Good point Fast Frank. I have shot a red dot but never actually owned one, thus my knowledge is a little lean.

Okay, so change the two classes to -- magnified and non-magnified.

Thanks, ~Jeff

Scoped It Out

I have ordered my Skinner Sights for my Golden 39A today, but I also want to shoot while I wait for Tim to send me the peep sights. Also want to compete in both the Magnified and Non-Magnified classes of the upcoming Marlin 39 Postcard Match.

So, since I have given up hunting because my buddy with land sold it off, I have robbed my Mauser .308 custom of it's long standing Swarovski Optik Habicht 4x32A. This is not their top of the line scope, but I don't know it's cost since my dad gave it to me with the Mauser many years ago.

I'm sure I can shoot well with it, I group about 1" at 150 yards with the Mauser, so now I guess I'll see how well it works on the Marlin. :D

Can I join?

Here's my entry. Marlin 1897 24inch octagon barrel. BTW it needs a new barrel(shot out), and a new stock( this one was repaired with screws, but not me). I've have tried to Google but can only find the Annie Oakley(18in) barrel.

Chef, welcome in.

Wow. Has that one really been around for as long as it looks?

Forgive my naivite, but is it really an 1897, as in made then, or ...

In any case, it's a beauty. Hope folks here can help with restoration.
I have confidence that there's at least one in here who can ...

Any chance for some more close ups?

N~

PS: what's cooking in the chef's kitchen? :)

Jag, if that Swarovski scope let's you put groups into 1" at 150 with the 39,
then ... game over for the rest of us, eh?

The rest of us can just use our index cards for grocery lists. :D

Nematocyst

Nematocyst, best I could find out it was built in 1915. Probably one of the last ones. Banana bread is one of my favorites, I do pastries at a local diner. Will try for better picture tomorrow.

Yes!! the psychological war has begun

Now if I can convince everyone that a stock lever gun shoots just as well as a custom made Mauser bolt gun on a rest...

Postcard Match Update

So Nem, have you gotten your 39 back yet? I'm itchin to start the postcard match but just don't feel right doing so without the Founding Father of The Marlin 39 Club being able to participate.

If anyone is reading this late and are wondering what the postcard match is, go here to read the rules and tell me what think of our little internet competition.

This sounds fun, but the date should be set towards the end of the year, because of the
Schedules some of use have. Also I’m being selfish because all my guns are put up until after the move is done.

Jag,

Still don't have my 39 back yet. :(

Also, I'm in a tight spot financially for a couple of weeks, too (my business in summer slows to a snail's pace, rent is due, and I've got a broken truck) so even if my smith calls me tomorrow that it's ready, I can't get it until I get some money rolling in (working on that now).

And even after I get it back, I need to finish sighting in the new scope and to do some practice. It's a nearly new gun for me; I just wanted to get that firing pin fixed before continuing to "get familiar with it".

Point is, thanks for the thought  but I don't want to hold up you guys. I can always try my hand at it later.

Nem

Nem, Sorry to hear about your financial hardships. Been their myself in the not distant enough past. Been doing fairly well lately, but in debt up to my eyeballs and one (more) disaster away from having to scrape bottom again.

On a positive note I got to go to the range today with my kids, ages 14 and 16. I zeroed in the scope and let them shoot a bit at 25 yards. After a while, I put up three targets and told them we each get three shots at a target. I have to admit they gave me a run for the money. I won with about a 1/2 inch group, my son, 16, got second with about a 1 inch group, and my daughter, the 14 years old, had two shots about 1/4 inch apart, but a 2 inch flier.

But then something in my daughter clicked. Suddenly she knew she could do this well. She went crazy with a 3" orange dot target putting about 15 out of 19 shots on target. :what: She was having a blast, and had a smile etched on her face for hours. This was the first time she has shot a rifle and I must say I was quite proud of her. This is why I got the Marlin 39A!

My son also was doing quite well, though he would never show the emotion my daughter does. I could tell he was having a great time. He was hitting 2" dots at 25 yards consistently.

We also had the .357 with us, shooting .38 specials. My daughter has shot this before a few times and with some coaching she was hitting the 3" dot at 3 yards. Mind you this gun only has a blade front sight, no white on it or anything. Personally I am not a very good shot with a pistol, I did manage to hit the 3" dot at 3 yards a couple times.

A young man was there with a new AR-15 doing some barrel break in, and he let the kids shoot his other AR. Well, now they want me to pick up an AR-15. :banghead: Seriously they loved it, the guy was really nice and as I told them on the way out, you meet the nicest people at gun ranges. :)

Here is my group at 25 yards using a sandbag. I'm pleased with the 39A. :D

Okay everyone!

