The Marlin 39 Club

I'm going to say no problem since all 22lr bullets I'm aware of are lead or mostly so, even the plated ones.

I've shot thousands of plain ol' lead bullets in my 39s. The two brands that shoot the best in my Mountie are exposed lead. I rarely clean the bore and when I do leading is not an issue.

I have had leading in centerfire firearms. The cause was typically undersized bullets or (too) hard bullets pushed too slow or inadequate lubing. Two of those centerfires rifles have Microgroove barrels (30-30 and a 44 Rem Mag). Both would shoot lead bullets very well. The 30-30 w/ microgroove actually out shoots my 30-30 336CB with Ballard rifling. Even when I did get leading the shallow grooves made clean-up easy.

I realize that it's pretty late to ask this but why wasn't the "39 Club" used as a subfolder to 'rifle country' and assorted threads established within the club as a seperate section of the forum?

One way would allow discussion of various topics, each in it's own thread. This way is sort of a run-on set of minutes of a meeting in which new visitors are strained to catch up. It's now 31 pages long. It covers many things: sight preferences, trigger work, dry firing and the wonderful rifles themselves amongst I don't yet know what else as I've had time to only progress to page eight.

Does anyone else think that this was flawed at the outset by how it is arranged? ........I'm just sayin' :)

And hi! I've got two of 'em, one born in 1951 and the other in 1952. They are my third as I gave the first one I owned and bought in 1977 to my brother some 25 years ago. He died and noone would own up to knowing where that rifle was.

I've always prefered the look of the fat forearm of the 1950's issue to the skinnier versions on the later guns.

KenS, welcome to THR. :)

Admins and Mods have already decided on a format for the Forums. Club threads like this one are a more recent trend on THR. While fun, I would think having subfolders for each and every club thread created (and there are quite a few of them) would make for very cluttered site navigation. I, for one, like the current format.

Post pics of those 39's if you can. ;)

Welcome, KenS. :)

Bam is right: the word "club" in the title of this thread is really just a concept, not a sanctioned part of the forum. Some folks don't like them, and would rather they didn't exist. (The arguments for and against are long and complex, and I'd rather not debate them here. This thread is about Marlin 39's. However, since you're new and asked about "club", I'll explain briefly.)

This and some other threads with "club" in the title are just an experiment with a different kind of thread. Most threads address specific issues like stocks, ammo, sights, etc. They come and go fast, usually.

Some of us just wanted to experiment a bit with a little different kind of thread, a longer running thread to explore all aspects about a particular gun in one thread, where people interested in it could learn, share knowledge, even get to know each other a bit more, kind of like a ... well, club house. It's like Cheers, where everybody knows your name. (We even have nicknames.)

The mods and admins have been gracious to let us play with the idea, to see if it works. There are at least a few moderators who participate in various clubs. Another famous one - The 642 Club - started the trend. (Actually, that's it's second set of pages. When the first one reached 5000 posts, the mods created a new thread for continuation and left the old one for the archives.)

I agree, it can get daunting for some, because they get long, and for new folks, it's a lot of reading (even if hopefully worth it). But those of us that have been doing it for a while look at it like a little library of sorts that can be searched for particular topic (just see "search this thread" near the top of this page). And of course, folks are free to ask questions as they need/want to if they can't find what they want.

It's not an ideal arrangement, but it's just an attempt to do something different with what we've got (given limitations of software, the way the forum is set up (which is great, IMO]). We're all really happy to be part of THR, and that we can play a bit with an experimental concept.

Some of us are also toying with the idea of creating another blog or thread to "index" some of the topics in longer threads like this one. (It's on my already long list of things to do ... someday ... but my business is keeping me uber-busy these days.)

So, welcome in. Hope you'll hang out with us. And yes, pics are great.

:)

OK club, do we have any sort of consensus on which is more accurate, the old style Ballard cut rifling, or the newer Micro-Groove?

It's a tough one because many of the older Ballard rifled 39's have worn or abused bores and muzzles, while minty Micro-Groove rifles are plentiful.

Personally I can't tell any difference between the Micro-Groove rifles I had and the Ballard style 1950 I currently, (and forever after WILL) have.

It would be fun to do a real "Apples to Apples" comparison.

