dstates, sounds like the gunsmith did not have enough experience at his craft. I paid $50.00 to have my FTE and FTF fixed at my local Gander Mountain gunsmith 3 years ago. I shoot 200+ rounds a week with mine year round for the past 2 years. Again, there are gunsmiths and gunsmiths. You have to find the right one with knowledge. Sorry to hear you have to go through the ordeal that many have. Nothing like not having your 39A with you. Hope Marlin comes through quicker than you think! Yes, it is fustrating not to have your 39a working properly right out of the box! I'm no mechanic either. I even take mine to the gunsmith every November to have knocked apart to clean and lubricate mechanism. When you get yours back, shoot up a storm!!

model 39

Hello all, I have been reading some of the posts about this rifle and decided to join in. I recently inhereted a model 39, it has a layman 438 field scope on it. I found a web site that said the gun was made in 1886 by the serial number. Any one know how accurate that may be? what the gun is worth and how old the scope may be and worth as well. I have not tried to shoot it yet but plan to shortly. It just seems there isn't much information/literature to be found on them> Thanks alot

hello guys i will join your club. and also my 39a was made in 1980 and i was wondering if it will hurt the value if i have it redone thanks thinking about rebluing? it is a 39a golden original microgrooved.

If your rifle is a Model 39 it was made between 1922 and 1938.

If it's a Model 39-A it was made sometime after 1939.
The serial number data base sites can be deceptive depending on when it was made.
We need more info to help ID the year made.

The Lyman 438 scope was made between 1930 and 1947.
Some of these can be worth up $500.

Unless the bluing is in pretty bad shape, a re-blue will affect the value at least some.
If the finish is really worn, a re-blue won't have much effect.
If you do have it refinished having it done by a top service who do high quality polishing will affect it less than the usual butcher job you get when you go cheap.
Good sources of a top quality re-finish are:

http://www.apwcogan.com/

http://www.fordsguns.com/

http://www.gunbluing.com/

http://www.elitecustomguns.com/index1.htm

These days, you can have cheap re-bluing or you can have GOOD re-bluing. You can't have both. You get exactly what you pay for.

Dfaris;

In your opinion, what's a good blue job cost at one of the establishments you've linked to?

If we could extract and organize
the gems of information about the 39 in these 113 pages,
we'd either have a primer or a screenplay for a documentary film.

Hey, maybe both.

Model 39

Its a modle 39, blue is great, stock is carved on the hand and pistol grip. It really looks like a new gun. has the screw up and down peep on the rear as well. Serial # 11764. Not sure what other info i can give you. I sure appreciate your repling to my post :).

Most of the re-finishers have various levels or grades.
The level depends on how fine a grit of polishing is done.
The finer the grit, the shinier the final finish.

A good grade would be a "factory grade" which would be a close match to what the Marlin factory did, probably around 400 grit.

If you want a much more glossy, shiny finish go with a better grade.
Basically, read the info on the web sites and pick whatever level you want, or can afford.
Usually if you tell the service you want a factory level job, they'll know what to do.

Took my 79 39A out a while back to try out the Skinner peeps. Got frustrated because suddenly I was having FTEs like never before. No matter what I used. Federal Automatch, CCI minimags or Stingers same issue.

This rifle is my baby, I even like it more than my 1894c so I was pretty torqued. I had to put the gun away for a few months, work, weather and life got in the way.

Today I took it apart bent the extractor a bit and we're back in business. Free standing with the peep site at 40 yards my little spinner targets were dancing. Still has trouble feeding Stingers for some reason but extracting and ejecting everything I drop the hammer on. The Stingers work well in my 60 so I can live with that. It was a fun afternoon.

Oh yeah, big thumbs up on the Skinner peeps too. :D

Yes, we have to go to other sites to find out mainly, how to solve problems with 39's, since we don't have individual topics addressing issues or concerns for fast reference or search? This is still a very nice forum on the highroad!

Found a used one in a shop the other day and picked it up. Been wanting one of these things for a very long time now and I finally own one :)...after the 10 day waiting period in California that is. My serial number was J239xx I believe. That makes it a '77 correct? It was in fairly good condition but I haven't gotten a chance to shoot it yet. The only noticeable problem I saw was a very small nick in the buttstuck that is hardly noticeable. Otherwise it looks amazing.

WB, the next question is, what'd you pay for it?

And, of course, when you get it, pics are required. ;)

Welcome to the club, and to THR.

Marlin 39 safety replacement?

Sorry if I am hijacking this thread. Please redirect me if I am.

Have a 2009 mfg. Marlin 39. Will the safety replacement made by the talented machinist fit this new mfg? Looks like a pin is used vs the allen head screw.

Maybe, Marlin defeated the traditional way to take out the safety??::banghead:

Thanks for your advice.

Dan

Dfaris;

Yup, know about the various polishing, grits, labor, etc. Been down that road on custom guns. Was just curious as to what the outside world was paying for that type of service vs what I've been used to here in Montana.

