I gave my Dad his new rifle today. :)

It was fun to surprise him a gift like that. Its pretty hard to surprise him with gifts.

The timing was pretty good also. (and amusing.:p. )

The other night at dinner he was telling me how he finally kept the bunnies out of his yard (they were killing his lawn) by putting chicken wire in strategic places.

Well, when I dropped the rifle off I look out into his yard.....yep 2 bunnies.

I don't give them long.

I told my Dad they were out there and he says " WHAT!!!??......Why those little bastards!"

That made me laugh. :D

I've been reading this thread for over six months now. (The first couple months was simply to catch up)

Today is my 30th birthday. It is also the day I join the Marlin 39a club. For my birthday, my fiancee gave me a brand new Marlin 39a.

As I am at work, I cannot post the pictures yet. These will follow later tonight.

I love the dark walnut- such an elegant weapon.

I can't wait to get it to the range. (Probably have to wait till tomorrow as my Fiancee has plans for tonight.)

Wow! You definitely have a "keeper" there, that's for sure.!

Oh, and your fiancée sounds pretty nice also. :)

Welcome to the 39 Club, I can guarantee you'll love the rifle as soon as you shoot the first shot. Take her to range with you, maybe she'll want to get one for herself. Nothing wrong with having his n' hers 39's.

New Guy

I'm one of those who has coveted a Marlin 39 since I first saw one when I was 12 in the early '50s. Finally bought a new one last year. Met all expectations after a few false starts. Looking now for an older Mountie.
Great forum here with lots of info!

Fella's;

Here in Great Falls Montana, ran across a new model 39 in the Big R store. $499.00 new in the rack.

Great idea, Mine has a Golden Boy she shoots and I have my 39A. The Henry is a nice rifle, I prefer the Marlin but girls like "pretty" guns, or mine does.

Marlin model 39A

This is my Marlin 39A. Pictures are poor I know. Presentation grade wood from the factory but redone by former Browning gunsmith Art Isacson in Hillsboro, Mo.

Magazine article - Marlin Golden 39A

The July issue of Rifle magazine has a very good article on the 39 by John Haviland. He does some comparing of a new one to a borrowed 1950 model.

Very informative and worth reading.

Just a heads up, sorry if this has been mentioned already, didn't see it if it was.

just wanted to say... hey -I just got me a used original golden 39a today . Pretty cool to see how many people dig it. I dig it too. First time in ten years I've ever posted anything. Peace

Rod,

We're glad you posted first here.
Hang out. Pretty chill crowd
who appreciate 39.

Comin' up for air
in an intense business time.
(Pretty sure I'm preaching to th' choir ...)
___________

Been thinking again about getting said 39
cut down (barrel wise) to the length
of the 1894C ...

Just something about carbines ...

Rodbinkc: That may be your first post but now we expect a range report, pictures, hunting tales and of course entries in our friendly rimfire competitions.

So far just MalH, JohnMcl and me are the only 39 entries for the June match. Fast Frank is shootin' today (hopefully) but I'm not sure if he's shooting his 39 or the tack drivin' Marlin model 60 or something else or all of the above.

<sigh> I'll miss this one, too. :(

Crucial time in the bidness for the next three months.

(Nearly went under last month, but now have a new business plan that's looking most excellent.
We've already turned it around, now must stabilize and grow it during summer,
traditionally our most challenging business season ...
but with hard work, I can do it ...
then, I can go shooting again ... :)

I plan to give my 39A a good, long overdue session this holiday weekend. Looking forward to it!

Just pulled my 39a straight stock mountie 20" with an L serial number(1954) with a Bushnell Banner 4x. Had it since '55'. I think I bought it from western auto, if any remember that. The scope was purchased sometime in the '60's Was the first purchase with my paper route money The Akron Beacon Journal was the paper, don't know if it's around anymore. Of all the guns I own, maybe a dozen or so, this is the one that evokes the memories. Many a day was spent with this gun and a box of 500 winchester yellow box super X lubaloy rounds. Accurate? fagetaboudit. It seems I do this about every 5 years, check it over, wipe it down and put it back.

