I also would like to be part of this crowd. I bought my first 39A, a Mountie in 1962. It shot great and I liked it, but sold it because I needed college money.
My latest was purchsed last year, a new model that is pretty, but needed some TLC to work properly. I still like it and shoot it with either a Williams 5D, a Simmons Red Dot, or a Bushnell 4x scope. The scope seems to help me hit critters better and it's not very heavy.

ArmedBear, I like the spray on Silicone, it remains slick when dry and doesn't attract grit or dust. I'll use BoeShield if I'm going to be in the weather for an extended period.

If you are somewhat skilled with a torch you could heat up that lever loop and enlarge it. Swany over at the Marlin Owners site converted a PG to a straight stock and straightened the lever that way. It turned out great. I don't see why it wouldn't work reshaping the lever loop in reverse.

So, today I am doing some indoor target asassination and my 39a will not cycle the CB shorts I am using. It cycled over half the box last time. Now, it's choking, I did take it down and clean it since then.
Any ideas? It seems to want to cram two or three in at a time.

Sounds like we need to put out the bat signal to dfaris. I'm sure he'll have the right answer or at least know how to diagnose it.
My guess would be that it might have something to do with magazine cutoff, limit thingermahjob (technical term).

Of course I figured when it happened that something inside exploded and my rifle was ruined for ever.
But, I took it apart and found that the screw holding the magazine cutoff, limit thingermahjob was loose. Two turns on a screw driver and it is cycling gun food like new!
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Well here is another old coot that loves Marlins. I just had a birthbay on the 8th and i will make it in before anniversary..... I have 4 marlins and my first 39-A will be here this week--- I hope. it's a 1961 model. I have also been looking real hard at a very nice 1950 too.....

Here is my Marlin 39A "transitional" model made in 1939. This was the first year made and the only year with this pistol grip shape. I got it about 15 years ago and it is still a wonderful shooter! This one will never be sold.
Edit: I haven't been through all 107 pages(!) yet, but might this be the oldest 39A in the thread? The serial number is just under 1690.

had my 39 returned from the gunsmith last night, trigger job to become a crisp trigger set at 1.3 kg (2.7 lbs), paid 25 Euro.
Dry firing (with the necessary precaution not to damage the firing pin) is great,
Installed a Nikko Stirling 2-7 * 32, mil dot illuminated reticle I already got of my Anschutz.
I will take 'her' to the range tomorrow and keep you posted on accuracy

Last Monday nights indoor 50 foot shoot at chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams, I got 5 in a row on the Pigs on paper. First time indoor since starting this sport a year ago. To bad I don't get a 5 pin for that mild accomplishment! We will be moving outdoors late next month where we compete every Thursday Eve with tournaments every 6 weeks. I'm all pumped up! I'm on my way to get me some 5 pins this summer!

Does anybody know what year Marlin started putting the white spacer in the butt plate and the cap and spacer on the grip on the 39-A???
I am looking for what should be and not be on a 1950 and a 1961... Type of finish, colors, spacers, sights, anything...

In celebration I thought I'd shoot a (3x5 Jag's official target for the inaugural 39 club postal match target..) Birthday Card
If you squint real hard you can make out the 39 on the cards. It is a lot harder than it looks. Took me several tries (which is fun
) to get something that resembled a 39 on the card.
Way back when Captain Hardy used his Marlin 1897 to draw
After trying it myself, it is a LOT harder than it looks. It did give me an idea for a match though ....
I also wanted to thank all the enablers that have inspired me to not pass up a 39/1897 if'n I had enough jingo in my pocket to walk away with it...
I've enjoyed them all.
Of course I haven't gone as overboard as this guy... yet.
When Nem started this club three years ago I bet he had no idea what he was kicking off or the passion, loyalty and reverence so many have for this model Marlin. Heck, it's not only "My Favorite Marlin" it mighty be my favorite firearm.
It is my most used firearm and I can't think of many outdoor experiences that can match the pure enjoyment of hunting for Grouse on a beautiful Autumn morning with my Model 39.

Hello all. Just got my first 39 this past weekend. As a kid I could never seem to be able to afford one, and actually was really into handguns and centerfire rifles. I've shot them and liked them, but can't say I ever owned one. Life is a bit slower for me now, and a good .22 rifle seems like just the ticket for some off-duty fun.
I was leaving a gun show and walking to my car on Sunday when I saw an elderly gentleman who worked at the exhibit hall taking some guns out of his trunk. I walked over to say hello, and spied a Marlin Model 39A with what looked like surface rust on it, a leather sling that was disconnected at one end, and an old steel tubed scope hanging off of it by a loose mount. Overall things looked bad.
But when I picked it up and handled it, I got a feeling that this old girl could be cleaned up and put back in service. He told me to make him an offer, to which I replied "$150". He wanted another $25 for the scope which was falling off, and I gave in and said ok. I got it home and spent several hours cleaning it up. Leaving a coating of Break-Free on the metal for a few hours allowed me to get rid of the surface rust and also cleaned up the tube of the scope, which turned out to be a very old Weaver K-4! Surprisingly, the glass was still clear and crisp when I cleaned the lenses.
My new/old rifle turns out to be a 39A Golden Mountie probably made in 1969. It now looks much better, and a bit of plinking on my range confirms that it feeds well, even with CB caps, and is accurate, or at least as accurate as it needs to be for fun. I was shooting old golf balls with it at distances out to maybe 60 yards with some old Winchester Wildcats. Amazingly, the scope did not require re-sighting because it never came out of its rings.
I feel like I got a little bit of history for $175 and some elbow grease, and I think I am really going to enjoy shooting this rifle.

MO, I get my paper back this Monday. Our leader takes home every week to verify against what we scored in the book. We put $.50 in the pot every week and the one that shoots most above his average, gets the pot. I'll take a picture next week and see if I know how to put on this forum. I might have to frame it too!! For posterity.