Good News

Here's an update on my 39A situation. I had put 200 rounds through a brand new 39A that I got from Gander Moutain (last one they had). I had about 1 in 7 fail to extract. Long story short, I took it back to Gander and they sent it back to Marlin. This weekend I was in Gander and saw that they had another new one. So today I talked to their hunting manager and he let me take the new one home in exchange for the one that will come back from Marlin. I just told him that I didn't pay so much money for a new gun to not get to shoot it (it's been 4 weeks and Marlin probably just got the gun today).

He was a nice guy and I'm excited to get out to the range and try this one out :) I've already got it cleaned and the Skinner sights on it. I'll let you know how it goes on Wednesday.

^ Oh, man, am I ever keeping my fingers crossed that this one is a good one.

If not, we should mount a consumer assault on Marlin about these various ftf and fte issues. :scrutiny:

Hope this isn't veering off-topic (but after 100+ pages I'm not sure what the current topic is, anyway):

I know I'm not exactly lighting the world on fire, but off a sandbag with the standard, semi-buckhorn sights I can keep most shots within a 1" circle at 25 meters. Considering that I'm a casual weekend shooter, how much better should I reasonably expect to get with aperture sights? I know some rifles are more accurate than others, but I'm just going to assume that my rifle falls somewhere in the middle. And I have no interest putting a scope on such a beautiful little rifle, but Skinner sights I could live with if it was "worth it."

In your opinions, what should a "decent" shooter be able to achieve with a newer 39A with both standard sights, or good peep sights? At some point I'd just like to have an idea of where my own limitations are meeting the rifle's.

Thanks in advance.

Culwathion, Good but tough question to answer - paired up with a shooter with a good set of eyes and the right ammo the 39 is a very capable rifle. When I was honchoing the 39 club rifle matches I'd get back some very impressive targets.

1" at 25 meters with open sights is very good, not many shooters manage that especially with the open sights. Good ammo would likely shrink that further. A peep sight would take some of the pilot error out of the equation and likely further shrink the groups or at least reduce fliers. Using the excellent Skinner peeps on my 39, 1895 and 336 Marlins improved my groups and greatly reduced eye fatigue during long range sessions. Like the open sights, it took me a while to adjust to them but once I did I've shot my best ever iron sight groups with them.

Accuracy is relative: I have a CZ 452 American with Leupold glass that with good ammo will put them in one hole at 50 yards off the bench. It is an excellent rifle but I hardly ever shoot it because the ammo it likes is expensive and with the cheap stuff my Marlin 39's do just as well. I also don't like carrying it in the field because not only is it heavier and bulkier, I don't shoot it any better offhand - which is 90% of the shots I take in the field.

Three shots, offhand at typical Grouse hunting range. The Grouse didn't want to play this day so my 39 and I did some plinking.

The 39's I own/have owned pack easy in the field and have an uncanny ability to put Grouse on the menu. They are also wonderful for plinking targets of opportunity and do very well in silhouette competitions (offhand at targets at 40,50, 75 & 100 meters).

Federal Bulk ammo, 50 yards, front rested, Marlin 39 open sites. I don't do this everytime but it ain't the rifle...

Man, I'd be lucky to get 1' at 25 yds with open sights. :D

I've decided to try the Skinners on both my 39 and 336 (as soon as money allows;
starting soon, I'll have more time, but less money, which is bad because I've had "less money" for years already :( But having more time is going to be great. :) ).

But I digress. I like the scope on my 39, but for woods tromping for small game (I'm not a target shooter except for practice and sighting), I'd rather not have that large tube up on top. Just too prone to bumps, and bugs the balance.

Good day at the range

Well, I was able to take my new 39A out to the range tonight. This one did not have a single fail to extract out of 220 rounds. So much better than the first one I had (that was like 1 out of 6). I put the Skinner peep site on and just barely had to adjust the windage some. The height of the sight was perfect (I had adjusted it on my last 39A).

This is my first firearm, but I thought I did pretty well tonight. I shot mostly at 25 yards w/ Remington Thunderbolt (500 pack), Federal Lightning and Winchester Super X ammunition. I sighted in w/ the Remington and it performed the best w/ it. I'll attach my best groups (give me some time and I hope to have some groups like Mo:)).

Anyway, I'm pretty excited that this gun performed very well. It didn't seem to eject the casings with the gusto that the last one did, but only one round didn't come out. I did have 3 fail to fires w/ the Remington ammo, but I'm pretty confident it was the ammo as the strike mark was pretty deep.

After a frustrating start I'm glad I got the Marlin.

Am I reading the serial number chart correctly when I figure my J239xx numbered rifle is made in 1952? If so, will be SOL when it comes to finding new parts if any break?

Culwathion, my early 90's Marlin 39 will do as good as 1.5" at 50 yards with bulk pack ammo like Remington Thunderbolt using a Williams aperture sight.

It might do better if I tried some match ammo, but I have never bought any match ammo before. Maybe someday.