I only have internet wisdom to repeat- Where Microgroove is supposed to be better for a .22, but clogs with lead in a .44 barrel.

I do know that I've got three microgroove rifles, and they all shoot nice little groups if I do my part.

Wait!

What's this I hear?

Another shooting match between Ballard and microgroove?

But ... but ... we could cause the extinction of the 3x5 species.

<checks>

Oh, it's OK; they're not on the endangered species list.

Let's wipe 'em out in the interest of science!

I have Marlins with both Ballard and Microgroove though only MG in Rimfires. In centerfire rifles they both shoot equally well. In my 1895's with the Ballard Rifling an undersized cast bullet will lead the bore. A friend cast me some .457" bullets and they wouldn't even hit the paper at 50 yards. At 25 they were tumbling... :( Cast bullets sized .459-.461" shoot VERY well. http://www.grovestreet.com/jsp/onepic.jsp?id=1206746

Hey, can I join the club? I just bought an older Marlin 39a (no checkering or safety). Hell of a well made gun, I can't wait to shoot it this weekend.

No, membership is full, and there's currently a seven year wait list....:p

Nem, can you send him the memo?

Zinj, Bam is just messing around.

Glad you're here. Go shoot that thing and send us some pics.

Your membership card is in the mail.
And even USPS won't take 7 years.

Psst. Bam: what memo?

Heck, when you bought the rifle you joined the club. :)

Is it a regular 39a? My Mountie is so old...(hmmm, I sense the start of a series of painful jokes)...that it's labeled a 39a but has a straight stock with no checkering or safety. (well, they have safeties but I know what you mean)

I ask this question because the best way to answer it is to - SEND PICS!

Nem, don't be coy about the memo. We know you got one. Hint: it's not about Rule 303 (that's the Lee-Enfield club). It's about Rule 39.

Hi folks,
It has taken me nearly a week of off and on reading, but I finally made it through all 31 pages. I'm cross-eyed!:D I was going to ask for membership in this club, but noticed above that the roster is full. Do I need to take my 39's and go home, or can I stay and play awhile? I have 2 39A's with 24" bbls, and a recent purchase 39M with square lever. I had to dig it out of the safe to be sure what it is, and to hold it and fondle it....................never mind that last part. None of them have the cross bolt safety or checkering. The two A's are '79 and '80 models, the M is '77. Got in too late for the post card shootout, and too dumb to post pictures, so I'm just here.
I signed up quite a while back so I could get into the classified section. I look here nearly every day, but do most of my yakking on a couple of biker sites. Yeah, I'm biker trash too in case that makes a difference, Harley Wide Glide.

Yep, regular old 39a. SN is 192322XX, and it would be great if someone could give me an approx. date of manufacture (knowing me I probably missed a date code stamped on the gun though). Gun is nice and slick but not loose, and it also has the best figure in the wood of all the guns I own. I feel sorry for the guy who sold it, he must be having some serious seller's remorse at this point.

As requested, here are pics. I have to apologize for the T/C Classic with it, but I have heard that you need to show your "older" guns that you still appreciate them when you bring a new addition into the collection.

The lower gun. If you click on the thumbnail a larger version will be opened.

And it is 1981 DoB. It kind of surprises me it was made that early, as it already has an "Idiot Stamp" on the left side of the barrel.

Sorry Zinj,

Which one is the Marlin?

was a poor attempt at a joke.

I ended up doing the photobucket thing, which is to open an account at photobucket, imagebeaver, whatever. Upload your image & then use the picture icon to link to it. Works well.

In the pic it looks like the wood is a neat pattern, almost a crossweave.

I should take a better picture of mine since I've cleaned & polished the stock.

You guys are funny.

Zinj, nice gun.

Hawg, welcome in.

Hey, look: it's Thanksgiving "day".
(Even if only 34 minutes into it.
Some of us work nights.)

I guess I'll quit work now
(which has been non-stop
with no days off for nearly 4 months),
and get some sleep.

I'm thankful for sleep.

39 shooting contest?
What shooting contest?

(Dang, this neighborhood is infested with 3x5's. :uhoh:
Somebody needs to instigate a control program.)

Who knows what tomorrow will bring.
