And a wise man once said:

Or something like that:D

Just wanted to post a gratuitous picture of my 39's. :p

The top one is a 1966 Golden 39A Mountie. Dubbed the "R.J. Special" (a previous owner e-pencilled his name on the receiver :banghead:), I bought it for $200, cleaned it up, refinished the furniture, and mounted Skinner sights on it. That's the set-up I used for the post card match. ;) (Skinners have since been replaced by a vintage Weaver V4.5, however.)

The youngster on the bottom is a 1996 Original Golden 39-A, recently purchased NIB from another THR member for $350. It now wears the Skinners the Mountie originally had. When I first received this rifle, it seemed to have been damaged during transit. I shipped it back to Marlin, and they took care of everything under warranty. Wow.

If I wasn't before, I definitely am now a Marlin fan for life. :)

Oh ... yeah.

See, what I want is similar to the top one
in terms of barrel length, but with a pistol grip.

Why?
Because.
No other reason.
Just because.

For me, right now
(well, OK, asap ...),
that means 39A - 4.

$350 for a NIB model 39?

That's a SMOKING deal!
You know, I overlooked that detail when I first read Bam's post. (It's been an insanely busy week.)

Yeah, OK, I'm jealous.

$350? You #@$%%^&*#@! :fire:
How do you folks get such great deals!

:D

Man, I'll say nice collection.

What's the barrel length on that Top 1967 Golden 39A, Jay?

I expect 24", but it seems the ones in front are longer.
Is that just perspective or an optical illusion?

Thanks Gents. All the barrels are 24". The bottom one is my most recent buy. I was leaving a gun show when I spotted this on in a rack. The guy was selling those $2 Asian knives and swords, and a couple of BB guns. I asked him how much for the 39A, and he said $250. I asked him if it functioned correctly and he said "it should, it's only been out of the box a few times, and under a bed for 20 years." I looked it over, paid the man, and managed to keep from running out of the show. It's really a pristine rifle from 1966.

Man, you guys are passionate about these amazing guns, so much so that you convinced me early in this thread that I've got to buy one. I stumbled upon this "club" about a month ago while searching for recommendations on nice .22's. After spending days reading, I've got to attempt to join the club, and add my story.

About two months ago, my Dad and two brothers went out to shoot clay pigeons, as we do a couple of times each year. For fun, we brought along my father's Marlin automatic .22, and we had more fun plinking with it than we did shooting clays. I decided then that I need to buy my own .22.

I Googled .22's and came upon this club. I read, off and on, for about two days, until I had read it all. You guys have me salivating at the mouth for my own Marlin 39A Mounty.

So I went out to a gun dealer to try to find one, knowing how hard it would be to find a Mounty, and the first thing I learned was that I need a Firearms Ownership ID in my state. I filled out the application and mailed it to the State Police and now I wait...

and wait...

They say it takes about 30 days, but I applied for it, about 25 days ago, right before deer hunting season.

So, anyway, I have continued to search for the perfect rifle. I have been to every gun store I could find for 50 miles, and I have found some nice options. This is where I'm hoping to get some feedback from you guys.

At one store, they've got a '66 Golden 39A Mounty in very good condition for $275.00. It has a straight stock with some very minor fading and no checkering, and a small indentation on the hammer where I thing someone had a hammer extension. Based on what I've learned from you all, I think this is a very good find.

My other option is a 1897T for $400.00 which is in perfect condition. Unlike the '66 39A Mounty, this gun has an octagon barrel and it's straight stock is checkered. I think it was made in '97. It's a beauty.

The annoying part of this whole scenario is that I am at the mercy of the state to sent me my permit, so I can buy one of these guns before someone else does. I feel like Ralphy in the movie, "A Christmas Story", anxiously hoping for the delivery of a Red Ryder BB gun. Every day I peek into the mailbox for my ticket to lever action induced paradise, and the wait continues.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for such valuable information. You should all get a nice fat Christmas bonus from Marlin for the sales directly linked to this club.

And Nem, are you still without your 39? I can't believe that the guy who started all this bought a new rifle, used it twice, was unlucky enough to have the troubles you did, and has been without for months. Man, I hope you get her back soon.

Welcome to the club. If I were you I'd be begging to shop owner
with the Mountie to hold it for me. I'd pay more than that in a
heartbeat for another one.:D

Mine was a gift from the wife of a good friend that past away this
past year. I love the thing and it has become my favorite rifle. I
would never sell it.

Hope you get your ticket real soon and good luck with what ever one
you end up with. I think you will find you become very fond of the 39A
in a big hurry. Also there are a lot of know knowledge here in this
club if you happen to have a problem.

Welcome RRR!

Resistance is futile. You WILL be assimilated.

For fun, economy and practicality the 39 (in any variation) is tough to beat. I too am a Mountie enthusiast. I have two. Would buy another if I had the opportunity.

I have other nice rimfire rifles including a CZ 452 American that is a beautiful and very accurate rifle. I'm guessing that my Mounties get 10 times the ammo through them and if I go hunting with a rimfire, the Mountie is my choice.

Dude, you need to move to Missouri. Our government doesnt infringe on your gun rights as much as Illannoy does. Don't mean to hijack this thread, but good grief...what part of "shall not be infringed" don't they understand?

By the way...a 39 is on the acquire list.

Welcome to the club, and to THR!

It's really great (trust me: great) when new members come in with such fine stories. Thanks for sharing it with us.

As for that Mountie for $275. WOW! I'd pay that in 1/750 billionths of a heartbeat. May I suggest, head down to that store, and offer to put down a hefty (negotiable) deposit to hold the gun until your permit comes. Essentially, put it on layaway. Let them know you're serious about it, and that your permit is on the way.

You can't lose with that price. Even if you get it, and don't like it (highly unlikely),
you could sell it here and recoup your investment plus a few bucks.

(Also, condolences on that waiting time. I have to agree with ShowMe:
unless you've got a dream job there, may be time to think about another state.)

As for my beautiful 39, thanks for asking. No, still don't have her back yet. Have been overwhelmed at work (close to 70 hours this week; last full day off was in August) after 4 months of rebuilding/redesigning my business, I am dirt poor right now as a result (even Dec rent is not fully covered yet), and all this in a challenging economy approaching the holidays.

But I hope to get it back very soon. Will probably call about it this week (because I finally finished a big project that's been eating my lunch for two weeks, and have a bit more time ... this will only be a 50 - 60 hour week! :) )

Yeah, Frank makes a good point.

We're already calling you RRR when you may be preferred to be called
Red, Ryder or Ralph. (We're keystroke savers around here.)

Just let us know. ;)

Wow! Jayb, you're my hero, man! :D That Cowboy is singularly awesome.

Welcome to all the new guys. This place just keeps on gettin' better!

Just shot my new 39a w/ the Skinners on 'em. VERY accurate rifle! So glad I stumbled across 45Badger's listing....:p

0.096", the default aperture size. I find it's a pretty good all-around size. If you're wanting a target rifle, smaller would be better. If the rifle might be used for hunting, that's the smallest I'd go (field of view and all).
