You guys did it to me

Well, I was thinking it was time to get a 22 rifle and I started to look at what was available these days. My last 22 rifle was a 10/22 that I bought at K-Mart for $49. It had a nice walnut stock too. I came accross this thread and started reading. I got about 15 pages in and decided I needed a 39. I looked for a used one but could not find any. My local shop put me on a waiting list but said he may see one once a year.

I broke down and bought a new 39A last Saturday. I have not fired it yet because the weather has been pretty bad but can't wait. I have a good feeling about this rifle.

I also ordered a Williams FP Peep Sight for it. It is the one that mounts in the holes drilled for the scope mount. I Ordered it today direct from Williams. They don't have a picture of it though. Anybody have this sight? I have a Williams FP on my 1894 and love it.

Well, I hope I qualify for the club. I will take some pictures after I get my new sight and have shot the rifle.

Thanks for all the great info this thread has provided. You guys are the best.

Alde, welcome in. Glad you've joined us.

Yes, definitely keep us posted about what you think when you shoot. The action on the new one will be a bit stiff for a while, but will loosen up nicely with a few bricks of shooting.

I, too, started with a semi-auto as a kid. Remington Nylon 66. Loved it. Wish I still had it.

But my 39 is just a cut above. Just something about lever guns.

I have not fired it yet because the weather has been pretty bad ...
Dude, no kidding. Same here. (I see we're both in the Pac NW.) Lots of rain and amazing wind storms here over the last few days. Hurricane force winds over on the coast.

You folks in the northern interior should brace for a big one coming your way. :scrutiny:

Thanks

Thanks for the warm welcome. Most of my shooting has been with centerfire revolvers these last few years. I like both single action and double action wheel guns. It's hard to beat a high quality 22 for fun though. For 22's I also have a S&W 617 and a Ruger MK 2 Government Model with the 6 7/8" bull barrel. Talk about an accurate pistol. The Ruger is the most accurate handgun I have ever fired.

I probably won't get to try out my 39 until the 15th. That's too long but it can't be helped. I get a range day every other Saturday. Maybe next year I will try some grouse hunting with it. That will give plenty of time to learn the rifle and find what ammo it likes.

Now that's interesting. Grouse hunting with a .22.

I have never associated a .22 rifle with grouse hunting.
No criticism there, just displaying my own ignorance.
(I know little about grouse.)

When I think hunting with .22 (in my case now, that means 39),
I think squirrel (first, second & third place), and rabbits.

But the bigger question is this: what have members hunted with their 39s?

I hunt with mine.

Grouse, which are legal to hunt with rimfires here in WA, are my main quarry with my Marlin 39A Mountie. The season opens in September so it gives me an excuse to get out and walk around with my rifle, do some Deer & Elk scouting and throughly enjoy myself stalking grouse. It may be my favorite type of hunting. They aren't the most challenging game as they think they are invisible (close but not quite) and rarely go out of range of my 39 when spooked.

Admittedly I've shot more with my Ruger Single Six than my 39 mainly because I have it with me more often.

I'll also use my 39 to dispatch garden vermin like starlings on the raid or rats around the barn.

"... what have members hunted with their 39s?"

For me - squirrels, groundhogs, crows, and one mole.

The mole took a whole lot of patience and sitting vewy vewy quiet. One down, 20 to go.

I had a skunk in my sights one time, but didn't pull the trigger since I consider them friends. They do no harm and quite a bit of good around a farming area.

So far it has been only squirrels, rats at the dump and I can't help but remember one great hunt for the nobel 3X5. I got two of them in one day it must be some sort of record.:D

Squirrel and rabbit are the usual prey. I love using CB longs in my backyard to get my supper. CB longs in a 24" 39A are so quiet the neighbors don't even know I'm shooting a real rifle. The ones who hear think it's merely a BB gun or pellet rifle.

Interesting, didn't know that. Can you explain about the good they do, if you would? I'd appreciate it...

Please forgive my ignorance, I was raised in a small city.

I read crows as cows and was trying to think about how that worked.....

I must be getting a 39 soon, looks like just the 22 rifle i've been wanting.

My guess is they don't taste very good.

As for me, 3x5's are about all I have ever hunted with the mighty 39A. I had a squirrel in my sights once, but my daughter was home and she thinks they are "soooooo cute!!!" that I didn't pull the trigger. About a week later she tells me the cat has something in the yard, all I could find was a squirrel tail. I have a few pecan trees, so me and the local squirrels are not the best of friends. This year has been a bumper crop for pecans, the squirrels have beer bellies. :what:

Marlin 39

My name is Terry. For my 36th birthday my father gave me a Marlin Model 39 .22. This is the rifle I learned to shoot on and has GREAT sentimental value. I would like to learn more about when it was built, if possible. My father tells me he bought the rifle in or around 1951 (when he was sixteen) and it was used when he bought it. It is a lever action rifle. Under the lever are some markings that say “HS 17587.” Other than these markings, the only other markings say “The Marlin Firearms Corporation, New Haven ccnn. U.S.A. Pateneted 22 S L & LR.”

Any information that you can provide me would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time…Terry (Hillsboro, OR)

It's the things they eat that is helpful. They go after small vermin like mice, rats, and moles. But, more importantly, they eat lots of insects including black widow spiders, scorpions, grubworms (they're very good diggers), moths, etc., etc. I believe insects make up the largest portion of their diet. They also eat carrion if they chance to happen on it which is why the automobile is just about their number one enemy these days.

Question about Lyman 17 sight

I have read that the AHB .404 height is the correct replacement front sight for the 39A. I have a Marble's peep tang installed, which I am very happy with, but now that big gold bead front sight has to go! Do I need to measure my rifle, or can I just get the 17 AHB and assume it will fit?

Also, any recommendations on trigger jobs for a 39A? Is this something the local smith can do no problem, or is there someone out there (like Kivaari for SKS triggers) who is the best?

That could be it.

That could be the next contest:
Post it notes at 50 m.

Categories - to be decided:
  • 39A v 39M
  • glass v open
  • rest v free hand
  • squirrel on head v ... oh, wait ... :uhoh:
Extra points for pink post its?

Hi all,

Now I like that idea of a 50m shoot. I was thinking of something along the lines of 10 rounds off-hand at paper plates. We could shoot glass versus iron and M's vs. A's pretty easily.

The other idea could be to simplify and make it an Team A versus Team M shoot. We'd have to believe that the same distribution of irons and glass would happen. Then we take the top 1/4 scores of both categories and decide which team wins. Jag's probably still got the spreadsheet, so if we wanted to figure out a differential (handicap) for the M's if needed, we could.

We have lots of informal small bore shoots at my club, and that 39 of mine does as well as anything. I've never really thought of shooting a 39 in a fun sporter style 3 position, but I've done it this year.

The smallest thing shot was a squirrel. The biggest was a Ford F150. The worst was a mangy rabid cat in my backyard.

This is fun stuff, guys.

That's very interesting.

As an undergrad, I studied entomology.
In my first round of grad school, I studied mammalogy.

I never studied skunks, but I bathed my dog w/ tomato juice after she got sprayed by one.

Elaboration

Ok, after thinking about this for 30 seconds, more information is needed.

The F150 was an abandoned junker on a farm that had been a rifle target for many, many years. It was pretty well shot up before I showed up. So don't worry, all's well.