I sure am glad I stumbled across this forum. I just bought a new 39A and only have about a week before our Australian gun laws allow me to pick it up. I can't wait to try it out on the range the following weekend.

Hi Queenslander - another Aussie with a 39A - good to hear! I picked up a new one a few weeks ago and have barely put it down! :)

I don't know if I like waiting for my new 39A or not. Only 2 days before I am allowed to pick it up. I am having a lot of fun but the anticipation is killing me.

Yesterday, I had to do something for relief. I hadn't yet received word that my permit to acquire was completed. I have always found the gun licencing staff in Queensland government good to deal with. I knew it was getting close for my paper work to be completed. I phoned them yesterday and told them that I would be going down to the capital on Monday (I live in the country about 3 hours away) and asked how long I would have to wait. They assured me that my paperwork will be done on Monday ready for me to pick up my Marlin. It is unusual for a government department to be so cooperative - but they are.

So far I have ordered a skinner sight for my Marlin 39A. It has already arrived from the USA. It's great to get such quick service and at the same price internationally as in the USA (no postage costs). I also have a mount for a scope and a Weaver fixed x4 shotgun scope for it (bought at an incredible special price from Nantchez in the USA), to be used if my tired old eyes are unable to make use of the skinner. I also have the Marlin 39A video on its way to me and the takedown book on the 39A (bought on ebay). And - I have printed all 63 pages of these Marlin 39A club threads. It is a volume on its own. I am now trying to go through it and make up an index. It is full of valuable information.

The extra good part - this time next week I will on the range using my Marlin. This is almost heaven. I hope next week will be heaven. I feel like a kid again waiting for my Christmas presents to be opened.:D

I finally have my Marlin 39A. It is a beautiful rifle. So far I have only played with it. I am surprised at the smoothness of the action and the lightness of the trigger pull (there is no trigger creep at all). From all the reading, I had expected some problems in those areas with a new 39A but that hasn't eventuated. The action appears smooth and the trigger is firm but doesn't appear too heavy. Maybe I will have a different opinion once I get it to the range and use the rifle, but I doubt it. Maybe it is simply a case of expecting them to be worse because of all that has been written when new 39A's have been compared to the smooth action on the Henry's and the trigger pull on older 39's. Maybe it is all relative and I am lucky I don't have another lever action to compare mine to.

I initially fitted a Skinner sight to the Marlin. It looked like it was part of the rifle. Unfortuately, unless I wear my glasses, my eyes have trouble seeing the front sight. And if I am going to use it for hunting, I don't like to walk through the bush with glasses on (my glasses are those ones that have a variable focus depending on where you are looking - I lose my balance easily if I am wearing them and move about). I could probably get away happily with using the skinner at the range with glasses on, but not for hunting without the glasses - and I want to be able to practice consistently with the same setup for both events. It is nothing to do with the Skinner sight, just my poor eyesight.

As much as I didn't want to do it, I eventually fitted my fixed (x4) Weaver shotgun scope. I'm glad I did. The optics are crystal clear and because of its small size it doesn't appear to have much effect on the balance or weight of the rifle. My tired old eyes are happy with this scope and rifle setup. I am also happy with the appearance of this scope. If any lever action looks made for a scope it is the Marlin. The rifle looks great with this little scope on it.

I probably wasted a small amount of money on the sight base. I paid $50 Australian for a base and rings one piece that was specifically made of the 39A. I didn't realise that a different base came with the rifle that allows you to use your own rings. I did happen to have a spare set of BKL rings that could have fitted onto this base.

The wood on my rifle has a very nice grain to it. The only minor blemish I could see is that the metal to wood fit could be better in a few places. I can't wait to get to the range next Sunday.

Congratulations on your purchase Queenslander!

It is a great and fun rifle to shoot! I dont think you wasted money on the scope mount. Some have had problems with the one that comes with the rifle from what I have heard. But also I recommend shooting using the Iron sights also for some additional fun.

Also when you go to the range, be sure to try various types of ammo. Rifles tend to work better with one brand over anothe. My rifle likes CCI and Federal premium. But whenever I use Winchester loads, I have extration problems. My friends rifle has almost an opposite problem with federals lol.

Have fun though it shoots great!
