Here are some photos of my Model 39. Could anyone tell me how you rate the blueing and condition?

Thank you. DP

A walk in the woods with my 39

With the snow gone from my property I had the perfect excuse to bug out to my property for a few days and do a little work on my cabin. Of course the 39 joined me on a number of walks and fired a number of magazines worth at various targets - knots on logs, scrap wood, soda cans, Ponderosa Pine cones...

Getting the framing inspection for my cabin was the primary "excuse" to bug out to my property but Turkey hunting and a chance to take my 39 for a walk in the woods iced the cake.

I didn't manage to get a good picture of a very nice Moose on my property but I did take a picture of his tracks (a few days after the fact). I'd love to find that dude's sheds. Moose amaze me - such a huge gangly creatures - seems like God put them together with leftover parts - and they seem to thrive in some tough environments. I'll be back there in a few weeks and hopefully I can get a picture of him munching on the red Birch down by the creek.

I gave the CCI Small Game Bullet a try on this trip. I like the shape of the bullet - nice flat point and meplat. It didn't seem to be as accurate as the Federal Bulk ammo this Mountie seems to favor - under field conditions and positions. I'll take it to the range and see what it will do from the bench and over the chronograph and report back.

I just bought a '56 39A, which is the second Marlin 39 I've bought in the last year directly as a result of stumbling across this thread. The other Marlin 39 I bought was a 1897 Texan. I think this was a special edition similar to the Mounty or 39M, but the 1897 Texan has an octogon barrel. Based on my limited research, it was made in the late 1990s but I'd sure like to know more about the model if anyone can help.

Desert Plinker, I'd say your 39 rates A-1. Beautiful rifle. I have one that looks just like it except it has a Lyman Peep on it. I never have seen a bad looking one. James

About the Marlin 39, I saw one on Gunbroker the other day asking $1,000. It wasn't near as nice as the ones we have. James

advice and help

I own a 1954 Marlin 39a. It hasnt been cleaned in some time I am guessing. Its my grandpa's gun and hasnt seen the light of day in years.

My first question is how do I go about cleaning it or do I need to?

Also I read that its drilled and tapped for reciever sights, anyone recommend using one and if so what kind? Also is there anyway to mount any other type scope or sight without drilling or tapping that might mess with its condition?

I have bought from these guys before for other stuff and notice they have some interesting accessories but wasnt sure if I could make use of any of it without messing up the condition of the gun.

http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.914

Finally is there anyplace I can get the manual? Preferably a digital scan.

Anything else I should know about this rifle? The best ammo, etc... Any additional advice?

Thank you for any help anyone can provide.

Marlin 39 golden

great rifle i got mine over 30 years ago,my sons and i shot thousands and thousands of rounds through it.While my sons were growning i wanted to buy them each a marlin 39 golden, when i saved the money we went to the local gun shop to order the rifles while we were there i let the shop owner talk me in to getting 2 Win.9422 with the large lever, as time went on we did not like the Win.9422 it shot ok and looked ok but we liked the marlin 39 best so i sold the two Win.9422 and orderd 2 marlin 39 golden. LEARN A LESSON FROM ME WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT DONT LET ANYONE CHANGE YOUR MIND!!!!!!!

It's always a good idea to clean a rifle that hasn't been cleaned or lubed in some time. It's probably dirty, and the lube has probably dried out.
Here's a link to a online manual. You can also contact Marlin and they'll send you a free one:

Here's an exploded view or the 39A:

If you clean the barrel, pay attention to the bit about locking the ejector down.
Also, MAKE SURE you have the hammer cocked before attempting to separate or assemble the receivers.
I recommend using a quarter to unscrew the receiver bolt. A screwdriver often chews up the wide slot.

To clean, remove the bolt and and use a toothbrush and a little solvent to scrub the bolt assembly and the inside of both receiver sections.
Lube with your favorite lubricant and reassemble.
Remember to unlock the ejector before assembly.

