I like that front sight! About the only complaint I have with my 39 is the difficulty in seeing the white dotted front sight in low light.

I'm going to go looking for one of those.

I have the same Williams rear sight as you - works like a champ.

Oz,

Nice sight. I'd be willing to try that myself.

At this point I'm running a Skinner rear sight with a factory bead. I like the bead pretty well with stock sights but not with aperture.

I've been thinking about swapping out front sights but keep the Skinner rear sight.

Dr. Skinner makes a post sight, so does AO but I'm not crazy about ghost rings.

Anyone try other front sights?

Aus (Oz), welcome in. Nice to have a member from down under.

Please tell us stories of the 39 in the outback.
_____________

Sorry to be distant for a few days ... big work push for me into next week.

No, still haven't gotten my 39 back ... this week ... ?

Can I join?

I can't believe I just found this place! I have 3 model 39's, a 1950, a 1968, and 1988 AS. Currently looking for any other version I don't have already, especially a Mountie.
So what do I have to do for initiation into the club? A little 39 porn maybe? That could be arranged...:D

Well, gotta get back to reading. 38 pages will take awhile.

Happy New Year to all!

Au, welcome to 39-ville and THR. Glad you found us.

Your initiation is complete: just posting does that.

We never turn down 39-porn, however. :D

Happy reading. Hope you find things of value to you back there.

And likewise, happy new year to all.

hey i am glad to find everyone here! i own a 39a golden trigger for many years and love it. i would like to put a receiver sight on it but would rather pay for a used and not abused one than a new one. i live in kansas. anyone else from here

Wow; two new members to both 39-ville and THR in one day.

We're cooking with gas, here. ;)

Welcome in, Ksyodeldog.

(OK, what's your preference for a knickname? Dog? Kansas, maybe?)

There's been a lot of discussion on this.

Here's my thoughts:

Will Cerberus respect all that Marlin stood for, and produce better examples of the traditional rifles we love so much?

Doubtful. If anything changes it will be dedicated to making as much profit per rifle as possible.

But what about this...

Cerburus is dumping LOTS and LOTS of money into getting setup to make and sell Evil Black Rifles.

Clearly, these guys seem to think that the lights are green for us to be buying them.

Could it be that there is something about their huge budget that has the ability to sway the actions of those in power?

I really hate the idea that our Hillarys and Obamas would be so easily bought out, but if it stops all the gun grabbers it just might be a good thing.

Maybe.

The idea of a poorly-beadblasted finish on a Remington 336, made with a stamped receiver, with scrap wood and pressed checkering, for $599, makes me cringe, but its what I expect from Big Green now.

Or maybe they'll have the 1894 made in Russia and finished like a cheap set of jackstands, like the Spartans.

Ugh.

On the bright side, maybe Remington will dump their repulsive imported .22 bolt guns.

Re: Cerberus,

What's the profit margin on a 39A NIB? That's what matters.

Yodel,

Welcome!

Sights have been lately a topic of interest here in the club. What kind of sights did you have in mind - top mount, side mount? Field shooting or target?

(I'm assuming Yodel is a good moniker. You can call me Slugless, Slug, or Slug-boy, I answer to all three :))

yeppem, dog would be fine better than some of the things i have been called in my thirty years of married bliss i am disabled and just thought i would revisit my old rifles i am also fixin up my old model 150 winchester lever that my son refinished the stock on he is now on his third tour in iraq in the USMC plan on handing down my marlin one day to him.

Can you get one of these in steel? You mentioned getting an older one & IIRC these are steel sights.

Friend of mine got a Lyman for his 39A. Rested the rifle against a scrub oak. Rifle fell over on its side.

The Lyman won't keep zero any more.

I bought him a Skinner as a thank you for helping me out w/ a bunch of stuff. He's happy with it.

I'm assuming the fact that the Lyman is aluminum was the problem and a steel sight would be more rugged. A steel side mount would be nice.

If Remington offers a 39 Mountie would you buy it?

I'm hoping the quality remains the same and the manufacturing stays in the USA. I also secretly wish they'd offer the 1895 Cowboy in a 20" barrel and start making 336 Texans again.

If Remington offers a 39 Mountie would you buy it?

Remington makes some nice .22s: the 552 and 572. They just don't market them at the unwashed masses.;)

The problem I have with Remington is not just the plastic, it's the price.

I just looked at a new Model 7. Light, well-balanced, great fit, compact for bushwhacking. I really want to like it. I'd love to hunt with a gun set up like a Model 7.

But for $800 retail, the metal finish is UGLY, the walnut is bottom-grade, and the #$%^ safety doesn't lock the bolt! Bushwhacking with a bolt that pops open whenever you brush by something is not my idea of improving my odds in the field.

To get a gun worth $800, I'd have to order something for $2000 from the Custom Shop, and then add an aftermarket safety.:(

That said, I think Marlin could stand doing special orders. People might just pay for some of them...

If Remington offers a 39 Mountie would you buy it?
After thinking about that for a while,
I'll add that even though Remlin may "own" Marlin,
it'll still be Marlin craftspeople that would build that Mountie.

And if it wasn't built to the standards that Annie would approve of, they'd hear from us.

:D

I'm a new guy and this is my first gun. I inherited it from my Grandpa last year before he passed away and just finally retrieved it from Grandma's house over Christmas vacation. Compared to you guys I'm quite ignorant on the subject of guns but in researching what I had I found this thread and have just finished reading all 38 pages.

Mine was made in '72. Here's a picture for the heck of it:

I can appreciate fine engineering and craftsmanship regardless of where it is found and this gun has definitely got a lot of it. I hope this will be something I can pass down to one of my kids some day.

I haven't been able to shoot it yet but am planning on going to the range with some friends from work soon.

"The part number for the fire sight is 56440."
Thanks 39a in aus! I'm going searching for it as we type.

JamesMcD - Welcome to THR and the 39 Club. :)
You've got a beauty there, very nice wood. And you got an extra bonus with the sling.

Oz - found it fairly easily at Midway. I had to click on quite a few Fire Sights before I found the right one; they don't list them by Williams part number.

Before I order though, would you take a look at yours and see if it goes into the dovetail in the screwed on ramp or is there a dovetail in your barrel?

I checked the height of the existing bead assembly and it seems to be the same as the Williams - .290". (They list about 20 different heights.)

[Edit]
Nevermind - I can see in your photo that it goes into the dovetail in the ramp.