The postcard match, when would everyone like to make the deadline? I will start the bidding at Thanksgiving, giving us about 2 and a half months to get to the range and put some holes in postcards, and another couple weeks to mail them off. Anyone have an opinion? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

~Jeff

Shooting the Great Model 39 Postal Match can start and end whenever is convenient for the group. I'm not picky, and a little time to do something with my 20 pound gritty trigger might be nice.

I'm going to the range tomorrow, maybe I'll shoot a group or two with the 39, but what I've been working on is my model 60.

I just did the trigger mods to it and it's turning into a first class little rifle.

I hope someday to get my model 39 shooting like that 60 does... Now THAT would be something!

AR15s, huh?

Lots of folks are turned off by the whole"Evil Black Rifle" thing, but I have one (M4 style) and it's really a GREAT little rifle.

Hope things smooth out for you Nemo, the one thing that you can always count on is the fact that everything changes eventually.

Now, I'm going to load up for the range tomorrow. Maybe I can post a pic or two when I get home.

Globe Front Sight

Does anyone know of a particular front aperture, or globe, front sight that fits a Marlin 39 or 39A? Does it fit the ramp? How tall is it?

TIA

Just for fun I shot a couple of 3x5 cards at the range yesterday. I didn't have a felt pen so I just aimed center mass and squeezed them off.

Details:
Sunny 74*F, light breeze quartering form behind
Range = 25 yards
Position = sitting on my butt, elbows on my knees
Marlin 39A Mountie (1964 vintage, all stock, open sights)
Ammo = Federal bulk ammo.

I think this baby is ready for Grouse hunting next month :D

If your first 39a (after some years of wanting one) arrives tomorrow by UPS can you still join the club today? I finally broke down and bought a 1977 39a that seems to be very clean even though I need another .22 like a hole in the head. I've been looking at pre safety 39s and with the rumors about discontinuing and all just decided this was the time. Looking forward to doing the postcard match!

Sign me up. don't know too much about the history. I got it about 10 years ago. It was my dads and it's very accurate. He used it for varmit hunting.

Me and Black Majik are in. :)

Mine's a beater shooter I bought at a show for $200. One of the previous owners e-penciled his name on the left side of the receiver. :( A pox on him and his offspring! Other than that, the blueing was about 90%, the wood was good (pretty damn good now, after I refinished it), and the barrel was great. Oh, and it's a 1960's Mountie. :D I put a set of Skinner sights on mine.

BM's is a freakin' thing of beauty. He's got good photo-fu skills, too, so I'll let him provide the details. :p

Sign me up as a 39 club member. I bought a 39a back in 1980. My college roomate and I used to go out on the weekends and shoot the heck out of 'em. He worked at Big K and got a discount on .22 ammo, so we would pool our money and buy it by the brick :what:

We also had a matched set of H & R .22 revolvers we paid $40 apiece for when new. I don't know how many thousands of rounds of .22 ammo we fired off down in the creek bed firing at tin cans, empty shotgun shells, eggs, and whatever we thought would be a great target, but went thru a lot of ammo and had a great time. Of course we lived off of potted meat and spam, but we at least had our priorities right :D

I sold that 39a, along with a couple of other firearms (to include a 336), to be able to afford my wife's engagement and wedding rings. My wife is great, so I definetely got the best of that deal, but now I am shopping around for another 39a and a 336 and will have them soon.

Thanks for this thread as it has brought back a lot of memories.

Wow. Five (or six, once BM gets here) new members in just over 2 hours.
That's got to be some kind of record, at least for this club.

Welcome in, all, whether you've got one, plan to get one soon,
are just considering getting one eventually, or even if you just have a curiosity about them.

For those that's got em, get 'em sighted in for the great index card shootin' match.
Based on Mo's prelim results, I'd say there's going to be some stiff competition goin' on ...

Nem

Make it interesting, how about 100 yd?

I finally sighted my Marble peep tang in at 50, and then rolled it up another 16 clicks to get on paper at 100 yards. Shooting wallyworld federal bulk off a front rest, I had more than 3/4 landing in the white (about 3MOA) of the 8/4 MOA ironsightaction.com targets (my favorite target lately) Does this sound decent at 100 yds?

I want to do more work at 100 than 50 because I want to shoot the 39a while the centerfire cools off, especially in the summertime. That, and to preserve my shoulder and ammo budget...

This club is really getting a lot of interest. What would it take for THR to maybe put some of these clubs that are attracting interest up a level so we can have threads within the club?
