Nematocyst, I'm glad for your reply. I was wondering if I was asking one of "those" questions that everyone else knew the anwer to and I was the only one who didn't know.

I just took delivery on a 1966 Marlin 39A in 100% condition. It may have been unfired. Absolutely no blue wear on the hammer sides or lever. I am waiting on delivery of a 1946 or 1945 (maybe 90-95 %). The serial number starts with a C. I read in a post that a capital C was a 1945 and a small c was a 1946. I won't know which it is until it gets here. Can any one confirm this large C small c business? Thanks. I am looking forward to playing with these rifles. I have many other types of guns but these will be my first 39A's. I'm glad I found this forum. Oh, any suggestions on ammo. I have used CCI CB shorts before in my yard on squirrels which are damaging my pecan trees, pear trees, and house but I don't find them very accurate....I use them for the low noise factor.

Welcome to the club!

3 of my 4 model 39's like the Aguila SE Subsonic. It is pretty quiet out of the 24" barreled models, I've shot it indoors without realizing my I wasn't wearing my hearing protection... Much better accuracy and less expensive than the CB shorts and CB longs.
 
The year 1945-46

Does anyone know about the capital C being 1945 and the small c being 1946 in the serial number? Thanks.
 
alcalde - I haven't heard or read anything about a small c ever being a prefix for Marlin firearms. According to the Marlin Collectors site, a large C is for 1946, but they don't mention a small c. Even the letters A and B were not used by Marlin for 1944 and 1945. I think 'B' covered a range of dates in the '20's and 30's, but not sure.

You might have to contact Marlin for better info.

I don't think that's valid due to it being too confusing.
The vast majority of people wouldn't know to make a distinction, and there'd be too many rifles with the"same" serial number.
As far as anyone would be concerned, the number would simply start with A "C".

In any case, factory records show that "C" numbers were made in 1946.
What 39's that were made in 1945 still had the color case hardened receiver.
 
Pre-A breechbolt

just came back from the range where the breechbolt on my 1927 Pre-A
M39 broke.

Anyone have a source?

That's going to be tough.
I'd suggest first calling Marlin to see what versions will fit a model that old.
Better to spend a phone call then blow money on a bolt that can't be used.
I'd suspect that Marlin might be the best bet to have a new bolt fitted, and possibly, they might have compatible bolts.

Wisner's has some good pictures of Marlin bolts through the years, so that may be a help:

In those days, bolts were at least partially fitted, so you may need pro help installing one even if you can find one that's compatible.

Checked several places so far no luck, Wisner's opens in 40 minutes and will check with them. One on Gunbroker I'm bidding on but not 100% sure it's right. Will try to get it anyhow. Glad I re-read this post, have to call Marlin now.

Well, I have two coming from auction sites, don't know if they are the right
one or not, have one other guy looking into it (has a bunch doesn't know
what they are). The pics on the auction sites were awful, but I have to get
this one shooting again (was supposed to go on it's first hunt with me
tomorrow). Just put a sling on bro's boring scoped 10/22 for the hunt. I hope
to keep it on my shoulder and use 62 yo Iver Johnson target revolver unless
they are all long shots.
 
I just went through my Dad's 1952 39A, was in pretty sad shape, rusty, jamming, missing and broken parts. I installed new ejector assembly replaced mag tube mount, firing pin, missing bullet guide and missing finger lever spring, replaced several missing or cammed out screws, added a front site hood and gently cleaned as much rust and crud off as I could off without removing any finish. Looks like a worn old soldier almost ready for inspection and runs like a top, 50 smooth rounds, zero failures and solid.

Presented it to Dad this morning, at 86 he ran the lever like a young man and grinned "it's like new". So ..... I'm trying not to drool all over the place and I gently hinted that should he want to sell it I'm interested. It quickly disappeared to his bedroom... go figure. LOL!

Here's a pic, my 77 on top and his 52 below. The rifles of course are equal in length but due to my poor photography skills I fisheyed the shot and it's huge. I think I like his better than mine... dang!

I am waiting on the two purchased thru the auctions. The third guy says he
has them but wants $79 plus shipping for it (I paid $57.75 and $49 ea for the
first two, lousy auction pics and I didn't know about the 4 types until after
buying the first). The third guy went on vacation so I won't consider him until
I get the first two.

Did you know this?

Wisner's and one other person on another forum stated that the current bolt
from Marlin can be fitted by a gunsmith to an earlier gun.

I would like to keep a good vintage bolt for this rifle (1927) but think I will
install a current one since I really enjoy shooting this one.

Just added a 1977 Model 39A golden, in good shape about 85% on both metal and wood, shoots like a dream and my only problem is that both my boys want it. Now I have to come up with a couple more for them! (But hey at least they have good taste!)
 
Yeah,

boys and M39 = perfect match.

I would be buying a backup if I wasn't already buying
other guns this month.

First auction bolt came in today, looks good, a little clean up
and I will try it out this weekend (pic wasn't sharp and took a chance
on it, looks identical to my broken one, minus the fact it's one piece
instead of two).

I only shoot std vel in this but because I like shooting it so much I need
a spare bolt (I will wait to see what the second auction one looks like
before purchasing the expensive one). Then after I get the guns squared
away this month I will look at putting a modern bolt in.

I only have one Marlin now, but I'm planning on getting a 39A, right now all I have is just a safe Queen-1897 Annie Oakley that I love to take out and look at every so often. NIB and staying that way.
 
Txhillbilly, You have better self discipline than I. I'd shoot it but getting a shooter Marlin shouldn't be too difficult. I can't seem to walk away from one if I have money in my pocket.

Post some pictures of your Annie.
 
As soon as I get a digital camera I will post some,but all I have is a 35mm. I just can't seem to keep up with all the new fangled inventions that come out.
I still don't know what a mp3 is,and don't want too. The only reason I have a laptop is so I can get loads to haul with my truck.:confused:
