved.
It was still a bit off, but I never could figure out exactly why. It's either the tang is slightly turned right or the base of the sight is a little off. The problem is that I can't measure or see it. So I "fixed" it by cutting a couple shims from an aluminum pop can and now it's straight.
I did learn one thing: The sight needs to be very perpendicular to the rifle or the elevation and wind adjustments will not be vertical and horizontal respectively. They will travel at an angle and both will have to be adjusted each time you want to move in either direction.

Marble's Peep tang wiggles?
I haven't shot it yet, but my marbles peep seems to wiggle a little when you open/close it. Once it is open, does it stay in place enough to maintain zero? I know it is not a scope for 500 yards or anything, but the sight seems to have too much play in it. In the open position it seems to settle down if I move it one way or the other.
Maybe a replacement part needed? I'll report back once I finally get to the range with it.

My 39A is still at the smith's getting a firing pin repair and possible action tune up. Haven't heard anything back yet. I'm getting a little anxious, but he's busy because he's so good, thus I'll be patient.

Have been caught up in a tune up of my 336 for a couple of weeks (reported over in the 336 club pages), and researching the new 1894C, now in transit to a local store for me. (What me? Excited? Naw ... not in the least ... )
I'll be sparse in these parts this week, and entirely off line from late Thursday through early next week - working on a BIG studio project that's going to eat my time ...