Depending on the age, the rifle is probably drilled and tapped for both a scope and a receiver sight.
The top of the receiver will have two holes for a scope mount, one at the very front and one at the rear. Be careful NOT to unscrew the center-front screw. It holds the upper cartridge guide in place.
There may be two screws on the rear of the receiver. These are to mount a peep rear sight.

I am truly green over your gorgeous property, JustsayMo. Brings back memories of growing up in the country to this now city-dweller.

Just checking in on you guys.

Anyone get a NIB 39A yet to see what kind of manual it comes with?

Yippeee, I can now become a member of this club. I just bought a new 39A Golden and mounted a 4x scope on it. man what a shooter! I did have to modify the hammer strut because of FTF issues, but all seems well now.

thank you!

dfariswheel thank you very much for the helpful reply. I am going to attempt to clean it or have it cleaned at my local gunshop here in town as soon as I can.

I plan on posting a pic here soon.

39 Century LTD.

I picked up a 39 Century LTD. a few weeks back. I was testing it out and I noticed that it would not feed any rounds at all. After playing with it for a while I noticed that the lever was out of spec and was binding against the cartridge carrier thus causing the carrier to not go all the way down. So it was blocking the rounds.

I could not find the correct lever for this model which is the squared straight lever so I ordered a rounded straight lever like on a lot of the mounties. After replacing the lever the rifle feeds perfectly now.

One thing I noticed though is there is a gap between the lever and the receiver. I looked at a bunch of pictures of other mounties and some appear to have a gap like this and others don't. Is this normal/common? Also anyone know where to find the correct style lever? Marlin did not have any nor does Numerich.

Here are some pics:

Before with original lever:

Here is my Marlin 39a

Can anyone tell me if this is indeed a 1954 model? The serial number starts with and L but it appears to look different than other photos I have seen of that years model. Or is this not a 39a?

Bonedigger! Welcome to the club! I was so happy when I was able to "join". How does the rifle shoot for you?

One of the most satisfying rifles I have.

trueseeker76

You have a 39-M "Mountie" carbine. It's the carbine version of the rifle.

The "L serials were made in 1954.

excellent thank you again! ...I have been doing lots of internet searching trying to find that out. Mine has a straight stock and 20inch barrel, but since it doesnt say "Mountie" on the barrel but does say 39a I was confused... apparently there are other straight stock models without it printed on the barrel.

Anyone else having trouble finding ammo these days? Walmart's cabinets are always bare.

Another question based on those pics am I able to mount a peep sight on it or any other type of sight? If so how? Cant see well from the pics but the barrel has 4 screw on one side by the rear sight. Curious if I can scope this gun or not. I dont want to modify it from stock if I can help it.

Thanks!

By the way Dfariswheel you have to be the foremost expert on these guns because every website I came across for an answer it was posted by you haha.

You can mount a peep using the two smaller screw holes in the upper right quadrant,

Nice Mountie...I've got a similar vintage 39A that has been slimmed(wood) and trimmed(barrel 18") and I got it out a couple of weeks ago for it's first shoot.....NICE!

I will be mounting a peep for sure most likely a Lyman...

Thanks for the info. Mine has been in the family...my grandfather gave it to me recently and it hasn’t seen the light of day in decades. I have yet to shoot it.

Beautiful Marlin rifle you have. That looks like the same age as mine. I love the photo and how the gun is exactly as wide as the tree stump.

While searching I found scan of a letter from Marlin. Looks Marlin did make some pre 60's models tapped for a scope.

I shoot lefty & have been looking for a nice 22 long gun. I had a 10/22 that just was not reliable -- went through a ton of factory mags & no luck -- checking out several options but I keep coming back to the Marlin 39a. I picked up a 336 late last year so this would be a nice addition.
This looks like a nice source for info & pics!!

I did have a couple Q's -- I've been told top eject is the way to go on these guns -- true? false? doesn't matter? Also, how do they compare to the Henrys? Golden Boy, Frontier etal?

10-ring, the only choice in a 39A is side eject, so I guess the answer is "it doesn't matter". :)

My personal opinion, the fit, finish and feel of a 39A is better than any other lever .22 out there by any manufacturer.
